IN PICTURES: Rain causes havoc on Christmas Eve

Section of the Castle Comfort main road
Section of the Castle Comfort main road

It was supposed to be the biggest shopping day of the year in anticipation of the biggest day of the year.

But torrential rains on the morning of Christmas Eve turned the stretch of road from Castle Comfort to Roseau into a nightmare of mud, dirty water, snarled traffic, nervous pedestrians and flooded homes.

A sleepy ravine, La Riviere Canawie, in Castle Comfort, was turned into an angry wall of water which tossed a forty-foot container around like a toy.

Water and mud from the ravine also flooded the Evergreen and Anchorage hotels.

In Fortune, the raging waters refused to take is normal path, following the Fortune Road instead, flooding several homes with water, mud and debris lower down in Citronier.

Heavy equipment soon appeared on the scene but the damage was done and the southern part of the island was already cut off.

Meanwhile, pedestrians abandoned public transportation, en masse, and some cases, even private vehicle owners parked their vehicles and opted to walk to Roseau instead.

St. Lucia and St. Vincent suffered a similar fate as a result of the bad weather experienced through out the Eastern Caribbean, in particular the Windward Islands. Dr. Ralph Gonzales, Prime Minister of St. Vincent who was out of state at the time, cut short his trip and returned to St. Vincent. Dr. Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of St. Lucia, unlike Skeritt, was in St. Lucia at the time, addressed the St. Lucians on Wednesday as regards the disaster. Skeritt claims he and his Government l o v e s Dominicans in particular the elderly, I understood he is missing in action. What a beautiful way to show interest in the elderly, the young people and the whole of Dominica. By the way, Mr. Jashua Francis of the UWP, the future PalRep of Roseau South who was out of Dominica at the time of the disaster, called the radio station to express his concern.

Why be so hard on the PM? Toronto and some parts of Ontario had a power outage, now for a week for some people, due to snow and an ice storm. I thought, I have yet to hear the Federal PM speak including my MP and MPP or anyone of them in different constituents. The Canadian Parliament and Legislature have closed for the Christmas holidays.
I only heard the Mayor, his deputy and an authority of Hydro Ontario speak and give updates on Radio (since there was no power; in some areas, still not) including the Premier of Ontario.
To this day I have not yet heard anyone complain and blame these others who they expected to speak on air. While these authorities are away, their deputy temporarily substitute for them.

I am wondering what it takes to publish a comment when there are no curse words, no insults, no politics. I could go on and on. I have read several posts on this site and they derogatory to the writers, yet when some posts are well written they are not published. Maybe you all want people to be rude when writing – this you will never get from my post, by the way have a merry Christmas while you consider the THE TRUE guidelines for publishing a comment!!!!!

I am really saddened by all this destruction at home at this time of Christmas cheer!! I want to sympathise with those affected in whatever way. But I also have to say that it is a wonderful sight to see how the villagers pulled together and immediately began working to clean up and assist so that the country can return to normality as soon as possible!!! Well done guys!!! We have to use these terrible events to focus and bring back the love!!! May God bless my country and its people!! One love!! Merry Christmas to all and may we be blessed in the New Year and beyond!!!!

The death from the Christmas Eve flooding across the island now stands at five.

Two bodies were reportedly discovered in Bexon; the body of a young man was found in Grace; a body was retrieved in Micoud; and a police officer was killed last night.

BEXON: A body was discovered in Crownlands (just before Marc). It has so far been identified as a male known as ‘Taliban’. No further details on the second body.

POLICE OFFICER: Calvin Louis was reportedly crushed by a wall while trying to help persons in an area in Vieux-Fort city. Louis is from Piaye, Laborie and was working as a Special Services Unit (SSU) officer in Vieux-Fort at the time of his death.

MICOUD: There are reports that two bodies were discovered but our news team can only confirm one so far.

Much of the southern and western sections of the island are still without water, electricity and telecommunications service.

    Caribbean

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent (AP) At least eight people have died in heavy rains and floods on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent, officials said Wednesday.

The government’s National Emergency Management Organization said that one of those who died is an 18-year-old college student. One man was reported missing.

The rains and flooding prompted Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves to cut short a family vacation that had taken him to England and Rome, and he was due to return home Thursday. Photos posted by the Vatican showed that Gonsalves had met with Pope Francis.

People also lost their homes. In the heavily hit area of North Leeward in northwest St. Vincent, where a family of five died when a house crashed into their home, about 40 people showed up at a school converted into a shelter. Nicole Bonadies-Baker from the Education Ministry said that she expected more people to seek refuge there.

There was also extensive flooding and damage elsewhere in the eastern part of the Caribbean. Police in the nearby island of St. Lucia say that a man died there when a wall fell on him.

Traditional Christmas Eve midnight religious services were cancelled and several churches in the capital of Castries opened their doors to stranded people.

“It’s the worst Christmas I will ever spend,” said Jude Francis, his clothes soaked from the rains.

St. Lucia Prime Minister Kenny Anthony described the damage as an emergency and a major setback for the country.” ”I don’t think I can recall when we have had such heavy rainfall on the eve of Christmas,” he said.

