I am deeply concerned about Shanice – Darroux

Darroux (left) and Shanice Jemmot

Parliamentary Representative for the St Joseph constituency Kelver Darroux said he is deeply concerned about the disappearance of 14-year old Shannice Jemmot.

Shanice disappeared last week Thursday and despite repeated efforts to locate her, she is yet to be found.

Darroux said the disappearance of Shanice is affecting several individuals.

He said the entire Dominica Labour Party is praying for her return and is calling on anyone with information to come forward.

“It’s very sad and it’s unfortunate. I have visited the family whom I am very close to and I know what they are going through. The entire community of Layou is saddened by all of that and government is working with police to see Shanice return home,” he said.

Shanice’s uncle James Henry, who lives in St Thomas, is offering a ten thousand dollars reward for any information leading to her safe return.

He said he hopes some form of monetary reward will prompt someone to give information on his missing niece.

I think Mr. Darroux needs to get the Minister of National Security to get the Police officers out of the offices and on the GA’s (driving all around the place transporting all sorts of people and good) and go to the bushes to search. The policy makers also need to look into the 48 hour missing regulations and decrease the time taking into consideration new and emerging crimes.

If a priest said that the entire church is praying for her would you have said anything? It just goes to show how small minded some of us DOMINICANS are. Have you done anything in your power to assist the police or the family? Just sitting at your computer and running your mouth ain’t doing crap.

Hon. Darroux Sir, I am happy that you have spoken on this issue knowing your background as an active youth leader in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Having expressed your concerns I strongly believe that you should seek the support of your Cabinet colleagues to implement a few basic improvements within our School System that can assist the Police whenever a young school child faces such difficulties.

    1. Lets us have all our schools equipped with a digital camera that will allow the schools administration to have an annual photograph of each and every school child along with an updated database that keeps a record of distinguishing marks of the school children, the color of their eyes, the height of the children, their dental records, blood type, next of keen, copy of finger prints, and sample of voice that states their name and surname. This will assist the police in having good quality data to immediately work with to disseminate to all media houses in and out of Dominica as well as the hospital in Dominica and possibly other islands hospitals. The latter can be incorporated into the CSME security initiatives.

    2. As a best practice, Cabinet through the Minister of National Security should encourage the Police High Command to have a template that can be utilized within the shortest possible to make the society aware of a school child missing. That template should be adapted for all media versions – internet, television, radio, newspaper and telephone text messaging.

    3. From the time the police have been informed about a young child missing a National Emergency text message should hit every cell phone holder in Dominica with the description that has already been obtained from the child’s school or State College. We need to have the telecommunications companies in Dominica see this as part of their cooperate social responsibility.

4.We all know of the powerful internet program called Google Earth that allows one to see what is happening all over one’s country from the comfort of their computer. It means that we may not need to rent or pay for satellite services since Google Earth is already integrated with many world satellites.

    5. Cabinet should officially gazette the provision of a tax break to any and all companies that publicly make funds available for the obtaining of credible information that can lead to the finding of any missing young person in Dominica our island’s future.

“He said the entire Dominica Labour Party is praying for her return” why is this political? the whole of Dominica is praying for her safe return, anyone with a sister, daughter, child, cousin, friend is praying for her safe return, red, blue green.

Thanks for finally putting a picture that represents what the young lady looks like. If I had seen this girl I would have passed her straight. The previous picture looked like it was taken when she was 7 yrs old.
On another note, I have seen pictures of both individuals, one says missing, the other says wanted.
Just for the record, both are missing. If the young man is on bail and he has not missed his court date, how could he be wanted???? Is it because he forgot to check in to the Police station every Monday that he is wanted???? Just a question.

  33. Muslim_Always
    February 23, 2011

Since last week Thursday Shanice disappeared, it’s only now that one member has spoken regarding this issue? Is this the speed we respond to criminal activity in this country?

