UPDATED: One man dead following construction accident in Dos Dane

Police have confirmed the death of Ovin Joseph of Dos Dane who died after a concrete wall collapsed on him at a construction site.

Police Public Relations Officer Claude Weekes said Joseph was involved in demolishing a kitchen, which was attached to a concrete bungalow house at the time of the incident, between 9:30 a.m. and 10:05 a.m.

Consequently, a concrete wall fell on him, smashing his body parts, according to Weekes.

Joseph was pronounced dead by Dr. Dechausay of the Reginald F. Armour Hospital in Portsmouth.

A coroners’ inquest and a post-mortem will be conducted into the man’s death.

I see so many people posting comments about safety and that the guy wasn’t wearing a hard hat and stuff…..There is a hosing and plannin ministry for the purpose of securing and ensuring that the building that are being set up are indeed safe enough for people to leave in. Understandably this may have been the reason why the wall was being taken down in the first place, but knowing the dangers or such an .. structure, there should have been more precaution taken, in that, machines should have been used to bring down that wall, hence elliminating the obvious threat to man power. It is too unfortunate that this young man had to pass in such a horrific manner. We need to be more cautious.

I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased. Although this is a very difficult time for the family memories of happy times spent together often helps to lessen the pain. Knowing that he is safely in the arms of the almighty, free from pain or suffering, is also comforting.

That being said, more resources must be committed to protecting workers and saving lives. We no longer build little wooden houses…….. high rise luxury buildings are being constructed with two, three and four floors requiring more intense and difficult manpower……… we need more up-to-date equipments to handle some of the more complexed construction projects. However, dismantling, climbing, or poring concrete, for example, are very dangerous jobs, but necessary for the continued development of our lovely nature island.

Let us work towards improving the safety of our construction workers so that this man’s death will not be in vain. We enjoy the luxury of our beautiful homes and commercial buildings; therefore, let us protect the brave men and women who risk their lies to make us comfortable while improving the landscape of our respective villages. Educating workers while protecting them will certainly help to prevent accidents.

    ST MAARTEN

HE WOULD ALWAYS CALL ME AND ASK THE BEST PRICE OF A TICKET FROM DOMINICA TO
ST MAARTEN. AND WHEN ME AND MY BOYFRIEND WAS HAVING PROBLEMS, HE WOULD TALK TO US AND WE WOULD MAKE UP. HE WAS A GOD SENT.
WHEN HE WASN`T WORKING, HE WOULD COME AT MY HOME AND SPEND HOURS WATCHING
AFRICAN MOVIES AND PLAYING CRICKET IN THE YARD WITH MY BOYFRIEND AND MY CHILDREN.
HE WOULD TALK TO ME ABOUT MARRIAGE, HOW HE LOVED HIS BEAUTIFUL WIFE AND CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY HIS DAUGHTERS.

SLEEP ON NOW, AND TAKE YOUR REST:IT IS ENOUGH, THE HOUR IS COME: I AM:AND YE
SHALL SEE THE SON OF MAN SITTING ON THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, AND COMING IN
THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN. MARK. 14:41-62

Hey it is amazing how a man can be blown away like a paper in the wind.Very sad news.We spent very long hours together playing draft, less than twenty four hours before his death. God is in control > To the family,God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we can ever ask or imagine. He will continue to supply all your needs according to his riches in glory. To those of us that are still alive, let us use Irvin as an example. We are there today, then gone in less than no time.Maximize the purpose for which you were created.RIP Irvin
