UPDATE: Two dead in Pond Casse accident

Norran Jno Hope
Norran Jno Hope

DNO can now confirm that two members of the Dominica National Football Team were killed in an accident in the Pond Casse area on Friday.

This is according to Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean, who was on the scene.

The two men have been identified as National Coach Kurt Hector and Norran Jno Hope.

Their mangled bodies were removed from the vehicle earlier.

The accident occurred when the vehicle in which they were travelling plunged into a huge opening in the section of the road between Pond Casse and Tarish Pit, caused by heavy rains.

It happened around 5:30 am, according to the police. The men were on their way to meet their team mates for a trip to St. Vincent  to compete in the Windward Island Football tournament.

Another member of the national football team, Joslyn Prince, who was traveling with Hector and Jno Hope, though injured, was able to climb out of the ravine-like opening and taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he was taken into surgery this morning, according to reports.

EDITOR’S NOTE: DNO would like to extend deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.

People may say it’s politics but I have to ask this question. Why wasn’t there police officers or other officials patrolling the roads for accidents, landslides etc? Considering that it had been raining for days. If the government has funds for all other nonsense why are funds not allocated for such vital services?

:?:  Is this not bad management and organisation by those responsible that those footballers involved in the accident had to be driving themselves to the airport ?Should they not be camping with their other teamates, spending the night housed together and leaving for the airport in the same vehicle with a designated chauffeur? How disorganised, backward and disrespectful can this island continue to be towards their own?The family of those involved in the accident, should take the authority and those resmonsible to task, holding them responsible! Those of you who is so naiive, backward thinking and politically blind, give me a thumbs down!

sometimes the easy thing to say is what if…and we can imagine so many ways things could have been done differently ..ok lets say what if according to your suggestion they were all housed together overnight and they all travelled together on a bus headed to the airport that day ….Please lets not even try to imagine what could have happened….instead of 2 dead we could have a bus load of players dead in that ditch….
And although I agree with you that there is always room for improvement lets not point fingures now but endeavour to learn from our mistakes.

On behalf of all the people whos lives was saved by this youngman climbing up this clif,i would like to say thanks, this could been been us down this clif, you first stop this taxi, and we were not far behind , as this a road we travel to work everyday we would not be expecting such a wide gap in the road, and also the first taxi driver who parked his bus across the road to ensure no one pass.

The more I think about this the more I think that we had a miracle happen in Dominica today. Although we are all saddened waking up to this sad reality this mornin., Can you imagine the number of Dominicans that could have lost their lives today if that one soul was not spared? Honestly even in this painfull moment God was present and saw it necessary not only to save Joslyn’s life but gave him the strengh to climb that 40ft ledge to get there in time to warn others, from falling into that ditch.
Dont want to imagine how many more lives could have been lost today in that ditch…. soooo I offer a prayer of praise for all the lives saved…But also feel saddened by the two young lives lost.
May they find peace. And may God give strength to their families and love ones. And to all the Dominicans who despite the fact that we dont know them personally and maybe live abroad, but could not hold back the tears, God be with you…because I know lots of Dominicans cried today. I did…. could not contain myself. So sad.

This is a very very sad day for the footballing family in Dominica. Kurt did great service to the country both as a player and as a coach. Noran was just about to make his senior debut in that tournament. Very sad to lose them in that manner. We have to continue praying for their immediate family and also for Joslen Prince to recover fully from his injuries. We have to remember that Joslyn is a hero because he was able to save lives by stopping other vehicles before they went down in that ditch too. This is still very hard to sink in.

My condolences to the loved ones of Kurt and Norran, and I hope they hold the Dominica Football Association accountable for the negligent arrangement that was made for the team to travel on national duty. DFA has no regard for the welfare of the coach and players. These men should have been either overnighting in Marigot before this early morning flight or camp together in Roseau and travel together as a team on the same bus. Kurt should be driving at 2 a.m to Laplaine and Grand Fond to pick up players. This is unacceptable, and all these contribute to the team’s poor performance and low ranking over the past years. Poor management of the DFA. The executive of DFA should do the honorable thing and resign. DFA should absorb all expenses of this accident. I am very upset!!!!!!!!!

Let s for argument sake say that they overnighted in marigot got onto the flight and the plane went down right after take off due to the same inclement weather who would you blame? We cannot change our terrain. We just have to pray constantly for God s grace and mercy for when we are faced with such unexpected tragedy. Ido not know the people affected but it sure moved me to tears.

      April 19, 2013

I agree. Many people will dislike this statement simply because most my fellow Dominicans cannot handle the truth.

    • April 19, 2013

Are you certain that the DFA made these arrangements, or was it the individuals choice? This accident could have happened to any one on that road at that time.

Find something else to say, this is a tragedy. We can not blame anyone.

How do we know the driver himself did not use bad judgment, thinking he would make it to the other side. No one knows what happened. May their souls rest in peace, and may the survivor recover and continue on with his life.

Maybe the survivor can shed some light on what really happened.

    • Affection8
      April 19, 2013

When something happens you all always find someone to blame. DFA must hire you “concern” because you seem to know how they should organize their business. this is not the first time players are traveling. so because there is an accident DFA must be blamed. shame on you and all who support that nonsense from you. you do not even have the truth.

    • NONSENSE!
      April 19, 2013

You are calling yourself concerned. Everytime something happens you people blame someone. How can DFA be held accountable. Shut your mouth! Regardless of the situation, its a sad situation and lets pray for the families. If you dont have anything sensible to say, dont post. BIAAASS!! Did you know what the arrangements were like. To much freedom of speech thats the problem and you should be held accountable for the nonsense you posted.

      April 20, 2013

Why dont you say thank god it was only the three of them hat were in the vehicle. God bless the families of those you perished yesterday and my heart goes out to he one in the hospital. God Bless.

      April 20, 2013

And may I ask if you would have put them to slip ouytside the locked airport in thne rain. I do agree that they should have with the team since the night before but what evere happened happened and we cant turn back the hands of time every second we stay pointing fingers is another secong that we fail to undergo development in our lovely paradise. Only in Dominica things like that can happen if it was U.S.A they would hae had a candlelight vigil but instead some of us choose to point fingers and behave like pure fools.

What a sad day for Dominica. Our hearts reach out to the families/loved ones of the dead and injured, to the other members of the national football team, with prayers for faith, strength, courage. Let’s hope, for the souls of the two deceased, that they were turned towards God, that the Father will now take them Home. May we all live with the awareness that we never know how, where, when we will be called, and to be prepared …

        April 19, 2013

My friend,(SMH)I was once like you full of ignorance;but when I started to understand the scriptures I realized that so many have died before their time.ECCLESIASTES 7:17-18 Tells us:Do not be overly wicked, nor be foolish:Why should you die before your time? It is good that you grasp this,And also not remove your hand from the other; For he who fears God will escape them all. And that warning is for both of us. I don’t have any death list but one thing am certain of is this; you are on a death list.but the question is “Where will you spend eternity”?

I would like to understand this situation the nation station has not reported the status of the men left in the ditch and Dominica news online has sympathy. What exactly is going on?
