UPDATE: Six injured in Pont Casse accident

The bus involved in the accident
The bus involved in the accident

The police say they are conducting investigations into a road traffic accident which occurred on Thursday 2nd May 2013 about 3:30 pm in the Pont Case area close to the area where the road broke on April 19, 2013.

It involved bus registration number, HE533, driven by Ramous Auguiste which was travelling in a southerly direction when it collided with a parapet and overturned.

All six occupants of the bus sustained injuries and were transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital Accident and Emergency Department where they are presently being treated.

The bus was extensively damaged.

The police are appealing to motorists to be cautious when driving, especially as the wet season is approaching and ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition.

This will definitely minimize accidents, the police say.

Of course, it is very easy to blame; however, as sad as it is, two people were buried today – DRIVER ERROR. WET ROADS, BAD ROADS, LATE START, SPEEDING (number one factor). The majority of accidents can be AVOIDED, only if the drivers would do the right thing. Be PATIENT and DRIVE CAREFULLY!

This driver should take this accident to another level and sue the government for not making the roads safe, this is if the accident was caused by something put there to make the road better. Sue public works..they need to do things better in that country called Dominica.

It is always easy to blame Government. This has nothing to do with Government, Government has done its part by placing road sign , suggesting what the speed limit is 30mph. This bus (like all others) was SPEEDING, the only reason for the accident. He should be charged with Attempted manslaughter for endangering the lives of his passengers. When traveling as passengers you have to be holding on very tight.

We must understand that no system created by man is perfect, and the same for Dominica. When Government gets money – it has to be divided in so many ways just like a parent with a household to maintain.

We have to be more responsible.

  16. I REMEMBER
    May 3, 2013

This article is addressed to the persons responsible in the Govt.ministry for road maintenance. The area where these accidents are taking place I am very, very familiar with.Dennis Labassaire and that young lady died in that area and nothing has been done regardless of the number of accidents that have taken place there before Dennis and after his accident. When this section of road was being completed, the PWD used crushed stone for road surfacing, parapet construction etc.The crushed stones used were simply covered over with the “TAR” used back then and smoothed out.Over the many years, that TAR has eroded from weather and wear and tare, consequently, the crushed stones have become visible although still embedded in the remaining tar surface and has made traction on the road surface very unstable especially for vehicles that are driven with these “bald” tires on them at great speeds especially coming down that section of hills either going northbound or south. Also, when travelling northbound after descending that hill, there is that slight right turn before getting to that straightaway where the road should be resurfaced and raised a little to creat a “bank” effect similar how automoblie racetrack are constructed. The direction of the road at that particular spot was not properly thoughtout. You turn slightly right after coming down a hill and then continue to slightly bear right again even after that.At that point, the road should have been constructed to go straight or to bear back slightly to the left.Too late for that now but there are simple ways to correct that problem as previously mentioned….and stop that nonsense of Jombie and drive slower when descending the hills in either direction and use proper tires with thread on them.

Some action need to be taken to reduce and prevent future accidents such as . signs to SLOW DOWN, Mandatory annual vehicle checks, proper barriers, police spot checks and others to reduce vehicle speed.

This accident could have been worse. Let us us not wait for next accident

Has anyone pondered on the fact that Dominica’s roads are not safely built and or maintained? Inexperience drivers also create conditions and situations that casue auto accidents. No such thing as “jumbie made it happen” and “the place curse, man” Enough of that nonsense. People need to man-up and take responsibility for their actions. Don’t blame politicians or even mention God/Jesus in all you mess. God/Jesus already promised salvation, it’s up to humans to accept it. Don’t expect to live your life facetiously and when you mess up, call on your God for help. God is at no one’s disposal. MANUP, DOMINICANS!!!

This area have nothing to do with this accident. It is the driver driving, and poor condition of the vehicle. Government should have a yearly inspection of all two,and four wheel motor vehicles and heavy equipments vehicles. owner refuse to comply.A fine should should be given $5.000 of your currency, people life are more important than rushing to make more trips as a bus driver. life is to short.

I know this man personally, and i must say that he is an experienced and veteran bus driver. Also used to drive abroad. This is the first I have ever heard of him in any sort of vehicular accident. Stop making assumptions. It’s either his vehicle was not in good condition, or we just need a new piece of road. Or both.

