Survivor of Penrice accident succumbs to injuries

Simon and Esprit in happier days
Simon and Esprit in happier days

The survivor of an accident in Penrice, which claimed the life of a young man from Despor on Sunday, has succumbed to her injuries.

The Princess Margaret Hospital is crowded with relatives and friends of Nadia Simon of Campbell, who was the pillion rider of Burt Esprit when their motorcycle plunged down a 32-foot precipice.

Esprit died shortly after the accident.

Simon was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital with serious injuries.

Distraught members of Simon’s family spoke to members of the media on Tuesday morning.

“Last night I come to the hospital, I talked to my sister, I pray, I stay there, I tell her Nadia will you come home? She did not say anything; she open her eyes and she close it back,” one said.

She said she had a friend with her and decided to leave for home but she returned on Tuesday morning to bring some supplies for Simon.

“When I reach in the room, my sister is not on the bed …. Lord my sister,” she wailed uncontrollably along with the rest of Simon’s family.

DNO understoods that Simon has left behind a young daughter.

Stable or unstable that’s why we should have a stàte of the art hospital instead of a state palace. Those ministers can easily be flown out what about us. Think Dominicans. These are the things we should be voting for not putting one man in a 22 million dollar 0palace

I wonder whether Nadia was LABOUR or UWP. She could have been flown to Martinique on Monday. Arrangements could have been done immediately. That’s my opinion people R.I.P. Nadia and Burt. The Good Lord will take care of your six year old daughter and parents and cousins.

Dunce, this boy was as humble as it gets…im sure it wasnt for show. Further more they have been together for years so im sure he wasnt trying to impress her. He won her heart long time. You are a little heartless to make this kind of comment here.

Could not be flown out for medical treatment? Why? Just asking, because I find it strange that no mention was made of attempts to fly her out, if she was in such a bad condition. R.I.P young couple may the spirit of Jah continue to guide your family.

      July 7, 2015

Maybe she was not stable enough to be transported

    • smh
      July 7, 2015

Is she was still unstable she couldn’t be flown out? She must be stabilized to be able to endure the journey.

      • Daron
        July 7, 2015

That’s one of my biggest fears. Thats why I cant see myself retiring in da. Serious condition means u r dead in da.

      • hmmmmm
        July 7, 2015

There are several factors to consider when deciding to fly a patient out for further medical attention there can be a critical patient and critical but stable patient, maybe she did not fit the latter criteria. It doesn’t make sense put a patient on an air ambulance only to have them go in cardio respiratory arrest during the flight and die, could she have withstood the altitude? could she have withstood the strain that a flight overseas would put on an already severely injured body? most likely not. Plus these things take a little time, contact has to be made with the receiving hospital, the doctors has to wait on a response from the receiving hospital, medical reports etc. Not to mention MONEY, at least some money has to be paid upfront to the overseas hospital, air ambulance only is in the range of $20000.

      • Tizhan
        July 7, 2015

Dominica needs to look about developing its own trauma unit rather than thinking of airlifting patients abroad. Lord knows they have enough cases to tend to. Then they need at least an air ambulance for the island to get help to patients sooner.

To Daron – Your date is already written in THE BOOK; whether or not you retire in DA Bazil will come for you wherever you are.

  18. Driver
    July 7, 2015

Watching bus drivers, truck drivers, scooter- and motorcycle drivers in DA is scary, the way they drive looks indeed as they are on a suicide mission, passengers aboard or not………. immature and reckless driving is to be observed all over DA each day.
last week in New Town I saw one scooter smashed in the rear of a SUV, the scooter driver picked up de scooter, turn it and drove away, leaving the damage on the SUV to it’s driver.
In a way it is good that DA roads clear it selves from reckless drivers, I dont pitty them at all, because as usual innocent passengers or pedestrians suffer the careless driving of the bus, truck and scooter drivers.
No weak laws and no weak law enforcement can teach such good lessons as deadly accidents. Go on speeding!!!!! LOL

    • Ba Yo Bwa
      July 7, 2015

Boss, I see it too and wonder what the h&& is going on? What’s the hurry? Where is everybody going like that, in such haste? All that speed without observing the rules of the road.

I remember well when during the 70s when the Police monitored and controlled traffic. Then you had much less vehicular and pedestrian traffic plying our roads. Today, both have grown exponentially, and one would be hard-pressed to find the Police doing traffic on a consistent, planned and organized basis.

Did not the Chinese donate some 100 motor cycles to the Police recently? Why can’t the Force train a Traffic Squad to police the roads of Dominica – town and country? That would help in minimizing breaking the traffic rules and naturally reduce accidents and vehicular deaths on our roads.

