Information reaching Dominica News Online indicates an employee of Marpin has been seriously injured in an accident in Les Point near Mahaut.

It is reported that the man was doing some work on a pole when it broke and fell with him. This resulted in serious injury to his head, although at the time of the incident he was wearing protective headgear.

DNO understands the man has been identified as Reynold Baron.

Motorists and other bystanders rushed to Baron ‘s aid and lifted the pole off his body. After 30 minutes no ambulance had arrived on the scene. A Youth Development pick up truck eventually arrived and took him to the hospital.

While waiting for emergency vehicles a nurse on the scene assisted in some way and a doctor later arrived and did basic first aid.

The incident brought traffic to a stand still.

One thing I would really like to say is the fact before acquiring more laptop memory, consider the machine in to which it could well be installed. In case the machine is running Windows XP, for instance, the actual memory threshold is 3.25GB. Setting up greater than this would easily constitute some sort of waste. Make sure that cheap vps one’s motherboard can handle this upgrade volume, as well. Thanks for your blog post.

plzzzzz build things that matter to us most..it’s better to have more ambulances and no one to drive them than dont have at all to respond to emergences..

The entire health system is a joke..too much money spending on things that don’t matter to us like state house. stop buying one or two ambulances every four yrs and build a good health system. better hospitals, more ambulances, trained nurses, more doctors..we suffer too much just to see a doc at the pmh..what do we have to do again so that the powers that be fix the system..plzzzz hear our cry and stop stealing the country money money..

ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE ON THE SCENE AND ALOT OF THE INFORMATION AT THE TOP IS NOT TRUE. THE NURSE AT THE SCENE ONLY KEPT SAYING DO NOT TOUCH THE MAN AND WAS ON HER PHONE TEXTING FOR THE ENTIRE TIME. AT ONE POINT SOMEONE ASKED HER TO DO SOMETHING AND SHE SAID SHE DID NOT HAVE GLOVES. THE FIREMAN GOT GLOVES THE DOCTOR HAD DOUBLE GLOVE WHEN HE HELPED TO PUT THE MAN ON THE VAN, by the way, THAT IS ALL THE DOCTOR DID. THE ONLY PERSON TO PHYSICALLY ASSIST THE GENTLEMAN WAS A FIREMAN, LAWRENCE, FROM THE PORTSMOUTH FIRE STATION WHO WAS PASSING BY ON HIS SCOOTER. AFTER SEEING THE MAN ALMOST STIFLING WITH HIS BLOOD IN HIS NOSE AND THROAT, TOOK A GLOVE AND TILTED HIS HEAD SO THE BLOOD CAN FLOW DOWN. ALSO A GENTLEMAN HAD A CARD BOARD PREVENTING THE SUN FROM COOKING THE MAN’S FACE. I KEPT SAYING TAKE THE MAN UP, BUT THE NURSE KEPT SAYING DO NOT TOUCH HIM. I TOLD HER WHEN THE AMBULANCE GETS HERE, IT WILL BE CARRYING A NURSE AND FIREMAN A DOCTOR, WE HAVE ALL THREE PRESENT ON SITE WHY NOT DO SOMETHING. A BUS DRIVER BROUGHT AND UMBRELLA AND I ROLLED UP THE CARDBOARD, BY ORDER OF THE FIREMAN, TO PUT UNDER THE MAN’S NECK WHICH WAS BEING HELD UP BY THE SAID FIREMAN FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES. A CAR DRIVER SAID PUT THE MAN IN MY CAR. BUS DRIVERS KEPT SAYING PUT THE MAN ON MY BUS LET ME TAKE HIM TO THE HOSPITAL, BUT NO. THE NURSE KEPT SAYING DO NOT TOUCH HIM. I JUST KEPT STOOPING DOWN AND TELLING THE MAN TO KEEP BREATHING. NOT SURE IF HE WAS HEARING ME BUT I KEPT SAYING IT.
AFTER ABOUT 45 MINUTES THE SAME MAN WAS TOUCHED AND PUT AT THE BACK OF A HOT VAN BY THE SAME DOCTOR AND THE SAME ON-LOOKERS AND THE SAME FIREMAN. THE FIREMAN LEFT HIS SCOOTER AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WENT WITH THEM TO THE HOSPITAL. AFTER 45 MINUTES, IF THE AMBULANCE WAS SOMEWHERE CLOSE I WOULD HAVE AT LEAST HEARD THE SIREN, BUT NOT EVEN THAT I HEARD. NURSES AND DOCTORS ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK ONLY IN THE HOSPITAL IT SEEMS. THE THREE TOGETHER COULD HAVE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO LIFT THE GENTLEMAN AND PUT HIM ON A VEHICLE LONG BEFORE THE 45 MINUTE PERIOD SO HE COULD GET EARLIER MEDICAL ASSISTANCE.
I PRAY FOR THIS MAN THAT GOD WILL GIVE HIM A SECOND CHANCE OF LIFE. HE IS A STRONG MAN TO ENDURE SUCH PAIN AND STILL BE HANGING IN THERE.
MAY GOD GIVE THE MARPIN STAFF COURAGE TO GO THRU THAT WITH THE MAN’S FAMILY.