Its time for something to be done about bus drivers as far as I am concerned. Almost everytime i hear of an accident, it involves a bus. We know how those bus drivers drive. They have our lives in their hands and we cannot do nothing. The police and government need to get involved. Those drivers should have special courses, extra courses, and tests should be taken on them radomly to check what is in their blood. Their mental capacity should be tested to see if they are fit to be on the road. Yes, accidents happen and can happen to anyone, but when almost all the accidents involve a bus, we should ask ourselves a question. We see how they speed around bends, and sometimes don’t even want to get out of the way blowing their horn for people.. If its themselves alone by all means try to kill yourself, but don’t take down whole bus loads with you.

    WELL FED UP

“The police are appealing to motorists to be cautious when driving, especially as the wet season is approaching and ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition.”

How long will the police keep appealing? You don’t appeal to motorists. This is a height of incompetence and lack of vision. It is high time that Dominica Authorities implement speed limit and hefty fines. I get so upset every time I read about police appealing to use caution and all that. People will always be disobedient, they can kill themselves but when it come to causing injury to others, we have to implement laws. Why are we so afraid of implementing laws? Is it because we do not want to have to abide by them ourselves. Come on man. How long will this country continue to operate in such antiquated manner.

Many of the comments confirms we do not like to take responsibility for our actions. We blame “jumbie” or evil, God, the Government, etc.

Drivers must learn to drive safely and make sure their automobile is in good working condition.

Here are other reasons for accidents: Drinking, being “high” on drugs, texting, using the cellular phone, eating, tiredness, lack of sleep, not paying attention to the contion of the road and many more.

Driving standards in Dominica are shocking. Buses full of kids overtaking at breakneck speeds around corners or against oncoming traffic under the Canefield cliffs…. How many more accidents, how many deaths will it take for people to grow up and act with maturity and consideration for others when they get behind the wheel ?

When or if this happens to you, we’ll hear about driving skills. Why should you have a road for which you need extra special “driving skills” to drive on. We’re not talking about 2 accidents in this area, it’s tallying up. There is good reason now to investigate the reason for these accidents which is most likely the make up of the road. An experienced appropriate professional needs to look into this seriously. This is more than just about the way people are driving.

Firstly, I hope that all the injured make a full recovery. Secondly, I want to talk about bus drivers, the majority of whom must have mushy brains. My experience of these drivers is none other than horror. They drive (if you can call it that) with no consideration to other drivers or their passengers. They speed recklessly. They overtake on blind bends, they stop whenever, wherever and however they feel like. All in the name of earning a few bucks more. Well let me tell them, you cannot spend any money when you’re dead! But worst still, the passengers who allow them to do this while staying silent when they know that these practises are wrong. Also, why don’t all drivers, including car drivers, who care about their safety and that of their passengers, where seat belts? I suppose many have not yet experienced losing a relative or friend through the fact that they were not wearing a seat belt!

So why couldnt they just say what it is. It appears that if those people dont find a big word to use they dont feel like they doing their jobs. Like my professor say anyone who wants to use a word in a story that he knows nobody will quickly define is a fool. KISS, keep it simple silly… is better to be used when dealing with the public.

    • Justice and Truth
      May 2, 2013

I do think that the police could have used a simpler word since not everyone would know the meaning. You could have looked it up on the computer research. :)
      It means:
      1. Low wall – a low protective wall built where there is a sudden dangerous drop, e.g., along the edge of a balcony, roof or bridge. Some parapets are battlemented especially on castles, and many are built as ornamental features.
      2. Protective wall of earth, a bank of soil, rubble, or sandbags piled up along the edge of a military trench for protection from enemy fire – walls, ramparts, fortifications, stockade, bulwark.
Do you know what battlement is? It is a defensive or decorative ‘parapet’ with indentation.
Indent – a notch, recess or hollowed-out place in something such as an edge, boundary line, or coast.
Time costs money. In the country I reside in, it could be costly. This will cost you a few hundred dollars for my time.   Anyway, pleased to oblige – voluntarily.

A parapet is a low wall built at the edge of a bridge or large box culvert. This is basically to protect the edge of the bridge platform. Rails can be constructed on top of it for added protection and general safety.

