Man dies after falling off cliff

A Bataca man is now dead after reportedly falling off a cliff in the north of the island.

Details are still sketchy but reports are that Robert Mason (deceased) went on an expedition with a friend and accidentally fell of the cliff earlier today.

The friend attempted to help but to no avail.

Mason was later pronounced dead.

As a reader and commentator of DNO blogs, I give the above expression back to you, as I suggest that you “speak for yourself.” Your opinion is yours, not ours.

    @Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque:

I have fallen short of stating that some of the comments presented on DNO are a lot of crap which make no sense whatsoever and are a waste of reading time. I do shake my head about them and laugh at their one-liners.
I am baffled at the response of those critics and wonder are these the only types of people who respond to this Website. These do not appreciate sensible and educated comments to the extent they will grade the comment as “Red – dislike.” I do hope that DON recognizes this. I will inform you that they are disappointing and discouraging.
Telemaque, your last name rings a bell. I have heard and no doubt known “The Telemaques” in either Wesley or Marigot. From what I recall your family is intelligent which makes you intelligent. :)
These days everyone possible has a computer whether they are educated or not. Pay no heed to those critics who appear to be in dire need of education, spelling and writing, common sense and patience. I have been critiqued by them for my long writing.
I always say I do know what I plan to write about. However when I put my fingers to the keyboard, only God knows what I will state, how long the writing will be and as I modify the writing. I do try to keep them short but I am not always successful. It may be that I consider God ordains all to be.
I read your article which is informative and immediately knew by what you stated, you are well-versed. You did something good by informing DON users/readers about it. I am certain that there are those who appreciated the information.
I have thought where are the other educated Dominicans, those who reside in Dominica and elsewhere? Why are they not responding? Does this mean that they are too busy or that they cannot be bothered? I am busy as well but there are times I try to take the time to access DON to read what is occurring in Dominica. I am pleased that I am able to do so. In the past I knew very little of what was occurring in Dominica unless I telephoned home or someone informed me.
Some people of the world, no exception some Dominicans are in dire need of education. They could learn much from you. Keep on responding and do not allow these mischievous critics to deter you. They are doing themselves a disservice.
Keep in mind the world consists of all types of people. As long as we live we will meet them and interact with them. I also view them as being envious people who wish they could be educated and are not even though if they had the opportunity they would have liked to be educated.
People who are always negative do turn me off. That is, without hating them, I detest their attitude. If I know them I could cease interaction with them. However, with the help of God, I have learned to cope with them. I am certain that DON appreciates your writing.
    God bless you!

Freaky things happen, the man could have simply slipped and fell.

@Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque: I have to say that I was quite disturbed after reading your postings. Condescending attitudes are unnecessary and actually repelling to readers. This forum should be civil, a place where those who love Dominica can return to connect with current affairs. Allow someone else to “toot” your horn as it is very unbecoming of one who purports to be of such intelligence. One may have 5 degrees and yet if they are pompous, judgemental and display a lack of tact and respect, then it truly is meaningless.

As others have previously mentioned this accidental death should be fully investigated, not only to clear the friend, but to ensure that this was not a result of a congenital defect or possibly drug related.

    You want English?

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Well, here it is, I doh can laugh at the crap people like you write, I am sure that you are still killing yourself on some person’s job.

My academia caused me to retire at 47 years old, never strike a time clock since then. Yet, I am making more money in one year than you will ever see in a your entire life time.

And that’s unless you go into the illegal drug trade, and you might get yourself killed in the process. Do not worry about me and the English language, you are so dumb, you are reading perfect English, and does not even know it!

I am not a not a linguistic major, but I can make cornmeal ( pap) porridge with you in the darkest hour of the night and you would not know if you are reading English or patios!

DNO, please tolerate this and allow this comment to go through, along with the Following:

Mrs Xavier would like her story known:

Your kind of corporation is appreciated.

    Hello Francisco

I tried to post a comment in agreement with the person who agreed that your information, in regards to the death of the man who fell off the cliff and died; but I got a stupid response after I posted it, and they did not put it on the waiting list.

Your mention about vertigo, and who experienced it, is what I supported in the information because I have experienced vertigo. Yes, you are right! My experience of vertigo happened in my adult years, as hearing loss began to worsen in me.

