Salisbury accident victim identified

The scene of the accident

A Salisbury man who died from a motorcycle accident at the weekend has been identified as 23-year-old Gael Andrew, police have confirmed.

Police Acting Superintendent Claude Weekes reported that Andrew was riding east to west along the Salisbury public road on his Yahama scooter when he veered off the road and subsequently plunged into a house nearby.

Andrew suffered considerable head and facial injuries from the accident and was pronounced dead at Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau, Weekes disclosed.

“He seemed to have gone off the road and ended up on a pavement. Having gone on the pavement he went airborne and plunged into a house close by,” Weekes stated

Weekes added: “The preliminary investigations suggest so far, that at the time he was riding he was not wearing the helmet and there were no other protective gear.”

Statement here “(Andrew)suffered considerable head and facial injuries from the accident and was pronounced dead at Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau,” Weekes disclosed. That is very serious. Andrew’s body was bagged at the site of the accident, but pronounced dead at hospital. Is it only me or is something wrong with that picture painted here. PRONOUNCED DEAD AT HOSPITAL BUT BAGGED AT SALISBURY! HUMM

For a young person, it is sad that he died and in such a manner.
During a conversation with someone a few days ago I stated that most drivers in general still do not learn and to drive cautiously even though they hear of accidents, related injuries and death. I suppose they are confident that it will never happen to them. They take too many chances driving on the road.
This young man must have been speeding. He should have been wearing a helmet and protective gear. The Law should make it mandatory that they wear a helmet and protective gear. In so doing their very own life could be saved.
I do feel that when they obtain a license, they should be given a leaflet about driving safely and the results of what could incur by not obeying the rules of the road and speeding.
Lives are precious. We should take every possible precaution to save lives including ours and decrease or eliminate road accidents and also injuries.

Ride with respect for yourselves and for others! Even when you wear your helmet and you dont wear your good sense somebody will still end up in stitches or under earth. When you wear your good sense you will know to wear a helmet and to ride carefully, because the road can be a death trap with or without speed, with or without gear. When I see what these guys are doing on the road I just say “hastening to the funeral home” – gear or no gear.

      August 15, 2011

You must learn to speak peace and cover them underneath the blood instead of “hastening them to the funeral home”. We know that some are careless/ disobedient but what do you do? Do u speak to them about their behaviour or do you continue to “hasten them to the funeral home with your tongue?” Remember they are someone’s son, father, bros. We all experience the challenge with our children but we have to pray and always speak to them. We cover them and ask God for his grace and mercy over their life. Do you know how many young men and women we have sent to their graves by just speaking the wrong words. Alas all we should do is PUSH – Pray until Something happen. Our genuine and contrite prayers can go a long way in turning a lot of destructive attitude in our country but we need to repent of all the bad things we said with our tongue and leave righteously and stand in the gap and pray for our young people. We were young too and we did wrong things especially we did not know the truth. So we must love and be patient with them. Down with the old saying that was taught to us to wish evil to our fellowmen. We need to love one another as we all have the same common enemy – ” The Evil one who is come to steal, kill and destroy our souls and the youth (young persons) are no exception in our society. So let us live clean so our works will be seen and then we can be examples and can speak to them with love. Not saying one thing and acting another way. We need to be role models to them. Role models doing the will of the Heavenly Father.

    August 15, 2011

sad news.the reponibility is on the rider for not wearing helmet to protect their own life wich is sad to know but the authorities need to step up their game and do wat must be done to protect them now.fine them, warn them, stop them and take the bike or whatever it is deemed necessary.for the same way they can go to a man house right up inde bush and arrest him for smoking and planting little ganja for his own use and say he break law, same way they can enforce helmet and seatbelt law.for when a man in da mountain smokes his herbs n not endanger no one life,to me the only reason they have to arrest is bcuz they feel he endangering his own life(far from the truth),so gwan police man, next time u see a reckless no helmet rider n e where n e time, stop him and ask say something,do something!and youths, just like its been said,ur head hard, but not that hard..so be wise!

So sad to see another young man perish like this.

    – who teaches motor bike/scooter riders the traffic rules and essential skills before they are allowed onto public roads?
    – how do they acquire a licence? Is there a test they must pass and if so, who conducts the test?
    – who ensures these bikes/scooters are safe and roadworthy?
    – who ensures the riders are insured?

Right now, the time has come for our police to stop every rider on the road and remove those that do not comply.
We have a long way to go but enforcement must be put into place if we are not to lose more people, primarily young ones, in this manner and endanger other road users and pedestrians.

“He was pronounced dead at Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau”. I guess that was just a formality; right? If he was not pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, why was he left on the ground for one hour, wrapped and tied in a white sheet and then taken to the hospital? Was he taken to the emergency ward or to the mortuary?

Let me educate you seeing that you are not a very bright person. Only a medical doctor can pronounce a person legally dead!

      • Justice and Truth
        August 15, 2011

This too is education. You are also not a bright person, educating others when you are in need of education. This does not mean that he was not dead at the scene. They did know that he was dead at the scene.
The medical doctor has to follow protocol in his position and formally pronounce people legally dead after examining them to ensure that they are really dead; this means no response and heart beat. He signs the paper. Generally, people do know if one is dead or not specifically in the case of an accident and this one at that.

        August 15, 2011

You must be sure the person is dead before letting them lie in their blood for an hour and then bagged and transported to the hospital before pronouncing them dead? was he an animal, YOU TALKING ABOUT EDUCATING SOMEONE!

The Police does bnot have the expecrtise to declare anyone dead ONLY a medical doctor can lawfully do so. WEven if we all know that he died on the spot it is not the police to say that he is dead. I hoe that I was of help to you and other readers. It is sas for a community to loose another young man on the very day that one was buried. Stay strong Bawi.

      August 15, 2011

Please educate yourself on a matter prior to commenting cause it makes you look uneducated. Just saying. A medical doctor is the only one that can pronounce a body dead regardless of what you may see, a good example is the situation where the body was already wrapped in a sheet as you indicated in your comment. Anyone that dies must be pronounced dead by a physician regardless of where the person dies

Another son gone, Rest In Peace my yout. The authorities aught to start to demand and enforce the rules on protective measures for bikers and motorists alike. Helmets and seat belts save lives and their use in Dominica should be made mandatory by law. Too many road fatalities in Dominica and it’s sad to know that with a little measure of caution some of them could have been avoided.

I believe the powers that b should make it MANDATORY that scooter/bike riders wear protective gear. I see scooter riders ‘scrabling’ without a piece of clothes on their backs, and no other protective gear on that should be illegal. they are not only endangering there own lives but also that other people. They need to know they will be charge for such nonesense:-? :-|