Jehovah Lord you are still in the healing business. Take care of the injured, in the name of Jesus our Saviour. Drivers please take your time on the road and drive carefully. It is better to take your time and reach your destination than race and die or suffer. Give Jehovah all the praise that there were no fatalities.

Dominicans love crying voodoo every time something major happens, however a lot of people drive on the roads like they are on a race track. Knowing that they have people lives in their hands, you’d think they’d take every precaution to make sure they get to their destination safe. Hope they recover ok

Dominicans should be encouraged to use seat belts. Authorties should even make it punishable by fine, if people neglect using seat-belts. It has been confirmed by numerous international investigations that seat-belts save lives and reduce injury. When a car is overturned, the most severe spinal injury occurs when people are thrown out of the vehicle. Just my concern for the well-being and safety of people.

though you have a point ,you need to also remember that seat belt doesnt always save a life.i know of a few accidents where not wearing a seat belt turned out to be a godsent….i think it is just to us dominicans to drive carefully especially when the road is wet

      • Dasheen
        May 5, 2013

I recomment to buckle up, regardless of weather you are in a bus or a private car. Once in a bus in D/ca I tried to fasten the seat bealt but the buckle receptacle was rusted and had evidently never been used before. But it was there.

A well trained civil engineer needs to take a look at the road and interview divers as to what an why that area has so many accidents. The area can then be redesigned to remove the causes of the crashes.

The reason why nothing getting done is because every time something happens is either evil or God . We behave like we still in the middle ages. The real problems are never addressed. Why not have a huge mass and prayer service on pond casse road so it can drive away the spirits. Throw holy water on there. SMDH. See if that works

    • Truth be told
      May 2, 2013

Thank you for saying it for me. I feel sorry for God in Dominica. The day that Dominicans stop uttering God’s name in vain and get off their backsides and like the ‘parable of the talents’ in the Bible, use their God given talents to come up with solutions to their problems – God might actually help these sad jackasses!

      • May 2, 2013

Well put, no one wants to take responsibility for their actions they are so quick to call God’s name but how many of them reach out to him when things are on the up and up listen to the engineers allow them to inspect all the roads on the Island and by doing that accident might just be few in numbers .

    • Dasheen

Yah man. The holy water should do it.

      • Justice and Truth
        May 2, 2013

I reside in Toronto and although I knew the value/treasure of the Holy Water, I learned more so to use it these days.
Dominica is not the only country which has evil people. Canada has them and some as we will say, imported ones, who brought their evil habits with them.
I had a personal experience and since then I am not without Holy Water. I told the parish priest about it and also gave him some Holy Water information to read. He knows about Holy Water of course but we forget its importance. The priest informed me that he blesses his bedroom with Holy Water. We do know how rampart and wicked Satan is especially to those who are close in relationship to God.
The Mother of God, Our Dear Blessed Mother, Our Lady said to a visionary some years ago which is a message for us all: “Restore the use of Holy Water in your home.” God knows very well about this. As she speaks through the Holy Spirit, she knows it too well that we are in need of it. Some Catholics do not use it and some, not often enough. I can tell you it makes the home peaceful and gives peace of heart and mind.
I go nowhere without carrying a small bottle of Holy Water. I bless myself with Holy Water prior to going out and ask God for protection. I also bless my home and the outside surroundings as well.
St. Teresa Avila said that Satan cannot stand being near those who use Holy Water. It is a protection from evil and what may befall us. Therefore, make good use of it and inform others. God bless!

The news article said the bus “collided with a parapet”. The parapet may not have been visible; ten to one it may be hidden by overgrown shrubs, just like several others.

      • Bounty
        May 2, 2013

So if an area is overgrown with shrubs, why would a bus be driving into the shrubs? Duh!

Sometime last year there was an accident near or in that area. It was also suggested that a Mass and/or Prayer Service should be conducted there including utilizing Holy Water. Some people forgot about that.

I agree, this area needs some urgent attention and if it has to be properly re-surfaced, and add speed bumps, then this will reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities in this region or area… Some areas has too much of asphalt, in some areas… just my view…

That stretch of road tempts you to drive fast but it is deceptive and dangerous and the road surface can easily cause a vehicle to slide and spin. Please, remember the recent accident that cost two people’s lives and other incidences in tha area with fatalities.

    • Justice and Truth
      May 2, 2013

The previous accident was due to heavy rainfall which split the road. Therefore, careful about your words.