      @ on-the-scene:

You are right that early medical treatment can be the difference between life and death. But the nurse was right. Moving the accident victim can have serious medical and legal implications. Why rush him to the hospital in a car or bus without a gurney to stabilize his spinal column? He can/could be paralyzed by doing so. If he was paralyzed as a result of the fall, Marpin, their insurance and lawyers could argue that those who moved him were responsible for additional injuries to his spinal cord.

We have to be calm and thoughtful in such situations. The fire man was of great help rendering first aid. Your help was also appreciated but please do not beat up on the nurse. She could rush to attempt to save a life while potentially losing hers in the process by contracting blood-borne illnesses without gloves. Kudos to those who will but do not blame those who won’t.

      September 18, 2011

yes tehre is a response time for ambulance in dominica, but when you working with one ambulance that at the time of the incident may be out on another call, them whats the end result? people are left stranded, stop pionting fingers at the firemen, while this goverment is fully outfitting the police police force the fire service gets the scraps that remain. when you out side is one thing but when you in is another story totally

It was nice of the persons driving by to help this man but we can have a serious problem there. We talking spinal injury and the effects of lifting a victim whithout special care. Hearts off to those who assisted- we need first aid courses.
It should be made a law that all have to pass a first aid course inorder to get drivers licence. That would only be to our advantage!!

My problem is not just the obvious delay- I know there could be several reasons why the ambulance did not show up.
My other major concern is the possible back, and other serious injury that may have happened to that individual and no one was on the scene to properly handle him so that they do not cause more harm. It seems that is a prevalent problem in scenes like this in Dominica.
My other concern is that most drivers in Dominica do not respect the emergency vehicles and clear the way or stop so that they can get to the scene quickly. In those serious injury a minute delay can be the difference between life and death.
Lastly, there is insufficient ambulance and trained first responders.
Hope the young man have a full and quick recovery.

how many incidents occur at a regular basis which require Ambulance services? D/ca has at least 6+ ambulances i’m sure- wtf there were 6+ emergency situations going on at the time? These guys using gov’t vechiles to run their personal sin. There is NO excuse for the ambulance not showing up- and ur point on drivers not respecting emergency vehicles is baseless also. If they wanted all they had to do was to put on their siren and they would have been in mahaut from PMH in under 5mins- the reckless way they drive when they on their personal sin.

Although we can’t avoid situations such as those , but in reference to the ambulance service this is insane. Thank God he was able to get other means of transportation to do the job. The Government need to do something about that, this is serious. Too many times we have cases whereby, the ambulance is way too late or there are no vehicles on the compound. And still they don’t LEARN from these mistakes it continues to happen.

We have been making so much progress under Skeritt according to you guys and yet, over 30 minuites and you cannot get an ambulance to come and rescue an injured worker. Mahault to Roseau is no more than a 10 minuite drive and you all are so blind to reality and as a result, cannot demand improvement. It is amazing to see how we as Dominicans speak so foolishly, Many I ask one or two questions? how many of the persons who responded to the article was actually there? who was the one who called the ambulance service, was a timer on to count to say that it was exactly 30mins? was does everything have to be politics can’t we think outside of the politics box like we once did? What is the sue money going to do for this poor fellow who left home this morning with plans for the future and chances are he may never walk again, have you sat to think of that? and to have his picture out like that how des his wife, mother or children feel? why are we so heartless? where has love gone?
Please take a time to read some of what you post it is a true reflection of you and looking from outside it’s ugly.
God bless my nation and it’s people and heal this young man and his family.

Well said truth. It is good to know some of us can be objective.

Also did Angelo Allen abuuse his journalistic prividelges by his life commentary, including the man’s name – not even sparing a thought of the family who may not have been informed? The effect may be as bad, or worst than shooting a man in a school yard by a professional.

