A man who was rushed to the Princess Margaret Hospital following a vehicular accident which occurred on the road to Soufriere has died.
Canefield resident, Laplee Luke, died at approximately 5:30 am on Saturday morning.
The accident occurred around 4:00 am on Saturday August 31st , 2013.
“We were coming down to Soufriere and the vehicle slide and hit the left side of the road and next thing I know we upside down in the car,” stated 23 year old Marshall Paul of Pottersville, an occupant of the vehicle.
He stated that the vehicle left the road and flipped approximately five times, before coming to a stop in a 15 to 30 foot ditch on the right side of the road.
“My padna was outside the vehicle already as he was on the passenger side next to the driver, but I was at the back and my hand was trapped, so I had to force my way out,” Paul added.
23-year-old Donnie Defoe of Canefield who sat next to the driver, Laplee Luke, said when the vehicle stopped and he looked at his friend Luke, it seemed as if his neck was broken as it was turned backwards which frightened him. He said Luke also had difficulty breathing.
“We pulled him out of the vehicle but we could not carry him up the hill as it was too steep, as all three of us kept sliding back down, so we left him, called the ambulance then made our way up,” Defoe explained.
He noted that the driver was driving at a reasonable speed but the wet road may be what caused the vehicle to slide, as it was raining lightly at the time of the accident.
Defoe said what was frustrating is that a number of buses passed without stopping to offer any assistance other than instructing them to call the ambulance.
The young men’s clothing was stained with blood but they suffered only minor scrapes and bruises and say they are thankful to be alive after witnessing their lives flash before their eyes.
However Luke was not as lucky as his two friends and had to be stabilized on a stretcher then pulled out of the ditch by fire and ambulance personnel, before he was placed into the waiting ambulance.
The car the young men were traveling in, was a grey Mitsubishi.
this is very unfortunate… “/><'')(;
Oh dear Laplee……I remember your smiley face….and helping me get mangoes of the tree in the yard…..such a happy and humble young man….always well kept….your mom is a strong woman…god bless her heart and keep her close in this time of grief….Just so much one could bare….you are home with our father….we love you!……Im so sorry Marcia……i wish i could hold and comfort you…..but my prayers for sure is with you…..you are a strong courageous woman…..good bye Laplee….as the tears run down my face i can see your smile….and thats what i want to remember forever…..R.I.P love…..Salute!
I know people never call accident on themselves they just come unwelcome so rest in peace my brother and my condolences goes out to his family and his friends that were with him.hang in there with comfort from the lord
To everyone bashing the bus drivers; I know that unless you are a trained emergency responder you can do more harm that good when you try to ‘assist’ in am accident. The best thing is to call the professionals and wait for them to do what they are trained to do. Even his friends moving him and trying to head up the hill with him could have agravated his injuries more especially if his neck and spine where injured in the accident.
sad. RIP
The government must make it mandatory to use seat belts; also an airbag in front of the wheel. In the event of a collision the bag would activate and protect the chest.
one day we all will learn to wear our seatbelts which coud have would have saved the brother, but nooo we do not respect seatbelts which is the law.
My sympathy to the young man an his familly.
Not an excuse for the bus drivers who did not stop. However with the way people being hijacked these day wonder if that is why no one wants to stop to pick up anyone these days. Dont be to quick to judge. God’s merci on us all
Sad way to die.
I am sorry to hear of the passing of the young man. But fellow Dominicans I am admonishing you to wear seatbelts even if you are in the backseat. I do not know whether the guy had seatbelt or not but seatbelts have proven to save lives, especially in roll-over situations like this. Better be safe than sorry.
May your soul rest in god’s perfect peace Lapley..always smiling a very kind heart..god knew best..Honour is memory remembering his kind demenour..accept my sympathies to his family..God is able!! ONE LOVE!
I am not saying they could saved his life, but if these bus drivers had given a helping hand who knows he could have lived a couple hours longer. This is real bad I doubt they had an emergency for not stopping. Sorry to sad but these bus drivers might need help one day you never know. They refused to assist friends in helping their dying friend whereas maybe rushing to made money.
Boy, all 90% of bus drivers want is your money. **** em dem man just not helpful eno, is a always wat you can do for me type of thing. R~I~P bro
R.I.P WestSide 4 Life…………another one gone too soon……

may his soul rest in peace
I am indeed saddened to hear of this young man’s passing; may God strengthen his loved ones as they deal with this loss.
To all those who passed by and did not attempt to do more for their fellow countrymen; well lets just hope that you are not treated the same way you treated these young men.
i am so disapponted in the bus drivers, is this how we have become!