    • Truth, Justice, Love, Peace and Unity
      February 23, 2011

The speed and accuracy is always the Police Department and their search and rescue teams’ responsibility. The government representatives can only offer empathy and hope that Shanice will return home safely. The government must not take it upon itself to bypass the responsibility of the Chief of Police.
Generally, it is always the Chief of Police and his appointed Force who are the ones who plead to the public, in this case, for the safe return of this young child. This is, whatever involves disappearance and crimes, etc. Each one of them has individual assigned duties.

      • Muslim_Always
        February 23, 2011

Tomorrow is a week since the girl disappeared, I mean @ truth, justice…Are you satisfied that it’s only now a member of government comes forward and empathize with the family? No my friend, this is unacceptable, you may choose to run the gimmicks regarding Chief of Police and government. I say too hell with the political tribalism in this country. True leadership involves being at the forefront to condemn criminal activity.

          February 23, 2011

          @ Musllin_Always

I am a fair and just person. We do have to think beyond.
As it has been stated on this Website, the Police Chief and his staff have been been in constant communication with her family and are also conducting their investigation. The family is pleased with their efforts. Please allow them to perform their assigned duties.
You tell me (us) what you expected of the government representative(s) that the Police Department has not done? What can this representative do to bring this lovely child home, safe and sound?
He did state that he personally knows the family. Obviously, he has been in personal contact with them. Does he have to broadcast it to you and everyone else? Utilize your common sense and leave well alone.
I have an advice for Dominicans at home, what those of you could do, you should organize a search team/party, knock on every door and go into every nook, cranny and wilderness of Dominica and search for her. This should have been done the day she went missing and the ensuing days. It may have proved fruitful. Many people specifically overseas do this when children are missing.

        • ashamed dominican right now.
          February 24, 2011

are you speaking from a position of certainty? how do you know ,ttat the other ministers did not visit the family personally? because HON.darroux commented on DNO does not mean that the others are not concerned.please people take a chill pill.

    • Out of touch
      February 23, 2011

They only now came forward because of the comments from the callers on Matt in the morning and readers of DNO. I wish to “BIG UP” Matt for taking this initiative this morning. It is obvious that there are many persons willing to help but with little info from the police and with no request for assistance from the authorities as is done in the US, the people have elected only to prayer. It is high time for serious and heightened action if we are to return this child safely back to her family. Additionally, there are lessons to be learned from this incident – we can’t wait a week in another missing person’s case before we get really serious.

      • Out of touch
        February 23, 2011

I would also like to commend “DNO” as well as they have kept this story on the front burner since the child’s disappearance. DNO please keep up the effort until this child is found. I expect you to be the “Nancy Grace” of Dominica.

        • Truth, Justice, Love, Peace and Unity
          February 23, 2011

I love Nancy Grace’s program – HLN, a sister and/or affiliate channel of CNN. Nancy is a no nonsense woman. You are aware that she is a Lawyer. Some years ago her fiance was murdered. Obviously she took it to heart. She is now a great advocate and defender of the rights of abused woman and children. If I am indoors when her show is broadcasted I always view it. She does a great job.

      • Pomgranate
        February 23, 2011

I am sure you read the part which said he visited the family. Did he tell you when? how did you come up with the conclusion that he is only doing something now. we have to detach politics from these sort of things. the child is missing for a week now. What is important is what can we do as a community and nation to ensure she is found. We need to pray, search and share information with the family and police. Where the polititians come in is to enact legislation that will put in place here something similar to the Amber alert in the united states and if there is anyone who is believed to be holding that child an APB (All points bulleting) be put on on this person and that this be done in a timely fashion too. Stop being petty and beffy.

        • Out of touch
          February 23, 2011

Pomgranate: There is nothing in my comment other than the 1st sentence which refers to a “he” or a “politician”, so you are the one who need to detach the politics. I couldn’t care less if he visited the family. My comment still stands.