I was born with a disease of the ear, that should have been looked after when I was a child. Five of my siblings–four sisters and one brother–including my son was born with that disease. One of my sisters, who is now 53 years old, experienced the greater impact of that disease. Hearing impairment at a very early age caused her not to be able to learn to speak, in that she now has a slight speech disability, along with profound hearing impairment. But she learned how to lip-read throughout the years, so we do not have much difficulty speaking to her; as long as she is looking at us.

My son, one of my sisters, and myself, are the lucky ones because we live in Canada. Doctors discovered the disease in my son when he was a baby because of a ear infection. So through surgery they prevented the disease from spreading. But he can only hear through his left ear right now. Doctors told me that they could restore his hearing in his right ear, at any time, through another surgery.

I began to experience the effect of that disease when I was about 30 years old, in that I had some difficulties in hearing well enough, that my ear doctor prescribed hearing aids. But hearing aids did not help my hearing problem, so I continued with the difficulty to hear completely, until I reached 46.

That was the time I began to experience vertigo. At that time many health complications had evolved in my life. I first suffered from depression, which demanded that I go on medication for the illness. Right after that my doctor discovered that I had diabetes; then hypertension, including a nervous system disorder, that sometimes affect my stomach–a mild feeling of nervousness–and painful itch in the palm of my hands and feet, which still bothers me from time to time. But I believe that my vertigo had more to do with my ear disease.

From 1998 to 2005 I gradually suffered complete hearing loss, which prevented me from working. When I was applying for disability assistance, the specialist, who handled my application suggest that I should receive cochlea implant. This process was only completed in July of this year. I now have the complete hearing aid device, when means that I am just learning to hear again.

My sister, who is now living in Canada, used to experience her vertigo when she was in her teenage years in Dominica. But doctors never defined her symptoms; causing my family to accept the advise of palm readers, who took money from my mom, just to tell her all sorts of lies about what was happening to my sister during her vertigo attack. It was only when I began to experience vertigo, myself, that I got to understand what had happened to my sister in the past. Today she uses outside hearing aids, but she is much younger than I am, which leads me to believe that she might need the same surgery and device that I now have, if she lives to be my age.

I just have one question for you. After my surgery for the cochlea implant, I began to experience a form of dizziness again. It mostly happens when I promptly raise my head, sending it too far up and too far back; and when I lie down. As I said already, they did the surgery for me in July, and I am now wearing the complete device.

I mentioned the dizziness to my audiologist earlier on, because it was more severe than right now; she told me that it was normal. She also told me that I should let her know if it continued, but I haven’t done so, because I do not want to go through another surgery again. What do you think I should do?

I am sorry that I was not able to support your information for the DNO article, to the readers and commentators. But I hope that you will not allow the negative responses to prevent you from the information you have, to pass on to the rest of us. Remember that there are many people who wants to learn as much as possible. I am one of those people. Stupid people will always continue to make a fool of themselves, as they do not know that people with intelligence are shaking their heads against them. If you can send this pargraph to DNO, you have my permission.

Thank you for the information that you post in regards to health situations. And if you reply, please send your response to [email protected] It is my regular email address, and is easier for me to access.

    Sincerely
    Elizabeth L. Xavier

    @Lizavier4Jesus:

This has occurred a few times in Dominica in the past. One such case a couple were on their honeymoon and climbed up either a hill or the mountain. They were taking pictures. One of them fell to their death. This occurred years ago. It also happens in other countries. Accidents happen and will always happen and when we least expect it. We hope that the fall and death was a natural one. Some people are adventurous and do not give a thought to the inevitable occurring. We must be careful.
If I recall Rodney’s Rock is another area. I have visited DA a few times but not been there since I resided in Dominica. I also recall going there on an educational outing with the teacher and class when I was at school.

    @Anti-hate:

Anti-hate, I am still alive, well, and kicking, I read DNO every day, that prevents me from calling someone in Dominica everyday, and ask what happened today?

However, I only respond to certain articles to which I believe my contribution will shed a little light, and benefit at lease one person with an open mind. Nonetheless, sometimes I get the feeling, that I am casting pearls in the face of Swine’s.

