Young man dies after recent accident

Ahmed Bruney
Ahmed Bruney died following a motor vehicle accident on Dec 7

A young man in his late teens has succumbed, following an accident which he along with 19 others were involved in recently.

One day before the Dec 8 general election, 19 year old Amed Bruney, along with the 19, were travelling en-route to a Dominica Labour Party (DLP) rally which was taking place in Castle Bruce when the vehicle that he was on, overturned.

“On December 7, 2014 about 4:45 pm along the Fond Melle road leading to Castle Bruce there was a very serious accident involving a Mitsubishi Pick-up PD 403 driven by Ridge Blaize of La Plaine,” Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Assistant Superintendent Claude Weekes said.

“The vehicle overturned on the Fond Melle road where 19 people were injured and were transported to the health center. Thirteen out of the nineteen individuals were referred to the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and a 19 year old received serious injuries he was deemed as being critical.”

Six others were also were also serious injured but were in stable condition and four others were discharged.

According to Weekes, many of the injuries sustained were to the head and there were also broken limbs. He said Bruney was placed  in the intensive care unit of the PMH and two days later was air lifted to Martinique where he died on the morning of December 12..

All of the passengers on the vehicle were from Laplaine and they were heading to the Castle Bruce playing field for the Labour Party rally.

Weekes said that police were investigating the matter.

RIP Ahmed! Courage to you parents, family and friends. How 8 wish our medical facilities could deal with a level one trauma that you turned out to be. How I wish that the doctors and nurses had everything that they needed to effectively intervene on your behalf. Perhaps they would not have to put you on a helicopter with a high intra cranial pressure to get you to another country. Just maybe something could have been done To help you at home. HUgs to everyone who are hurt by your untimely departure.

Sorry for the loss of life

A proper hospital with life saving equipment and competent staff would have saved this boys life. HE had a head injury and our hospital has no neurologist neither do they have the equipment to do the scans needed to see exactly what was wrong.

Right is right and wrong is wrong. A proper hospital would have saved this boys life.

    Sad

I agree with you about the neurologist but we actually do have CT scans which show the extent of the injury, Do your research first.

All you need to get all you story straight there was not 19 people on the van.three stepped put. And to people like casse and the others who constantly write nonesenxe I take offense. Typical stupid Dominican always see negative. Leave Amed rest in heavenly peace and leave the others recover. Yes labour will pay for all expenses. Special thanks to our parl rep . Peter Saint Jean. To Justina Charles. To Dr.Darroux. To the health personnel and the ambulance team. Let God be judge and per adventure it was a sacrifice I will never feel sorry for even the obeah man or the witches involved

We need better health care in Dominica. Secondly something need to be done about those loaded vehicles, I am all about car pooling but, I saw people sitting on the Door of a jeep. Two people outside a sky roof. Those things are not safe. I know everybody excited but…

  12. The Facts
    December 14, 2014

I feel sad that he passed-on from his wounds. What makes it sadder yet is, he was young. God called him soon to prepare him for Heaven. He will surely not have to go through whatever befalls people and the earth in the future. God has saved him from that. Let this be a form of consolation.
My deepest sympathy to his family. Be strong in the Lord and be comforted by His Holy Spirit that surrounds you especially in your time grief.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen!
May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!

DNO Admin, it would be nice if you could crop the picture to remove the beer bottle and the “hand gesture.” A pictures is worth a thousand words. We don’t want to send the wrong image. Thanks.

It is so sad that this tragedy occurred. Why was an open vehicle carrying so many persons? Isn’t the law at work on times like this? I saw loaded buses with the passenger door opened, also someone standing on the step outside the closed door of a double-cab truck. So many crazy things happened that day. It is true that we have to take responsibility for ourselves, but sometimes we need the law to straighten up the law-breakers. Maybe the policemen were tired, since there was no off-duty for them during that time. God help us all. My sympathies to the bereaved.

