UPDATE: Plane mishap at Canefield Airport

The aircraft involved in the incident

The Canefield airport was closed for about 45 minutes Thursday morning, after what officials describe as a “minor” incident involving an Air Anguilla aircraft.

The small Cessna 402 aircraft carrying cargo was seeking to land at about a quarter past ten Thursday morning, when there was some slight malfunction involving a seal and a bolt, according to airport officials.

Chief Executive Officer of DASPA (Dominica Airport and Sea Port Authority) Benoit Bardouille told Dominica News Online that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft by using the left braking system (the right side was the one affected) to stop the airplane safely.

“The aircraft on its own power was able to taxi back unto the tarmac.  We have consulted with the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority and have notified them of the incident,” Bardouille told DNO.

He said there was no damage, and the plane was cleared to take off “the pilot is just awaiting his start-up instructions before the aircraft leaves” Bardouille said when DNO spoke to him  at about 11:30am.

Other planes were landing at the time, confirming that Canefield had been re-opened following the incident.

The cargo the plane was carrying was actually money.
I work just across the runway where the plane came to a halt and was able to see what was going on.
I saw members of the SSU standing guard with automatic weapons around the plane while large packages were being removed from the plane and taken to a platinum van on the runway.
There were also two buses on the runway. One of the buses was white and a lot of the money was transported to that bus also.
While they were removing the money maintenance crew was working under the plane.
After about 15 to 20 minutes the SSU went on the white bus and both the white bus and the platinum vehicle drove away.

The reason why you do not have enough time to accomplished the things you want to do,is because you spend precious time wondering about people, not very productive you will be surprise how time goes by when you are thinking about people, every second counts.

        @ Gary

…And who does not think of people and also their plans? The mind is capable of doing a lot of things as thinking and switching to one “thing/topic” at one time. The mind is indeed marvelous. It does not prevent us from performing our duties unless we allow it to do so. Guess what? We cannot pick the minds of people and know what they are thinking and what is passing through their minds. A good thing! :)

Landing a plane in cross winds is part of the basic training of a pilot. It is called crabing, where they point the nose into the wind and then line up with the runway at the last second.

Canefield may have other issues that just cross winds. I landed at Canefield some years ago and the pilot told me the winds at the airport are more like a wave breaking onto the shore. When if comes off the mountain, it blows every which way, the same as you see when wave crash on the beach.

  11. Satelite
    February 16, 2012

This airport is a nightmare, the runway runs from north to south/south to north (190 degrees and 10 degrees, while the winds blow from east to west. Whoever built this airport must be held responsible for its faulty construction. The airport should be closed down and the building and site used for something else.

So this incident is as a result of such? In previous years early 90’s Air Martinique, Air Guadeloupe, Air Caraibe’ and Liat among others were landing there. FedEx and DHL land there at least twice a week along with Bevin. What’s the difference between then and now?! I thought the report made it clear it was a malfunction on the part of the air craft.

I hope you were not using this specific incident to fuel your case of the need for pictures, because according to the article, there was NO CRASH. In light of this, the only picture you could possibly see is that of the parked aircraft which has indeed been submitted.
