The accident took place on Wednesday evening

A 17-year old has died following a motor vehicle accident in Hillsborough on Wednesday evening.

She has been identified by the police as Lhana Honore of Thibaud.

Police PRO, Pellam Jno Baptiste, said the accident involved a Toyota Rav 4, registration number TK657, which was being driven by Josieh Joseph of Bourne.

He said the vehicle, with four people on board, was traveling in an easterly direction on the Oliver Leblanc Highway when it collided with the concrete base of a solar lamp pole at around 7:15 pm.

All the occupants of the vehicle were taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where they were examined and Darius and Sonilia Belle, of Cottage, were admitted. Joseph was discharged and Honore was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

A coroner’s inquest will be convened and investigations are ongoing, Jno Baptiste said.

Honore, Joseph and Darius and Sonilia Belle were transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital

was Wednesday nite not Kreole in de park, was the driver slightly drunk maybe? Perhaps he nodded fell asleep in a second and that was it, fatal blow, what was his age? was he above 25 years with experience? what a shame to lose a young life. I feel for her family. Blessings and protection to her family and friends. why did he drive into the concrete base at such an angle? that looks like he drifted to the left into the concrete base, the driver alone can answer such a question, but he will be interrogated by Traffic and no doubt such an impact he will be charged for dangerous driving, as cause of death.

Eternal rest grant unto the soul of Lhana, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen!
May the soul of Lhana and the souls of other faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!
This also includes all her deceased relatives. God bless their souls.
At this sad time, Lhana’s family is being remembered in my prayers.

This is not something that anyone anticipated, the accident and passing of Lhana at such a young age. I visualize how difficult it is for her family.
My heart, my sympathy go out to you. Take heart. May you be comforted with God’s love and strength.
I made note of her name to be inserted in the Book of Life on November 1st where all souls will be especially remembered during this month. It also includes those who I also read about on DNO including the funerals I attended in Toronto. None are forgotten.
She was only seventeen, still considered an innocent child, a minor. God is merciful. I have no doubt that He had mercy on her young soul. A purification process is required for all souls God has forgiven. There is no doubt He has forgiven the little frailties she committed during her short life.
Lhana, even though I did not know you, I feel saddened that you left, especially your family, so soon. You will be remembered in my prayers. God bless your soul!

Hello and good morning my people. First I want to offer my condolence to the family and may this young lady rest in peace. Also may the other victim make a speedy and complete recovery.
Now base on the damage of this vehicle it’s clear to me that she was traveling about sixty miles an hour when she lost control of the vehicle.
I didn’t know there was a place in Dominica called Hillsbourgh rather I only know Hillsbourgh Street in Roseau.

its the second death from reckless driving and the second death due hitting the concrete base of a solar lamp pole. commonsense, the light poles suppose to be behind the guard rails not in front. the point of a guard rail is so that if u bounce, the vehicle will slide along the guard rail and prevent one from going over the other side.
but based on the picture i am not sure if there is a guardrail in that area.
may her soul rest in peace

Why is the poles in front of the guard rails

    • oh boy
      October 27, 2016

I totally agree..these concrete base should be at the back of the guard rail and I find that they are so much bigger compared to the ones under the Canefield Cliff that are much small and neater. Something is wrong with the engineering indeed.

        October 27, 2016

        Wat about Rubber Rail? Eh?

    • October 27, 2016

The base of the solar lights is not obstructing traffic, to hit the base one has to drive off the road. Last time I checked to get a driver’s license you have to beable to keep and control the vehicle on the road.

      • dortyboy
        October 28, 2016

I agree with traffic. The was just poor driving. He went off road and collided with the pole . Also the location of the pole there are no guard rails. He should have been much more careful. From what I heard he was speeding and driving recklessly. Poor girl just lost her life because of one persons stupidity.

      • Jen
        October 29, 2016

This is why it is called an accident! No one intended to hit the pole base or anywhere close to it. If in case you do, the guard rail would help save your life. What is there now has been taking lives so it is not working!

    • Road works engineer England
      October 28, 2016

The lights are incorrectly installed the concrete base should be below ground level not sticking up out of the ground above road height . The light poles are designed to be cut at the base when hit by a vehicle destroying the pole and allowing the occupants of the vehicle to walk away. When u place the pole on an above ground concrete base the vehicle hits the concrete base causing significant damage and death to the occupants traveling in the motor vehicle . Whoever is installing these poles have no clue about road safety or safety measures designed into the structures they are installing. I guess they will only learn when they are held responsible for installing these lights in such a fashion that renders safety measures built into them useless

.. by the CHEAPEST BIDER! Projects should be properly planned .. drafted and executed!

    • BJD
      October 29, 2016

I agree. A guard rail is designed to save people , and placing concrete pillars just defeats the purpose of the installation.

I hope some basic common sense will tell the engineering and safety people that they should be changed. Running into the guard rail would probably have a less disastrous result.

Can one go east on EOL Highway. Heading to Possie sounds north going to roseau sounds south. Clarify!

    • A
      October 27, 2016

Yes, as it is not a straight line road running from south to north. For example after the Hillsboro bridge making a left turn will have you heading west for a while.

