Former Combined Islands cricketer dies

ROSEAU, Dominica, Apr 28, CMC – Former Combined Islands cricketer and government minister, Kaleb Laurent died at the Princess Margaret General Hospital on Wednesday. He was 65-years-old.

Laurent, who played for the Dominica, the Windward Islands and the Combined Islands in the regional Shell Shield competition, was described by his colleague, Clem John, “as one of the best off spinners never to play Test cricket for the West Indies”.

“He was born in the wrong place at the wrong time,” John said on state-owned Dominica Broadcasting Service (DBS) radio.

Laurent, a former school principal, was also a minister in the government of the late Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles between 1980-85.

His first class cricket career spanned two periods, 1964-65 and 1973-74, during which time he played 16 matches, taking 48 wickets at an average of 26.14 with his right-arm off-breaks. He scored 176 runs.

He was famous for mesmerizing the batsmen from all three remaining Winward Islands, St Lucia, St. Vincent, and Grenada during the yearly Winward tournaments, and also the Leewards and the Greater Antiiles by extension. His spinning reminded me of a windmill turning viciously with the aid of the south, east, north, and west blowing wind. At least, the late Augustus Gregoire, Clem John and Irvine could have counted on him for just another tantalizing spell. Ala Lance Gibbs, according to the great Jeff Charles. I renew my condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences to his family. Knew him personally when I played youth cricket for Dominica. As a minister he actually came to training sessions after work and taught us the art of spin and playing against spin. He was truly a dedicated Dominican cricketer.
