BRADES, Montserrat (GIU) — Quick thinking by the pilot of a FlyMontserrat aircraft diverted a major incident on Sunday afternoon at the John A. Osborne Airport on Montserrat.
Hundreds gathered to view the sight of one of the airline’s three Islanders off the runway and turned into the mountain ridge after the aircraft developed brake trouble upon landing. Quick work by pilot Paula Girling in stopping the plane averted injuries to the seven passengers aboard.
Airport Manager Denzil Jones closed the airport for several hours while they secured the aircraft and the runway. The section of runaway near the aircraft was cordoned off, which reduced the length of the available landing space.
Fly Montserrat and SVG Air both resumed flights around 5:00 pm but with a reduced payload of three passengers.
A crane was used to move the aircraft late Sunday evening and engineers are presently looking at the aircraft to ascertain the extent of the damage.