I`m seat at work this Sunday morning with tears in my eyes after reading about this sad and unfortunate accident. I don’t know any of the victims but was saddened at the fact that one of the victims stated “what was frustrating is that a number of buses passed without stopping to offer any assistance other than instructing them to call the ambulance”. Unless these bus drivers were dealing with an emergency themselves, it hurts to know they are fellow Dominicans. Why would you pass by an accident on such a remote road without offering assistance? I am not saying that Laplee Luke would have survived, but I hope this stays on their conscience not knowing if their intervention would have made a difference. I hope they are never in the same situation, whoever they may be.
Your comment has made me feel ever sadder.
bus drivers are the worst type in da. been there.
Sorry he did not made it gone so young. My heartfelt sympathy to his family may he RIP. May
the Almighty strengthen his friends and family at this sad moment.
Buses passed and no one stopped to help what kind of bus drivers with on courtesy that’s a real shame. They should be able to help others on the road in time of need. I recalled the car I was travelling went into a gutter in Dosdane when we ask a bus driver for help he said he was busy, it was disgusting to see how our drivers behave.
May his departed soul rest in eternal peace.
That how’s piggish w e are come ing not helping our people Dominican before I was boosting to some people would stop every transport and ask if u need help and not move until help comes that was before but not now shame shame
Let’s get back like before helping Each other and stoping we are better than each other
Rest in perfect Peace, Laplee. Hold strong the other family members, Teh and Soliel.
once is dominica something happen.to u dus know u finir bat u dead.because those nurses and doc that there self dosnt mek sence the hospital self dosnt make sence.no equipments to save a traumatized man thar was involved in a serious accident.god be with us
Weh let me make something fundamentally clear to u! Our nurses and Doctors are HIGHLY COMPETENT to take care of a traumatized man, woman or child and anything case st presents itself to them. But what the HECK can they do if there isnt d rite equipment and or resources to get the job done? They work their butts off to ensure every patient that comes dere way go back to home to their love ones. No matter d attitude of the nurses or doctors DONT b quick to pass judgement bcz u dont know the HELL dey r facing to take care of ppl. Im pissed at ur comment u cant speak unless ur d one who is by d fire feeling the heat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame on u for blasting our health care professionals if dey cnt get d job done y dont u come on board n make a difference rather than u jus stay running ur mouth like a tap dat cannot b closed, yet still d water it lets go is dirty and useless to all those who is within its reach.
my sentiments exactly!

This is really sad. SHAME ON THE BUS DRIVERS!
what the bus drivers good at is overtaking other vehicles and insulting other drivers my condolences to the family
I was pull up with Lapley 2weeks ago canefield and Look at what has happened to him un expectedly. We were in the same class in D.G.S he was a close friend to me no matter what.I am really hurt to the max that I lost a 2 friends in the week I am honestly crying… MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
DEATH IS ONLY THE BEGINNING
A man who was rushed the Princess Margaret Hospital following vehicular .rushed the princess Margaret ? Where de the coming out
in light of the lack of compassion by the bus drivers it would seem that we are losing our christlike qualities in dominica
We have already lost it. I JUST CANNOT BELIEVE IT MAN. IN DOMINICA?
Lord have mercy
How sad! I hope, in time, the injured will fully recover. May God assist you.
To his family and friends, I extend my deepest sympathy.
God our Judge is love, compassionate, merciful and forgiving.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen!
Rest in Laplee. You were warm and always smiled. We enjoyed teaching you at the Newtown Primary,
Not sure if I know the person, but may his soul rest in peace. my condolences to his family.
Help them to do what ? They should not have moved Him in the first place if they noticed He had a serious neck injury .trying to get Him up the steep slope and sliding back several times with him only aggravates the injury,Would have been better to just wait for the Fire and Ambulance service .The Bus Drivers gave them the best advice of course they could have stayed with them and given them some kind of support by reassuring them that the Ambulance was actually on the way for their Friend!
They should not have moved Him in the first place if they noticed He had a serious neck injury.
I agree completely. In sports injuries and accidents the victim should not be moved unless by trained professionals. Nonetheless, the bus drivers could have stayed a while and at least offered some comfort and prayed with them. That would have been the right thing to do.
FYI the slope was muddy and sliding downwards. They did not land at the bottom of the cliff but the bumper got stuck in the mud. There was a chance of them and the vehicle sliding further.
I forgive you for your ignorance. Of all the comments, which one of you were there and knows what really happened?
R I P
No one knows the future…We need to remember how fragile our lives are. We live from breath to breath.
May his soul rest in peace.
So Sad..

marshall paul
But DNO u not easy.:. I was the first one who reported he died since this afternoon but u refuse to post my comment saying he died; way before you reported it .