In the nearby island of Dominica, dozens of homes and at least two hotels were evacuated and several roads were blocked by mudslides.

The cluster of thunderstorms came as the small islands were crowded with holiday tourists. Showers were expected to linger over the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic throughout Wednesday.

Dominicans, lets be real and thankful to God for the Bible says, “In everything we are to be thankful” We should all join our hearts and hands together and praise God because we still have life; St. Vincent and St. Lucia experience the same thing.

Lets get back to the Bible and turn from our wicked ways. God is loving and forgiving.

Just my observation: When disaster strikes people should come together and comfort each other. I am ashamed of some of the ridiculous comments made by some people during this difficult time. Furthermore, I am even more ashamed that DNO posted them. Dominicans are resilient people in time of crisis. I feel for the people the flood has affected. God is good all the time. We just have to believe.

Admin: We do not only publish opinions that we agree with.

  27. December 24, 2013

My people of Dominica, I am sure that many of you have not read the message of the Bible to know that scripture which I have quoted below, so please be sure to read it and to take heed of its message in “Spirit and in Truth”

The apostle John writes about the situations which will be effective at the end of times–which is the intensive end of humankind, those who remained conformed by “choice” and “free will” to the system of existence, which was implemented by man himself–as they chose to ignored the message of Life from God Almighty, He who has the Supreme Authority in Life–which He give to man by His nature “Love”

Here is what is spoken at Revelation 6: 12-17 once again I ask you all to take this message very seriously. The apostle John writes:

    12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

    15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And they said to the mountains and rocks, fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of His wrath has come; and who shall be able to stand it?

    • December 24, 2013

For those of you who are thinking that the end of the ages will only take 1 day–what you all are thinking is the “end of the world” –which is of the philosophy of man, not of God–please note that at the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 24, Jesus tells us through His disciples: 21 “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.

22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.

So here we who have accepted the Life which Jesus died that we might live through His blood–we have assurance that even if we might suffer through the great tribulation–we will survive those days. Why should we not accept that Divine promise from our God of Life in Love

In Toronto this passed few days we had 250,000 people left in a blackout as black as night–we had nothing basic in our homes for 36 hours. Those of us who live in the high-rises were faced with the dilemma of walking a dark hallway and stairs from 25 floors and more–so to get some warm food or a cup of hot coffee. It is said that this has never happened in the history of Toronto.

People of Dominica, God is our Living God in the Person of His Son of the flesh–His Person of Love–whom we know as Jesus Christ.

God Almighty is speaking the message of Life in Love to us today, by the Power of His
“Supernatural Influence” who is Holy Spirit.

God gives us the gifts of wisdom, understanding, and discernment to know what is His good, acceptable, and perfect will of Life, that we might know Him and to do His Will that we might live. Let those who have ears hear what the Spirit is saying.

“My Fellow Dominicans…. God is speaking to us, he is wide awake God does not sleep. We need to turn to God….”

Anonymous; Whereas what you wrote above may make sense to you; I am here to tell you that God does not speak to people in any way shape or form that causes pain and misery for any one. If one is to be blamed for such devastation, the devil is responsible; and mind you the devil is real, an evil sprit which posse many.

Remember this: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Most of the people with political power in the world are dominated by wicked sprits assigned by satan to rule, and control the mind of these people who holds high office; that is why we have no justice in the world, even in Dominica.

The damage caused by the weather is something natural, there are four seasons on earth, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. We are experiencing winter right now, hence even in the tropics such as Dominica, and the rest of the Caribbean winter does have an effect on the islands at this time of the year, in Dominica we usually have heavy rain fall.

The pattern has not changed over the centuries. Storms are not unique to this earth only, there are other planets out there where wind moves more than three hundred miles per hour constantly, all of that has to do with the maintenance of life on this planet earth.

I am not going into the latter you see because, (I doh no much, and since I doh want to hear I know about everything, I cooking Goat water, so have a good evening, I going to drink goat water, and eat dumpling and yellow yarm).

When I am finished I am going to watch a movie somebody wanted to put me in and I did not know the person was serious; I laughed at the person until yesterday when they handed me a copy of the movie, ant told me to enjoy it.

Anyway I am invited to participate in a shoot in February, I think I go be in dat wan oui!

I this time of grief, let us all pause for a moment, and listen to that still small voice of the Lord. He needs our attention, gor the bible says, in the last days perilious times shall come. Let us open up our eyes…these days are not coming, they are already here. So many disasters, crimes etc are t along place . My fellow Dominicans let us put all our petty differences aside and begin to come together as one. Let us unite. For the lord is coming soon. My prayers to the family of the little girl. I know it is very hard to deal with, Ib pray that God gives you the strength to go through.

Thank you DNO for the pictures. I hope Skeritt had a look at the pictures. While the Island is going through this agony, it is alleged, Skeritt was wining and dining in another country. I wonder if their is one Prime Minister in the whole wide world who isn’t spending the Christmas with his people. Is very unfortunate that during this time of love and goodwill, it is alleged that not even the Cabinet knew where he was during the commencement of the disaster. According a confirmed source, he was suppose to be meeting Dominicans in New Jersey, however, when certain members of his cabinet tried to communicate with him , he could not be found. I was reminded that this isn’t the first time that Skeritt has been away from the country during a disaster. Knowing Mr. Lennox Linton, he will not make those kinds of mistakes.