      • zandoli
        October 27, 2016

But if you are going to Portsmouth from Roseau, one would say you are heading north regardless of the twists and turns in the road and your position thereof.

      • Dominican
        October 27, 2016

The vehicle was heading north! These people have no sense of direction, it was no where close to the bridge that leads east. And the child is from Possie not Thibaud jeez

    • Yes Fada!
      October 27, 2016

Portsmouth is to the north of the island, you are correct in that sense … but the EOL Highway is not on a straight north-south axis. A vehicle turning right from the Tarou stretch to the Layou River bridge is travelling in an easterly direction until it changes direction again, and again, and again. Think about it … the Caribbean Sea is on the west of the island, any perpendicular movement from that is going east.

Condolences to Lhana’s family and friends, I can only imagine your pain and grief. May God strengthen you all through this time.

On a next note as a concern driver, although we welcome the solar lights I see the bases posing a real danger to motorist in the event they slide of the road or am accident happen.
People let’s be extremely cautious during the festive season and be careful on the road.

    • A
      October 27, 2016

Well if you slide off the road, you could hit a tree, go down a precipice, hit a house, or end up on a stony beach and we could go on. For now let us just blame it on the base of solar lights, while we fill or valleys cut trees close roads, move houses and other concrete structures away from roads and continue to avoid the bad driving habits our drivers. :?:

We have always been losing young brilliant people; the difference now is social media and instance news reporting we value. Almost every day, I remember a very close friend of mine who died quite young. Death when it happens, is heart breaking for family and friends but each of us will experience it. How can we help the grieving families? By offering our sympathies and help anyway we can.

My Sympathy to the family of young Honore; may her soul rest in peace. To the ones in hospital, I wish you a full recovery. To the driver, the only one who seemed to escape physically but emotionally, we know you are suffering and again could be worried what the investigation will or not find.

I have no idea what caused the accident neither is anyone who was not an eye witness. All we know is a tragedy of the worst kind happened and we have four families and communities suffering and one have the heart wrenching task of burying their daughter My heart goes out to all.

People as you need God’s inspiration and graces to comprehend what happens with the soul and God when it makes the transition from life to death.
If you are a faithful practicing Catholic, an inspired one and read/hear relevant information, you would comprehend and not agree with those who also know nothing.
        STOP JUDGING!
November is the month of the souls as the Catholic Church specifically remembers them, whoever they are, wherever they died in the world.
God is the Judge. We are in no position to say where the souls are. I always say, I pray and hope they are, at least in Purgatory being purified which some of you do not believe. If there is no Purgatory, ask yourself, for your sins, are you forgiven and where will your soul end up in eternity? Pray to God for this enlightenment.
God loves us all. We must not take him for granted. He wants all souls to be saved. He knows who He will forgive and who He will not, based on their sins. Leave it at that.

The problem with some of you, I assume non-Catholics, who also renounced your Catholic Faith, you think you know everything. This is your big mistake.
      You are not God!
You who make that statement have no idea if you will ever enter Heaven. You are too presumptuous. You are judging. Our Lord Jesus Christ warned us about judging.
Do you think by renouncing your Catholic Faith, joining another church, reading the Bible, listening to someone thunderously preached it, a watered-down version that you will enter God’s Kingdom? On that day you and those who influenced you will find out.
Our God is a merciful God. She was only seventeen. Maybe not as great a sinner as you. I would love to continue. However, I ask you to read certain Catholic books, one of it is, The Diary of Sister Faustina Kowalska of Poland, a Nun. It is now a book, “Divine Mercy In My Soul.”
There are also many other books and relevant information you should read.

Condolences to the family of this teen.

It is very sad and I am a bit concerned. I was at Creole in the Park and the amount of alcohol I saw teenagers drinking it wasn’t funny. I don’t know if the accident was caused because of the driver being under the influence but we need to adopt a system in Dominica whereby people need an id to buy alcohol. We need to safeguard our youth especially. And people in bars should at least use discretion when selling alcohol to young people even if our laws are not enforced.
These are the bills and enforcements that should be stressed on in parliament at this time.

    • Setup
      October 27, 2016

My dear, accidents occur whether you are drunk or sober. Where the road is large or small, lit or unlit. utility poles or not. Some vehicles enter people’s homes. That is why it is called an accident. Carelessness of another could have caused the accident, or, misjudgment.
No matter what system they adopt, there will still be accidents. Because some drivers and pedestrians, think the road belongs to them. Overtake vehicles, even when another vehicle is coming. Selfishness, stupidity, (YES drunk driving) immature drivers, and there are those that just cannot drive. I am a driver, and I see so many drivers doing things on the road, it is a miracle that more accidents don’t happen.
Some drivers drive fast and they cannot control the vehicles when they drive around a bend. Foreigners rent vehicles and most of them don’t know where they are going. I have met them around bends. They just drive up breaking entry. :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
I pray for safety on the roads…

Correction. Driver should not drink AT ALL. Appoint a designated driver and make sure that person does not ingest any alcohol; Not even one beer. I don’t know why we in Da feel that to have a good time we must ingest alcohol. That substance does no one any good. Its long term use destroys the liver and other body organs. Stupes.