      • Ex DA Law Man
        July 7, 2015

Same thing I was saying.Much more has to be done by the tfaffic dept.Obviously there is a lack of traffic enforcement.Traffic enforcement is also a way to bring in revenue. The traffic dept. should also use it as a promotion tool. After a certain amount of tickets written by an individual, they should be rewarded or get promoted. That would would encourage them to do more in terms of enforcement .

      • Peter Potter
        July 8, 2015

The laws are there but the police is either incapable or more to the point unwilling to enforce them. However, shooting with expired tear gas at fellow citizens is well within their capability and they are quite willing to do that. A police force and its commander that is in the pocket of the ruling regime is no good to Dominica.

yes i support the statement: “theses nurses and doctors don’t even have the passion for helping people.” i was talking about that last week. they seem to be in it only for the money. they have”style n vary” like all they care about is flaunting their credentials. no passion whatsoever.

My deepest condolences to the family of both… I do not know you but I pray they find solace in their memories and pay close attention to their child as kids get attached to their parents and will be asking for them often enough. On the other hand I find the hospital staff can be real insensitive to the general public once they are not related or affiliated to them. It is a shame and is only when one brings it in the news or have a talk show host expound on it that is when something is being done… Very shameful… If you have no one to stand up for you, you end like a vagrant

      July 7, 2015

OMG…but you people not easy. Are the doctors God??? Science only goes so far. Depending on the extent of her injuries the most doctors could do is to make her as comfortable as possible. There are excellent doctors in the ICU as well as excellent nurses who monitor the ICU patients 24/7. The patients are never left alone. Someone is always watching. I can personally attest to this. My dad was a patient there and that’s the best I have ever seen a patient treated at the PMH.

This is just so very, very sad, my condolences to the families may these two young souls RIP. I see so many young people on scooters and motor bikes some ride with helmets others do not. The most frightening thing as a driver is that often these riders pass on the inside of the vehicle rather than over take on the outside. Do these young people have to take a driving test?? It appears not! In other countries it is mandatory. The death toll on the roads since the introduction of the motor scooters and motor bikes has risen considerably! I would imagine everyone now should take a road test before being allowed to carry a passenger this is total sense. There have been too many passengers killed this way. Please those in charge make this a law. Everyone takes a test before being allowed to carry a passenger!

It’s time for change and change should happen now. Every developed country has bike related laws. It’s time we implement these on our island. Why are helmets not a legal requirement, why are younger riders not restricted to certain cc classes, why does having a car liscence automatically permits an individual to be illegible to ride a motor cycle even if ones has never risen before? These are the questions that needs to be raised to the government. Live lost too many friends and reletives. It’s time for change!!!

      • real possie
        July 7, 2015

What are you talking about? PA you could ride without helmet, this was what it was just an accident, to the family so sorry for your loss. My heart really pains for the baby left behind, God only you know what you do. For the ones talking about flown out, sometimes people can’t be move because of the state they are in, you had a guy who got shot at least six times and hwe was never flown out he’s still alive, you people always have to try blame the government.

Partner/Mam, you have to walk the streets and indulge the common folks to get a taste of the ignorance that dominate in DA. Our people not even asking serious questions about their quality of life from their leaders – civic, political and non-government. You have to hear the discussion of grown men (even political leaders), talking passionately about who can get from Town to Possie in 35 minutes! Who carries a cutlass under their seats while driving. Not to “chap” a wayward snake while driving at night, but to wound someone if they get in their way. There is hardly a person in DA who can engage in civil discourse on pertinent issues without getting loud and belligerent or even telling you, quite emphatically, how to haul your mother so and so. And the behavior is everywhere in the society. I advise you to go home, do little talking and much listening and observing.

      • Hmmm
        July 7, 2015

**Campbell citizen UK** do you really have any idea what you speak of? There are laws implementing all what you speak of. Look up the laws please before you come stating this crap. There’s always programs also on the radio informing the public about the laws and safety of driving/riding in Dominica. So please stop the politricking about change and all that crap. Really?!!!! At such a sad time you just had to bring politics into it. Hop of the politics already. To the family of the victims may God give you the strength that you need at this moment. May this little girl also be protected and comforted.

She is indeed so young but Lord as merciful as you are, help her go through this. Her mum and dad were inseparable always together so I guess they went together. 26. July 7, 2015

This is very sad news for both families. I do not know the details of this particular accidents, but I must say that the manner in which some motor cycle drivers and also car drivers drive on the road I am surprised that there are not more fatalities, it’s as if they are on a suicide mission. There aught to be more public information about safety on the road.