Mind you I did not call anybody in Dominica Swine, so please people don’t shoot me because of that.

    Hahahahahahahahahahah!

I.E. someone is focused on ” what I should say regarding the fall.”

How can someone dictate to another person what they say or how they should conduct themselves?

There was a time in Dominica, when there were some pious, and pompoms half illiterate people who thought they were God gift to society, and that they were God appointed spoke person for the rest of the village, well those days are long over, the bourgeoisie days are long gone, and even in the days of the bourgeoisies, when I was a kid, Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque refused to be contained, and could not be contained.

And to those who do not believe me all they have to do is go into the village of Wesley, and ask anybody over sixty years old if they know, or ever heard of a little boy called ” Son fu Ma John ” and see what the say!

That person keep saying I am giving definitions; to me that is as far as that person comprehension goes, however, I am in fact talking medicine, real medicine, I am explaining medical science, which one cannot pick up in the streets, that came directly out of my learning, my academics , but as everything else; and as the saying goes:

” a prophet, is without honor in his own country.”

Someone even went as far as contending that I am playing smart. Well, my answer to that is ” I am not playing smart, because I know without a doubt, I am very smart!

    How do I know that?

Well, any man woman, girl, or boy, who has the ability to successfully obtained a three scientific degrees in the field of electrical and electronic engineering, along with a junior degree in the liberal arts, to my mind has to be smatter than the average person, and in addition to that; also majored in Health Science, and showed proficiency, in the time that person took health science, is a testament of his or her ability, and therefore does not require anyone to lament how smart the person.

I have to know that for myself, and with all confidence, I can say I am smart!

Some people attended classes for many years, and failed to secure a single degree of any kind, and whereas I was succfull, I have the right and privilage to consider me a smart person.

That is my background, I am an electronic/electrical engineer, turn medical student until I dropped out, however, I learn enough to a certain extent, which allows me to express myself in the way that I do. I am not shallow, and I refuse to present myself as a shallow person.

Believe it or not, there lots of none-Dominicans reading DNO, and I assure you after some of these people read the sort of trash that some people submit here, you would not like to hear the comments some of these people make.

Like me, hate me, it matters not, I however, detest people trying to dictate to me how I should conduct myself, if I allow that to happen, then I would have become like them.

I hope you are fine Anti-Hate, and having a nice day!

    Respectfully,

    Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

Life is an ongoing growing and learning process. We are all teachers, some for good and some for bad. We do learn from each other, one way or the other. Personally I like to learn the better things and which are informative and educating.
This is an excellent article, well written and well taken. Those who criticize it are in need of education and/or further education. They should comprehend the reason why you took the time to write it and free of charge. It should be appreciated.
It is a mystery what occurred to the man which caused him to fall off the cliff. It could very well have been dizziness. Standing on a cliff could cause this. Had he eaten that day prior to going on this expedition?
The autopsy will reveal if he had any form of seizure. If a medical cause of death is not revealed, this is where suspicion will be directed at the one who was present with him at the time of this incident.
It will also be wise that the investigators ascertain if the departed was on good terms with the other man. A thorough investigation should be conducted. No stones should be left unturned.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

Coincident, or does this man family has a history of some hereditary disease, reading this contribution has given cause to believe that it is not a matter of coincident, but it might be they all may perhaps have one of the conditions I mentioned in my little submission.

Trouble is that in Dominica, these days we no longer blame it on the obeah man, we become suspicious of the messenger reporting to the police.

    @Mentally Disturbed:

But Mentally Disturbed, you crazy garcon:

    Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

It’s the same thing I try to explain, when people are unable to think cognitively, their comprehension is usually limited.

Here you read where people are expressing some form of suspicion that the man who fell of the cliff may have been pushed, or murdered, though they had not said it outright, and in so many words.

Based on their suspicions, I simply ask that we reserve our judgment until an autopsy is performed on the dead man, and a finding, ( the cause of his death is discovered).

In my submission, I simply explained medical conditions he could be suffering from, and venturing at certain elevation could have stimulated (caused an acute onset), in a way that he became disoriented, which caused him to fall to his death!

Even an idiot should be able to understand that.

What about something as simple as that you do not understand?

