UPDATE: Plane mishap at Canefield

plance crash

There has been an accident involving a small aircraft at the Canefield Airport.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon.

CEO of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) told DNO the aircraft was a private one coming into Dominica from Venezuela.

He said there were six passengers and one crew member aboard.

He stated that one person suffered lacerations when exiting the aircraft.

That person was treated but not hospitalized.

Eyewitnesses said a wing on the aircraft was damaged and so was a fence surrounding the airport.

Investigations into this matter continue.

Seven passengers coming from Venezuela on a private plane? What are they doing here? I thought Venezuelans could not get U.S.$. from their banks for pleasure trips. How/what money did they use to pay for their tickets for a start?

The flight’s last port of embarkation was Venezuela, we have no idea as to what other stops it could have made.

I don’t know where you live but suggest you dust off your geography. Dominica is tropical all the the time. DNO show live temperatures on this site, right now at 8 am. it is 26 degrees C. outside.

LOL…what a silly comment! If you want to experience REAL cold weather, fly up to Toronto today where it’s about 20 degrees F and 3 feet of snow.

The weather here has been warm and beautiful – do you live in a cave?

Sometimes i am saddened by how we have allowed ourselves to be colored and blinded by politics. This accident could have claimed the lives of someone dear to anyone of us and yet all some of us can think of sharing is our ignorant opinion and we feel proud to do so. This plane could have landed on a bus or in an area where there are hundreds of people in a Carnival activity and we who making foolish jokes about it would be shedding croc tears for the dead. Can we try for once to discuss an issue especially a non political one without tainting it with politics. I am sure that we can do much better then that. Finally, the PM is human and humans get sick and eventually leave this earth to where we all came from. Can we all just try to be a little loving, tolerant and think before typing and sending to this forum? I hope and pray.

The pilot may not have been familiar with landing at Canefield.

I don’t agree with you. This story is fully justified in my view. DNO will update us later. This is just to make us aware of the incident. It was breaking news!!! Well done DNO for letting us know. Much appreciated.

  9. February 8, 2015

Leave DNO in peace it is one of the news media that keeps us inform with facts . Thanks DNO for making us aware of the plane accident.

  10. February 8, 2015

Hope they cover the plane and secure the scene untill the proper authorties comes to investigate the cause of that misharp.

DNO, I always appreciate your news; but however, rushing to give ‘Breaking New’ with no basic information is no news. I can understand it is sketchy but it should have some substance. Canefield Airport is less than 5 miles from Roseau and therefore you could wait until some basic info is known before putting it out. I mean you are unsure whether it has passengers or cargo, nothing about the fate of the pilot, yet pictures are there to confirm the accident. Information like this leaves too much room for speculation and gossip. Right now I am wondering because one blogger said it is Venezuelan registered airline and hopes the Pm is not on it. I will eat it because that’s the restaurant I go to for Dominica news. I am hungry and thankful for it but I would much rather if it were cooked with some salt and seasonings. I STILL LOV DNO

    February 8, 2015

Some people just do not know what to write in a comment. The only thing someone is thinking off, the Pm was not on the plane coming for a check up. Are you really concerned about his health since the Pm came out publicly and said he is ok? The Pm can be sick he is human, and it can be anyone of us tomorrow including you. It would be better you go on your knees and praying for him so God can direct him to do the nation’s business instead of being so negative.

Recently so many small air planes lande on the highways for one reason or the other accidents are just accidents. does that means we should do some thing about the high way they happen to land on??? only in Dominica. Thanks D.N.O. The country nice Boy!!!!!

    February 8, 2015

I doubt there will be much official info. forthcoming re. this Venezuela registered Cessna 404 Titan. (10 seater + 2 pilots) The runway at Canefield is of adequate length to accommodate this type of aircraft.

    • Malatete
      February 9, 2015

PS. A few hours after the accident the Aviation Safety Network already reported that the plane is damaged beyond repair and written off. It further states that it was on a “domestic scheduled passenger flight”, which I do not really comprehend. Perhaps our sea- & airport authority will give more clarification of this.

  17. February 8, 2015

its a Venezuelan registered aircraft think of it the pm should make a statement i hope he was not on the aircraft coming from check up

DNO: Why report on an incident without details? If you were able to obtain photo of the scene surely you could conduct interviews to determine whether the plane was carrying passengers or cargo.
Gather the facts then share the information with your readers. I think other readers will agree.
    Thank you

      February 8, 2015

I disagree because it is total hogwash you talking there.

I’ve seen CNN with photos, even videos, of accidents or other news story without full details.
It is a breaking news. The important thing is having the story out there so people could be aware of the accident. This is the new media, not the once a week newspaper where people take their jolly time to get info. I am sure DNO will update as they normally do.

Thanks DNO…. I wouldn’t know of this accident without you. KEEP IT UP.

      February 8, 2015

What does it matter if it was carrying people or cargo?

It crashed, that happens everyday, hundreds of live’s are lost in incidents such as this! We are lucky there has not been more crashes there considering that has never been a safe place to land or take off due to Wind-share. Dominica is the only place on this green earth with an airport runway erected North and South, with the ocean West of the runway! In regards to the lost of control, as we read, that makes no sense, because the only way one can loose control of an aircraft is if there is some hydraulic failure, for all we know the problem could be related to “Wind-share.”

    • Ex DA law man
      February 9, 2015

There is something called breaking news, meaning that it just happened. The investigation has to be done before the cause of the crash is known.Thats how it’s done.DNO is just letting the public know there was a crash.Just a little common sense.

  19. February 8, 2015

Thank God for his mercies . This could have been more serious had it landed on the businesses with employees presently at work , on road where vehicles are being driven , on a church filled with hundreds , . Which leads me to question the safety of employees at the industrial sites including Clear harbor and others . Sukies blue flames gas bulk is within that same area too . I think something needs to be done about this airport . We have schools with hundreds of our children and airplanes flying within that vicinity could result in catastrophy . I am saying the authorities need to look into this now and not wait until some disaster leads to a crisis to come running .
    Just saying

    • February 8, 2015

They said a ferry terminal is going to be placed there so lets hope soon , but I agree with you gorillaz .

      February 8, 2015

Clearly my friend you have never travelled anywhere; almost every major airport in the world is near or within a city where thousands of people work. So this ridiculous comment about people safety and what not just speaks how ignorant you are. This is the nature of air travel, as with any other form of travel; accidents happen, what you should be commenting about is how prepared we are to deal with such things when they happen.

      • The Facts
        February 8, 2015

You made some good points. Accidents happen and will always happen; some also strange ones which make people wonder how could this occur.
When they take off and are flying, they also fly over business and residential buildings; overhead, where people are also driving and walking. They have no alternative. Some of them have crashed into roofs of houses and also on the streets with fatalities.
All we can do is pray and hope for the best that they will not crash in our area and/or not crash at all. This may be wishful thinking.

You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. Death is inevitable.

    • The Facts
      February 8, 2015

We never know what may occur. We reside in a world where anything could occur, at any time and when we least expect it.
You do know earthquakes occur without warning. Then there are vehicular accidents. They could be through negligence or not. Some people die in their sleep, young and old. Accidents occur at home, at work or wherever we may be which may cause the immediate demise of residents, employees, pedestrians, etc., or later. Those who are fortunate for whatever reason, only God knows, escape injury.
The best you can do when you live your home to go anywhere is to pray to God to protect you and keep you safe. If this is to be, it will be.

Are you also scared of falling alseep? one can also die in on’s sleep. We all need to secure our selves with Christ and that spirit of fear will be no more.
