UPDATE: Man seriously hurt in accident at Picard

The truck was completely burnt

Anthony Ricketts of Roseau is presently a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) as a result of motor vehicular collision which occurred in the vicinity of Coconut Beach at Picard.

According to Police PRO Acting Inspector Jno Baptiste about 11:20PM of Sunday, 8th January 2017, on the Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway, motorcycle registration number PP747 which was being ridden by Ricketts collided with motor vehicle registration number SA040 which was being driven by Sherman Harve of Fortune.

Ricketts was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the PMH where he received medical attention and was admitted.

Jno Baptiste said both motor vehicles ignited into flames on the scene of the collision.

Investigations are ongoing.

Reports indicate the man lost both legs.

I did not see the bike but we need to get lots of these bikes off the roads most of them have no insurance and are not even safe to be on the street I saw a few of them all they have for headlight is a bulb hanging at
the front no tail light and overtake on any side most of these riders I doubt have a license the police should
have a task force just to handle these crap they ride on the road I was a bike rider in Dominica for years and
went through all kind of safety test before I put my bike on the road now it free for all no police checking

Motor bike riders needs better protective riding gear. Helmets , riding boots, strong protective jackets, in the absence of these there will always be someone being fatally wounded in any possible accident. A law must be enforced, any one seen riding without proper gear should be charged and the motor bike seized until they can prove that the are in possession of proper riding gear. From whomever theses motor bikes are being purchased proper protective riding gear should be sold with it as well. Too many young men are losing their lives because of irresponsibility….. be smart save a life use proper riding gear for a better ride. ..

What gear can do for you when you collide with a truck ? Motorcycle riding is just a risky business period.

    • Nickki
      January 11, 2017

yes rider need to use proper riding gears, but did you not see the injuries that the rider sustained riding gear could not have prevented that with the speed he had ,

  6. The Truth Be Told
    January 10, 2017

This was a bad accident. The vehicle looks like it is a complete write-off.
At that time of night some drivers think there will be no other vehicles on the road. Nevertheless, no matter what time it is, you are obligated to obey road regulations. You must stick to your side of the road. You cannot afford to take chances for you never know when a vehicle will be coming and smash into yours.
Take precaution. Drive safely. Slow and steady wins the race that you may arrive in one piece; not in pieces.
I hope the injured recovers. Obviously it is also a concern for his family. We all can pray for him wherever we reside.
Lord, please ease his pain and may he be healed in time.

He had protective gear on. No amount of regular gear could save his legs. Stop just blabbering your mouth

Sad but what happened to the driver of the truck

    • January 11, 2017

I am very sorry about the guy whose pictures are circulating on whatsapp. And what kind of onesided reportage is that? It look like the father of the guy driving the truck is not in government or do not have a big job therefore he is insignificant. He is not even mentioned. The truck must have been driving itself.

This tragic accident has only affected a few of the riders , and its only for a while they will be back on the streets doing the same thing the took one of their friends life , all this is life lesson that we just keep on ignoring and the sad truth is we only learn when it happens to us ,God is the only reason why that young man didn’t die that night .

What nonsense about enemy intended for evil. These guys are being reckless racing at high speeds on public access roads in a country with mediocre emergency response and medical facilities. They’re basically asking for their own deaths. He’s lucky he only escaped with losing his legs. One of them wasn’t so lucky a few years ago and they still haven’t learned.

I am sorry that bad things continue to happen on the Island. I pray strength from God for the family of this young man and also for the other dead victims. Family member, tell this young man that he may have lost both legs but he still has life! Now is the time to reflect and pray! Give God his life! This was another chance that he may have been given. He may still walk with prosthetic legs. Life is what matters. Make it right!
Dominica! As it was in the days of Noah so shall it be for the coming of Jesus Christ! Is God too loving to send us to Hell?
He doesn’t. We chose our path! We literally have to step over him to go into Hell because he has made all provision for mankind. He warns humanity every time but humanity does not listen. He did in the days of Adam, Noah, lot, Moses….. People.
Shall we continue to sin that Grace may abound? We have free will! we are living spirits! This is amazing! we are also promised life eternal if we walk in his ways!
    May God’s name be…

I am from Dominica but I live in the u.s I ride street bikes also. I have seen pro riders died.. motorcycles is fun but also very dangerous. My fellow riders although accidents do happen sometimes your wrong or right. U need to excersise caution.. lately I have seen the increase of fuel injected bike being popular and imported in Dominica. Guys these bikes don’t play. Speed and power.. most riding with no gear… it ridiculous… hope the rider pulls through.. best wishes to him and his family

So sad, Gods healing hands upon him. To the other riders leave those BIKES alone, bikes are dangerous and we see every year what is happening to riders.

    • hmmm
      January 11, 2017

Honestly, everything is dangerous… there’s no guaranteed safety. Like all else,it’s about caution and precaution.

why should a bike rider leave the bike alone? that makes no sense. does anyone say car driver, van driver etc leave the car, van alone?

Its a mode of transportation and like all else it has to be handled with care and the precautions and rules need to be followed.

we need to stop with this stupid mentality that bike riding is wrong. There is no pace for thoughts liek this.

Accidents do happen – that’s why they are called accidents. It’s like having insurance… you dont want stuff to happen but just in case.

no one rides a bike hoping to get into an accident or end up injured… happens.

      advise precautionary measures instead.

Street racing has been an increasing problem on this stretch of road. Speed bumps need to be installed to discourage this behaviour and to protect walkers, bikers and automobiles.

  24. January 9, 2017

“The chariots (vehicles, riders) shall rage (make a show, boast, be clamorously foolish, stultify) in the streets, they shall justle (course (like a beast of prey), seek greedily) one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches (flambeau, lamps or flames), they shall run (rush) like the lightnings,” Nahum 2:4.

This is extremely sad and unfortunate..I want to encourage his family to remain strong in what I believe are trying times. Cases like this are examples of issues pertaining to the needs of our youth which are not being properly addressed. We a raised to work hard at gaining proper education; find a good job; and them what?? That’s my concern, where are the proper avenues for young people of various interest to recreate.

Clearly this guy loved Motor sports and being young is synonymous to taking risks; a dangerous concoction in my mind! However, the odds of this happening in a controlled setting (race track or a closed road) would be much lower, or to some extent sufficiently rare. Based on this premise I doubt that there is anything else we can do no matter how much we educate motorist about the impact of speeding, road safety, placing speed bumps or stiffer penalties. I am convinced that the theory of acceptable risk will prevail and often ensue in devastating outcomes
