Police identify victims of Castle Bruce accident

Scene of the accident

The police have identified the two men who died due to an accident which took place in Castle Bruce on Thursday.

They are Victory Lloyd, 72 of Castle Bruce, and James Austrie, 84, also of the same community.

Police PRO, Acting Inspector Simon Edwards, said the accident took place around 5:15 pm.

He said Lloyd was the driver of the vehicle, registration number, PQ498, and he was accompanied by his wife Juliette Lloyd and Austrie.

“Mr. Lloyd apparently collapsed while driving and lost control of the vehicle,” Edwards said. “The vehicle subsequently went off the road and plunged 150 feet into a ravine.”

He said the three were taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where Lloyd was officially pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

He stated that Austrie succumbed later to his injuries and was pronounced dead by a doctor.

“Mrs. Lloyd is a patient at the Princess Margaret Hospital,” Edwards stated. “Investigations into the matter continue.”

Let me state my very honest opinion on the matter of elderly motorists. I have no problem with them driving for they have to have some mode of transport to execute their daily business. My concern is this. As we get up in age, especially after seventy, our health begins to deteriorate. Our sight, hearing, reflexes, coordination, muscles, heart rate, etcetera. Probably at and after age 65, every motorist should be mandated to pass a medical checkup to ascertain his/her fitness to drive. Is this unreasonable? This measure is to protect the lives of this category of chauffeurs and other road users. We have to become proactive not remain reactive or reactionary. Hope such sensible legislations would be forthcoming.

A lot happening in castlebruce. My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the lost souls. May God comfort the living. We then know that after this horrific death there is yet a judgement to come. We just never know when, where or how we WILL go. What we can do is watch and pray so that we will always be ready through Jesus Christ!
Life is not to be gambled or played with here on earth. It is serious business! It is like being in a war where the enemy keep firing bullets and grenades at you and yet you occasionally expose your body even while your mates are trying to protect you.
Learn from others people. If you see your brothers fall in a ditch pass the other way when your turn comes. Time is running out!
People ask where is God? So long i hear about His coming where is he? People, God’s time is not ours. It is because of His grace, mercy and patience that He is not here yet for if He came many would perish!
Many more must be saved in His name.be counted!
    Glory to God!

Thats nonsense. There are quite a number of old ppl driving. They dive well too.
What about all the young people who are dying in accidents because of poor judgement. Why dont you say young people should stop driving too?

Condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased persons. After age 60, drivers should have an annual medical test to ascertain their fitness to drive. These should include but not limited to sight, hearing, heart rate,.

It’s a great shame that a 72 year old had to be driving around. My deepest most deepest condolences. the fact is one might think at age 72 you would be on pension but in this poverty strike island of ous the hustling never stops until you drop. I look around and I see 90, 95 year old farmers that still have to till the soil because of the inadequate stipend that social security gives them. God forbid if that was the fate of this 72 year old. I would tie skeritt up if it was. The treacherous road conditions coupled with driving on the edge of cliffs with no guard rails compounded by the fact he had to pay road tax for nonsense was more than enough to send this man into a coma causing the collapse. I’m waiting for the back lash but as above so below

your reasoning is not sound . There are more over 80 and 90 year olds driving in the state of Florida !. there is nothing wrong with 72 .

You are a special kind of stupid. Please do not use this forum to show how dumb you are. You live in Florida, a state full of retired people, the majority of whom still drive in their 80’s and 90’s. Are they in a poverty stricken country? The man obviously suffered a medical emergency which led to the accident. Maybe you can’t read so I will be lenient with you. The article does say he collapsed while driving. It had nothing to do with the road, it had nothing to do with his driving skills and it had nothing to do with poverty. Get a life and an education!

we take great offence to your comment about being old and driving. Though the road conditions on the island is dangerous, the accident had nothing to do with it. As for being old and driving – if you were not told you would never believe or know they were in their 70s and 80s. They look very great for the age. Mr. Austrie was fit as a horse in fact he look like he was in his early sixties. Hard work never kills, however laziness destroys.

Yes – we have great issues in this country because of poor governing and the road is in horrible condition. But this one is just simply an accident and i guess you have this every where

So you won’t get old right and you called them old hmm they looked younger than you though

      April 28, 2018

@Dapassports: What a complete and ignorant statement. First you should ask yourself how many ‘old people’ have died or been responsible for motoring deaths in recent years and I think you’ll find, based on you logic that no young person should ever be allows on the roads.