It would appear to me that your cognition is warped, read it again perhaps this time you will find the commonsense in what I conveyed, since all that I wrote has everything to do with the accident. I have not drifted from the subject of discussion.

Nonetheless I question your comprehension of the English language!

  39. Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
    October 26, 2010

We are forgetting one thing here, and that is most of us walk about drunken on any given day in Dominica.

Then again some of us have serious medical conditions, which can cause us to become disoriented under certain circumstances.

If we are hearing that he fell off a cliff, that is an indication he may be at an high elevation, that could have triggered a medical disorder commonly term ” vertigo.”

That is a disordered state in which the individual, or the individual’s surroundings seem to whirl dizzily.

Now I am not making claims as to what I believe caused this man to fall to his death, however we should not be too quick to jump to a conclusion, as to the cause of his fall. We must always remember that anyone reporting a murder, or any committed crime, or accident, usually becomes the primary suspect in the matter.

I am certain that the man reporting the incident to the police is cloaked in suspicions by the police, but until then we need to reserve our opinions.

And because I am aware that there is always someone who reads my comments on DNO, and is always quick to critique me without any knowledge or understanding of what I am talking about, I would like to expand a bit on the medical problem involving dizziness, and vertigo.

A common symptom, dizziness is a sensation of imbalance or faintness, sometimes associated with giddiness, weakness, confusion, and blurred or double vision.

Episodes of dizziness are usually brief; they may be mild or severe with abrupt or gradual onset.

Dizziness may be aggravated by standing up quickly, and alleviated by lying down and by rest.

Dizziness typically results from inadequate blood flow, and oxygen supply to the cerebrum and spinal cord. It may occur with anxiety, respiratory, and cardiovascular disorders, and postconcussion syndrome. It’s a key symptom in certain serious disorders, such as hypertension and vertebrobasilar artery insufficiency.

Though dizziness is commonly confused with vertigo, a sensation of revolving in space or of surroundings revolving about onset.

However, unlike dizziness, vertigo is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, nystagmus, staggering gait, tinnitus, or hearing loss.

Dizziness, and vertigo may occur simultaneously, as in postconcussion syndrome.

It would be better to reserve judgment until the result of an autopsy is known, because the departed, could be suffering from any of the following, which could have caused his death, riding on a buss, swimming in the ocean, or simply sitting in conversation with someone:

    Anemia

    Cardiac arrhythmias

    Carotid sinus hypersensitivity

    Emphysema

    Generalized anxiety disorder

    Hypertension

    Hyperventilation syndrome

    Hypoglycemia

    Hypovolemia

    Orthostatic hypotension

    Panic disorder

    Postconcussion syndrome.

And finally Transient ischemic attack (TIA).

If after an autopsy is performed and it is found that he suffered from none of all mentioned above and he was not under the influence of some substance, including alcohol, then the police should become suspicious of the person who made the report, unless it can be proved otherwise that he fell accidently.

And to my critics, such information, you will not find in the library, and I doubt you will find it accuratly stated as I have done on the internet.

And before I have to go off on you again, I advise that you read Signs & Symptoms; by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Let me assure you unless you got to a point where you were about to practice medicine, or have attend some medical institution, I know you cant get your hands on a book like I referenced.

If you read and understand, fine, if you do not understand fine.

If something catches your attention, and you would like me to further explain it to you feel free to contact me via [email protected] or [email protected] on http://www.yvonnedods.com

With the most part of Dominica being rugged, hilly, or mountainous, how is it that an adult person from Dominica is so naive about wandering the surface, that he even falls off a cliff to his death?

That is an awful mishap, but the detail is sketchy for sure. I hope that the situation will be well investigated. That friend must be put through a thorough series of questions, to make sure the truth is clear and intact.

It iis difficult to believe that a person can just walk off a cliff to his death, in a place where he should be well aware of its ruggedness from the day he came to know himself. Let us hope that this is not what we are going to have to accept. This story is really, really sketchy.

I do not want to blame anybody, because you are innocent until proven guilty. but I think too many time the authority accepts these stories, “we were together and this or that happens” POLICE PLEASE DO YOUR JOBS INVESTIGATE, stop this cycle, of accidental deaths

I hope they investigate the friend. The last time a little boy went swimming with some friends, he never returned.