@Missy….S-E-R-I-O-U-S-L-Y!!!!! Is this the BEST thing you can say in a tragic situation like this??? HAVE A HEART! Shakes my headdddd
My condolences to the family.. Why would’nt the bus drivers stop to help? My goodness, we are getting selfish these days. We must be careful, buses have accidents all the time. Perhaps they did not want to get their pretty buses soiled.. We also need to get more members of the public to learn some basic first aid; that could be a big help in times like these.
So Dominica come
Wow A number of buses passed by without stopping, what did skerrit do to my people? Where is the love we used to have in Dominica?
If it was a bus load of people to make some money they would have stopped.shame on you all bus drivers
A number of buses passed by without stopping???
Is this Newyork??? In little DA something like that happend at that time of the morning and our fellow Dominicans not offering assistance??
This is really hard to digest
magway sa….nobody stopped to help??? this is really sad..smh..i pray he recovers soon..
Hope for a speedy recovery
All the praise and glory to the only one who could have stepped in and make this what it was – it could have been so much worse.
When my mum called me early this morning crying to tell me about my baby brother Marshall, all I could do is cry. Don’t know what I would do if this had turned out differently.
Thank you Lord for sparing all of their lives! We are eternally grateful.
Help if you can. But what do you do if you can’t? Call the ambulane!
Rest in peace Laplee
Them bus drivers probably thinking they doh want want to dirty inside they bus. Smh, people just aren’t helpful anymore.
I heard this man is dead now.
I heard this man has now passed on.
it seemed as if his neck was broken as it was turned backwards which frightened him.
We pulled him out of the vehicle…..
Incredulous!!!!!
No one stopped to help them. How sad.
SHAME on those passersby .What is this country coming to.
4:00 AM in the morning and some young boys stops me with blood on their clothes and I don’t see any clear indication that there has been an accident from where i am sitting inside my vehicle with my family…? Do u really expect anybody to in their right mind, knowing the type of criminal environment we are living in right now, to stop their vehicle and ‘assist’??!
This isn’t 4:00pm in the afternoon, it’s 4:00 AM in the morning! I personally know people who have been hijacked with knife under their throat or guns in their back in Dominica, playing good samaritan picking up strangers, so u really cannot blame them drivers for passing straight.
This is what we have allowed our society to become.
slow down u on soufrouiere road and u goign fast enough for the car to flip that many times sorry u injured but u learn the hard way to take ur time when u driving
if da comment bout da bus drivers is true, den im not surprises… bus drivers in da area, are no longer sympathetic, da way dey act wit each other on d bus stop is like pigs… its sad dey would behave that way, since dey use d road every day…. smh… brickbats to da bus drivers….
give him paracitamol and send him home. typical means of treatment.
lmaoooooo seriously????
The government should embark on making arrangement to train ppl more in the village also get the media involved in case of an mva -motor vehicle accident how to move and lift i ham than good.also they need to invest in a proper 911 call center for more efficient services these police have their work to do plus 911 calls it can be over whelming and i recall visiting the country i called 911 to transfer to the hospital and it wasn’t a pleasant call at all i was treated like a terrorist.
1st of, thank God for the lives spared and may the deceased rest in peace.
Now. Best DNO give up that news thing. Its either they give erroneous information or they give erroneous information.(yes, that was deliberate)
I’m reading this story and if i wasnt Laplee’s neighbour, i’d be lead to think he was still alive. smh
You can’t report News and use such loose wording. Might want to sound nice and flashy but when it boils down to it, just give the news straight up because that’s what counts.
hope he makes it
But he died
A number of buses passed by without stopping.
I WILL HELP MY MOST DESTRUCTIVE ENEMY IN TIMES LIKE THESE.
Brickbats to you the drivers concerned. It could have been me involved in the accident.
Sometimes is best that non-emergency trained people dont get involved as they can do more harm than good to the badly injured. But they can assist by informing the accident and emergency department or if possible any nurses or doctor residing in the area.
I guess the only issue with a bus driver helping is that they won’t have been trained in first response care and could have caused more damage.
@ % it could be there own family they were passing straight
While what you’re saying is accurate, you can look at it from the perspective of the bus drivers. It could have been a fake cry for help with the intention to rob the bus drivers. With the level of robberies and crime/violence, persons have to be so wary these days about whom they extend help to.
That concerns me too, wow, says allot.
hope he makes it, wish him a speedy recovery
I cannot understand why Liliy would say ‘hope he makes it, wish him a speedy recovery’ and why other persons would click the like button when the headline of the story and the story itself indicate that the young man has passed from this life in such unfortunate circumstances. This is indeed a sad story and I extend condolences to the family of the young man concerned. The other two young men appear to have survived this incident with minor injuries so I wish them well and hope for their full recoveries. May your friend rest peacefully with our maker. Peace
if you put your reading glasses you will see that the post is updated.previously it said he was in serious condition.(see whose the fool now)
who could dislike a comment like that
wish him all the best