The man has a life also even if he is pm so he has right to spend his holiday where he’s well pls. If that didn’t happen, ppl like u wouldn’t give 2 foot where and with who he spending xmas

      December 25, 2013

I wonder if “Skerrit” as you say it was there, whether the storm would subside. Seriously!! we need to take it a notch downward, why are we politicking even the storms of life. The way some folks are getting on these days, I believe that if the sun refuses to shine they will say is “Skerrit” that causing that. Come on people we must be better than that and to know when to separate politics. Let us channel our praises and anguish at the right target. Have a blessed Christmas.

The evil that men do no longer lives with them but with their children. Sorry, Dominica, your children had to go through this experience on Christmas Eve, while your leaders, quite frankly does not give a darn.

All this is happening because of the curse coming from dem haters are putting on Dominica.Just read some of the comments, does Skerrit has anything to do with the disaster. Some are asking of his where about but they are not asking the where about of Lennox. In times like now people we should be together as one.Stop that pointing finger and let’s join hands. All for each and each for all.

@ FAST N FURIOUS……WELL SAID…Those GREEDY politicians who govern this land are causing God to remind them that he is alive and well. They take from the needy, pocket it here and elsewhere, while poor people on island are catching hell IN POVERTY, AND NOW IN NATURAL DISASTER. But thanks be to God their EVIL, WICKED, CRUEL and DICTATORIAL rule over this land is coming to an end.

Yes, it is a curse. Not the because Dominica has a tropical climate that is characterized by heavy rains. This is not typical of Dominica’s climate at all! It is a curse or the hand if God punishing Domincans for their sins.

God is ALWAYS in control. Stay safe my people.
This disasters always brings our people together and makes us stronger. All these politricks have gotten so out of hand everyone’s views are so skewed that it takes something like this to put the bickering on a side for a while.
If only we would heed from these lessons but it seems that most just go right back to their “I & ME” attitudes.

      December 24, 2013

Except for the part about god, we’d like to agree with you, and also to add that the way we learn from this disaster is to: )1 acknowledge and accept the theory of global warming as fact, and 2) take seriously the need to plan and execute an environmentally friendly policy that seeks to mitigate the rising trend of natural disasters which arise every time we have torrential rains. We all – as you said – should put all politics aside in the quest to make Dominica safe for all.

All my comments are posted to DNO staff, since they are the only people reading them. People forget the true meaning of Christmas, so the good Lord is trying to open our eyes to the true meaning and purpose of Christmas. Now we say, “Happy Holidays.” Christ is completely removed from the picture. Take what all you get. We must first know that Christ is the reason for Christmas – and not just making party preparations and giving gifts to people whose birthday its not. Christ wants us to give him ourselves. By so doing we’ll love one another, share with each other irrespective of the day and season. When we give Christ our lives we will then know the true and full meaning of Christmas, and He will guide us safely as He guided the wise men to the stable where the baby Jesus was born. Get with the program! God’s program. And He will prevent all these calamities from happening to us.

Ah ha! Centuries now, humans are unable to tell the real nature of God, or if there is really one for that matter. Man is still unable to show concrete proof of the God of whom you speak. Seems like now you alone know that he lives, and that this freakish storm and natural disaster is evidence of His revenge on a society gone astray. Check your comment again. Do you really think that some all-forgiving god is so vengeful on his own creation? If he is, and if he exists as you say, me self want nothing to do with him. People such as yourself only serve to drive away souls. Have some empathy and show sympathy for sufferers. And is you live in DA, go and extend your generosity (if you have any).

When I see the moon and stars, the sea and the sun and all living things, I know for certain no human beings did them. So Yes, There is a God, whom in HIS infinite goodness made all that available to us but not for us to worship them above HIM. But for us to enjoy and respect.

We should also never try to believe we are God – but put God above all things and all humans and wait on HIM when he believes you deserve that something he will give it to us. We have to learn to wait on God. Don’t hurry HIM.

      • 4CARS
        December 24, 2013

Go and pray to Skerritt for some “generosity.” As you said: I don’t have any. “Silver and Gold have I none; but such as I have I offer to you.” Be wise, get wisdom, call on God and be delivered. That’s more than silver and gold. But I guess you want money! as usual. You won’t be satisfied though you have enough.

        December 24, 2013

I pray that GOD-YES GOD THE POWERFUL AND LIVING GOD- will open you blind spiritual eyes so you can know the truth. So many things in this world can make you doubt that there is a GOD-so i understand- but I pray that you’ll know the truth and accept it before you die so that you will be with him in heaven- instead of doubting and then when the heavens open and GOD returns you’ll say–no shit it was true.!

On the one hand, when it suits folks like you, you criticize the man for not being on island in times of tragedies like this one. it’s as if you want to give him god-like features. And then on the other hand you people lambaste the man for seeming to assume dictatorial tendencies in executing the duties of the office. What do you guys want in Dominica?
