Efforts continue to restore water to residents served by the Springfield water intake, the only one, according to DOWASCO, to be affected by rain from Tropical Wave Grace on Friday.

DOWASCO’S Public Relations Officer Edward Registe told Dominica News Online (DNO) in an interview on Saturday that heavy silt caused the Springfield water intake to be blocked, however work was underway to unblock it.

“It got heavily silted, which means it got blocked basically,” he said.

He said they are not sure what caused the heavy silt, but a crew had partially unblocked the intake and water would be restored during the course of Saturday.

The Springfield water intake supplies water into communities from Mero to Castle Comfort and is referred to as Water Area one (1).

DNO has learnt that efforts continue to restore water to certain parts of Castle Comfort which were still without water on Saturday.

The country saw heavy rains from late Friday into Saturday due to the passage of the remnants of Tropical Wave-Grace.

The passage of Tropical Storm Erika on August 27, caused several millions of dollars in damage to the company’s water system and made all the water areas vulnerable, according to DOWASCO’s GM Bernard Etinoffe.

How much longer do we have to wait? The supply before Erika was patchy. Out of all utility companies in Dominica, Dowasco is by far the worst performing. Now is the time for consequences. Heads need to roll! We can not go on like this.

Since after d storm Grandbay have not have water in such a large community with DOWASCO themselves admitting that 65 percent of d village dont have water, why is Grandbay not being made a major priority??????

I believe the head of DOWASCO said Giraudel would have its water supply back by the weekend. Clearly that hasn’t happened. I’m sure you are all doing your best but regular and more accurate updates would be appreciated. Many thanks.

I can understand your disappointment and frustration. It is always wise to collect water especially after tropical storm, Erika. Do not take a chance. Even though there are no storms, always keep a supply of water in your home for a few days. Then throw it out, rinse and refill the containers. Do this just in case. It is a tedious task but important. Ensure the water is covered.
Two winters ago there was an ice storm in Toronto. The ice on the trees and wind caused a power outage. My household did not have electricity a few days before Christmas; almost five days. Our lights returned on Christmas Eve afternoon, lucky for us; some people, for longer than that. Some out of Toronto, for a month or more. This was suffering and punishment. It was no easy time. The temperature dropped below zero made it worst.
I had water because I always keep some water. Some people had none.. This was a lesson to be learned. Always have water. Hope you get water soon.