    • The Facts
      December 14, 2014

It was sheer negligence that the bus was overloaded with passengers and the door was opened. These are invitations for a disaster, should there be an accident. This occurred and sadly so. Unfortunately, the police cannot be everywhere at the same time.
On account of this accident, DLP lost a few votes. Thank God they won the election.
I do agree that the road regulations must be stringent. People’s precious lives are at stake. Drivers must always be careful and be on the alert. When are they ever going to learn to drive cautiously, patiently and keep within the speed limit? No exception in Canada. Many people, drivers, passengers and pedestrians die on the roads, most of them through negligence and inconsideration for others.
It is beyond my comprehension that drivers are aware that accidents occur and some very bad ones and fatal ones yet some are still impatient on the road, driving recklessly, exceeding the speed limit, trying to overtake when the coast may not be clear, not knowing that another vehicle may be approaching around the corner and also not allowing pedestrians to cross to be given the right of way when they have the right of way. What else can be done to make drivers even more aware of their obligations on the roads?

I am sad to learn this. My condolences to the family.
People smart up. Why do you have to put your lives at risk for politicians. They are all alive now but this young boy has lost his life. This stupid kind of campaigning needs to stop. What needs to happen is to Educate the people.
you all need to stop putting politicians before God.
Now Peter Pepper ok and this poor boy lost his life.
Give your life to something meaningful, not this nonsense.
J hope they take full responsibility. A perfect example of lawlessness in Dominica. So many people should never be on that vehicle. People are not cargo.

      December 15, 2014

In case you haven’t noticed the only traffic or vehicle concerns that the police respond to are traffic accidents. The enforcement of traffic violations is virtually non-existent if one even exists concerning people riding in the bed of pick up trucks.

We hope not. If politics is stated within the context, then it is OK. If it is out of context and as a means of criticism, then, it is unacceptable. It is important to differentiate between the two.

sad he had to go like that my deepest condolences to the family. another victim of political demonic sacrifice. take note my people please take note. demonic sacrifice to secure a win at the pole. last time after labour party rally in st Joseph remember that carib guy.

    • The Facts
      December 14, 2014

What demonic sacrifice? Are you God? Are you the devil? Accidents happen and will always happen. However, drivers should drive carefully. It has absolutely nothing to do with demonic sacrifice. Your mind is on what it should not be. Cease being judgmental.
As much as you made that inconsiderate statement,    are you aware that some years ago some people from the Grand Bay area were traveling to Roseau by bus to attend a non-Catholic religious crusade. No doubt those people were once Catholics. The bus went down into a precipice. Some people landed on trees. Some died; others had broken this and that. I wonder how many escaped that accident? I doubt none. It was a horrible accident. What would you state for that?
Many accidents occur worldwide. The police investigate them and determine the cause of the accidents. Never will the result of the investigation prove that it is due to what you stated. Be broadminded. Take your mind off evil and evil works.

Priscilla in Pottersville just like young Bruney from Laplaine died tragically however the campaigns went on and on – whereas I sympathize with both families and the extended families friends and well wishers this may be an opportunity to re examine our methods of doing things in this country; the question is – is there a real need for all this hype and total frenzy around election time? The Gov’t in power has been for 10 to 14th years the oppossing party is trying to get in – isn’t there a more civilize way of measuring and assessing who should be the ones deserving to get in rather than all that sewo here and rally there ! could we have done our campaigning through forums such as debates on radio and TV AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS INSTEAD OF LITERALLY DRAGGING THOUSANDS HERE AND THOUSANDS THERE AT THE MERCY OF OUR MERCIFUL GOD. I say so because when I watch the loaded vans and trucks with human lives pass me by I said LORD AND SAVIOR please do not let anything tragic happen to those innocent people. Things like over crowding our vehicles we as drivers and the traffic police would not allow on normal days were being allowed with impunity. I say thank GOD only two souls were lost. But trust me , if it was not for devine intervention and the merciful GOD that I believe in many more could have perished. And for what? that s the big question; for what?

They will give you thumbs down…because you speak the truth and our people are slowly becoming chronic strangers of the truth….

The prime minister only figure that the country outfetted itself after he won the election…if he had to bring in 20 more big names to bazoodeee Dominicans he would….no matter how many died and were nursing injuries. The roads are so narrow and in poor condition, the police should never entertain the idea of motorcade for any of the parties. It just throws the entire country into crisis. Don’t know what would have happened on Sunday if we had a major disaster and had to rush people from the eastern part of the country to Princess Margaret Hospital.

      It’s just crazy…..really crazy…

        December 15, 2014

One of the few sane, thoughtful comments so far. I thought the same thing. What if there were a few emergencies? How would the ambulances get through? I suppose no one thought of that. Like I said last week, God alone was watching Dominicans on that road.