The majority of persons are questioning the amount of time it took the ambulance arrive at Les Pointe. The ambulance might have been on another call. Thats what happens when persons call for the ambulance for petty calls where as the ambulance could be reserve for real emergencies such as this one. Dominican must use the ambulance service wisely from now on.

Since most of our utility poles are alongside the roadway, why don’t we have bucket trucks to work on the poles. It’s about time that the utility companies invest in a few bucket trucks. Was there another company employee? Any employee working on a pole or in a manhole should have a second employee for assistance in case of emergency. Many poles also have high voltage cables. • September 17, 2011

Its a doggone shame to repeat that that is how things work in this day and age. Why can’t Canefield serve as a sub station with enough personnel and equipment in case of emergencies in the nearby area? Let us not forget that the bulk petrol store facilities are located in the Canefield area. Why can’t a vehicle with a couple officers remain at base while others attend to only accident related emergencies? By the way, which station services the Marigot area, where the other airport is located?

Our companies in dominica just want to know they have a yearly profit of millions. I pray that the Lord Bless this young man and his family.Don’t worry to much God have his plan for this man it may not be here on earth but he have his plan for all of us.

I am guessing you are a very well paid employee who is willing to defend your company. Dominica is one of the few countries which has no kind of legislation to protect employees (If there is it is definitely not being enforced). They allow employers to do anything to employees from abuse to victimization. In order to cut cost, Marpin has now changed from teams to individuals. Even if Marpin says inspect the pole properly, who is to tell whether that was done or not? Well, at least if there was another team member, things may have been different. I would advise you to take your genuine concerns to your employer instead of kissing up and defending them while your colleague’s life hangs in the balance!

some people have no common knowledge of what is happening. If dere is an emergency like this 1 and everybody head is so far up their — and not realizing the first thing to do is called the Fire service help will never reach. Its no way that the Fire service would receive an information like this and not respond promptly. people be wise and stop trying to give the department a bad name.

So wait a minute, only one ambulance serving the whole nation?unbelievable shame shame shame on the government, this is outrageous 30 minutes for a critically injured man to lay on the ground waiting on emergency vehicle to come to his aid is totally unacceptable, for heaven sake invest in a helicopter or something, what are the people paying taxes for?these are the things that enrage me,I pray that the young man survives and I also agree that people employed to do those dangerous jobs should be provided with “hard hats” and othor protective gear

Didn’t you see a photo and video on NBC this week of a man who was puuled out from underneath a burning car? It’s called news. I am sure you have seen similar and others which did not draw such comment from out of you

Question; Isn’t there a branch of the Fire and Ambulance Services located in Canefield? How long does it take an ambulance from Canefield to Les Pointe? When people particularly politicians sit and discuss ideas, this one should be on the top of the list. After 30 minutes, even if an ambulance leaves Roseau it would have gotten to Les Pointes!! Who holds these people responsible for not performing their duties? It is already bad enough that they are only transporting the patient with no qualified health official who could deliver emergency care but it is worse that they cannot even provide a ride in adequate time.

I would advise Marpin to ask the Fire and Ambulance services to bear part of the costs involved in the treatment of this patient. I wish him well and I do wish him a speedy recovery.

    • Sum Fing Not Wong
      September 16, 2011

There is a technique used by utility companies to inspect the base of poles before climbing them. I have seen Domlec and Lime pole climbers doing this. I believe that pole climbers should always place their ladders in the same direction of the “stays”. This will ensure some security if the pole gives in. But even better than this, we should consider moving away from climbing poles and using ladders. The trucks with the hydraulic lifts give more security.

I can understand your concern but the section of road where the team was working is now undergoing major road works as part of the West Coast road rehabilitation programme and this fact prevented the team from confirming the integrity of the pole before climbing it. The fact that the pole had two “stays” anchoring it must have given the team the assurance that it would hold. They were actually transferring cable from the current pole to a new pole.

I wish him well this is terrible news, but what is the man’s employer doing? What safety measures are in place for employees. I understand that it is company policy to have only one man out at a time despite suggestions to include at least two for safety and efficiency. I hope something is done and the right questions asked. We need to stop waiting for an accident to happen and put pressure on companies to have proper PREVENTATIVE measures in place. Please let’s stop being only reactive, after all nice words and sentiments won’t undo the damage that has already been done.

We are often quick to put down our own, so it is good that we acknowledge the expertise of our own while recognizing that we live in a Third World economy with limited resources.
