Student injured in DSC ceiling collapse

The classroom after the ceiling collapsed
The classroom after the ceiling collapsed

One student was injured on Thursday after part of the ceiling in a classroom at the old Dominica State College (DSC) campus in Stockfarm came crashing down on her.

Another student, who witnessed the event,  said she was one of seven students sitting in class BC2 waiting for a lecturer when the incident occurred.

“We were sitting in the class waiting for it to begin and we heard a rumbling,” the student told DNO. “When we looked the ceiling was already falling on some girls who were sitting there.”

The extent of the student’s injuries is unknown at this time.

The eyewitness said that the rest of the students were able to get out of the classroom safely.

A new DSC campus has been built in Stockfarm and the majority of classes are being held in it.

Unfortunately, Some people wish it was the ceiling in the new building that had collapse…they are even disappointed it was in the old, just to have something to criticize…and they are the ones that want to convince people who to vote for on other articles…hmmmm. I wish the young lady well and I am happy for those who were not injured. Excel Educationally ladies!!!

Thank God that the children did not get hurt at lease none lost their lives. These schools need to be inspected after the hurricane season and before the new school term starts and what were they doing in the old building when there is a new one. Head mistress or head master and teachers the children are in your care put your foot down if something isn’t right.

People, everything is not political!!! A ceiling collapsed at the Apollo Theatre in London yesterday, 70-something people injured, a few critically – which political party you think the British going to blame for this? Stupid question, right? EXACTLY – just like the propensity to make everything political in this country of ours.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I only hope that this is not a sign of bad construction practices on the part of the Chinese. The Chinese have had many problems with buildings collapsing…….Let’s hope that these buildings have been built properly folks!!

well i know dere is a new building but they should fix the ceiling of the old one. i experience something simular to this last semester. turn on the fan and here goes this fan spinning on a side almost ready to fall. the students ran on a side in the class and i had to be the brave one to run and put it off. if they still want classes to be held in the old campus fix what needs to be fixed.

Rain, sun, wind, storms and hurricanes could play havoc on the building of roofs. Old buildings should be properly inspected annually or twice yearly especially the roofs.
This is a shock and experience for those who ere affected. I wish the injured a swift recuperation process.

Apollo Theatre ceiling collapses in London

    By Tom Watkins, CNN

updated 4:03 PM EST, Thu December 19, 2013

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS
“We are aware of a number of casualties,” police say
Witnesses say people emerged from the building covered in dust
“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” was playing
Ticket prices included a 1 pound “theatre restoration levy”

(CNN) — A rescue operation was under way Thursday after part of the ceiling in the Apollo Theatre in central London collapsed during a performance, trapping people inside and causing casualties, Metropolitan Police said.

It is shocking when such occur. This type of disaster occur elsewhere in the world; no exception in Canada.
A house collapsed and sunk into a hole with the occupants while they were viewing sports on TV.
You must have heard about the man in Florida, while sleeping, his room caved in, into a hole. He was never found. There are others.
We never know when the inevitable will occur. It appears what is there to happen will always happen. Nevertheless, we should ask God to protect us throughout the day and night. How many are doing that? How many go about their business with no thought of God? This is mortal and spiritual food for thought.

God is in control not man. When bad things happen to others we sympathize with them and wish them as in this case, a fast and complete recovery, hoping the injuries are not very serious.

The amount of rain we hear happening in Dominica, in the past few weeks, we are fortunate more roofs are not collapsing and more floods are not affecting the foundation of buildings. Keep praying to God to continue to help and protect us.

The Good news in a bad situation is that we now have a newly built State of The Art College. Something all can now see is really needed and timely.

  25. rise up
    December 19, 2013

My God come on Dominicans. The thing clearly states that it happened in the old building. That was the reason they constructed a new college. Say thank God is only one student and she is not dead. Wake up Dominica. Rise up. This negative vibez is destroying our country slowly.

    • um
      December 19, 2013

Tell me something though? Why did the old building reach in such a state that they had to build a new one? What happened to maintainance? How long ago was that section of the college built? And that looks like the new section of the old building

If you were smart why don’t you ask yourself.. If that happened to the old building how long will the new one last? I wonder if China would build a new one for us at that time?

You might be fooled by their political gimmicks but I am not… Solve the majored issue at hand which is to improve cash flowing into the country and you solve all these problems… If you could not maintain the old building how do you expect to maintain the new one?

Add that we should not be too quick to judge before we know what really happened. Could be the result of an earth tremor. More alarming is how we so quick to apply First World remedies even if we don’t yet know the truth of the circumstances. Typical of us, I’d say. We long so much to emulate the banality of First World society. And we wonder why we are increasingly becoming soulless. No sense of community, or neighborliness, or compassion, or understanding.
