Call for more youth involvement in agriculture

Ricky Brumant
Ricky Brumant

Director of Agriculture Rickey Brumant has told the young people in Dominica that the survival of the country’s struggling agriculture sector depends on their involvement.

Brumant made these remarks at the start of a national youth policy forum on Wednesday.

He said agriculture is usually deemed a “dirty, back bending” job which is not profitable.

But according to Brumant, agriculture is one of the most profitable businesses in the world.

“There are people who farm and would encourage their children to do it. There are people who are farming professionals and make other careers a part time hobby. People say agriculture is hard working, back bending, but we have learned exactly what agriculture means to us. Agriculture and its succession depends on the youth,” he said.

Brumant said, however, in order to achieve success within the agriculture sector; tools and mechanisms must be put in place by government.

“I believe we must set the stage for youth to take action. We must set the stage for them to participate, for them to work and for them to belong,” he said.

“But according to Brumant, agriculture is one of the most profitable businesses in the world.”(Rickey).

Rickey, that is according to your theory and philosophy!

Do you remember the days of communism; when the former Soviet Union attempted to colonized the world?

Their philosophy, and vision for the world was agriculture now, agriculture tomorrow and forever. None of the followers (countries) of communism indulged into the industrialization of their country, even Cuba based their economy on agriculture until communism failed.

China for more than a hundred years depended on agriculture, their main staples, and export product was rice, thus China with the worlds largest population remained the poorest nation on earth until they shed their ideology of dependency on agriculture, and industrialized their country, today China loans money to the United States, of America, and other nations around the world.

I can understand it if you suggested we maintain agriculture so as to provide us with most of the staples we need for our personal survival; we have to eat, vegetables are an important part of our diet, therefore we have to avoid the importation of what we can produce, but to try to influence people that agriculture is one or the most profitable in the world is nothing more than a lie you hatched in hell!

I live in a country where we see farmers go out of business every day of the week, all due to a lack of profit, form sale of agricultural products; all you have to do is visit places such as Oklahoma and Arkansas which might be the two major agriculture States, where you will find millions of archers of farm land and machinery lying idle, out of business, due to lack of profit.

If you do not believe me, call Emlord Timothy of Wesley, one who farmed all his life, in Dominica and ask him to explain to you what he saw and experienced while he was in Oklahoma, he was astonished to see as many farms that could be bought for pennies on the dollar.

So, when people like you want to talk and impress Dominicans, you need to be very careful with the crap you speak , because plenty of us are ahead of you; we are better informed, and will call you out on the crap you spew.

Here we have people excelling in academics in our country, and rather than you encouraging the industrialization of the country so that when they graduate from collage and Universities they can return home and serve their country, you come talking nonsense; why don’t you go and break your bloody back on some rugged mountain planting agricultural products, and see how you like it.

Even Russia the former head of the soviet agricultural nation has since industrialized, and in the process has become one of the most developed place in the universe.

how are we suppose to get into agriculture when the government only cares about development of tourism? fertilizer is extremely high, feeder roads are impassable and still no markets for produce?

I concur… I have personally began my own vegetable garden and it is very rewarding…

I have only just began and learning.

With youtube and google, I am learning very quickly how ot care for certain plants and the do’s and dont’s

My wish one day is to be completely self reliant on the food I grow.

Is this the guy who came on radio with a list of delinquent farmers just to justify the failure of the agriculture ministry.
I must admit that I was shock to hear that 80% of the farmers who borrow from the bank were in arrears. Now if the stats indicated 15 – 30 % then I would be inclined to scrutinize that 15-30 % of the farmers but for common sense and humility sake 80% says that something is wrong with the system, the administration.
If the system was efficiently managed why did Brumant and Walter allow the situation to get so bad

Go into to agriculture fine, but where is the market? Cause we cant depend on the local one its too small and way to unstable. when the government starts to look for a market (a stable one and not just local) then we young people will take that risk of going to agriculture.

Consultants upon consultants have come down facilitating the policy development process and yet we still aint got it right… So on what National policy strategy (best practices) are we informing CARICOM.

This initiative must start with the schools, dedicate a period for farming during school periods. Also, farming should include animal nurturing and raising.

Yes M. Brumant, you are perfectly right. Agriculture is definitely the way to go in Dominica. This country is in need of a vibrant agriculutural sector and it is sad to see the youth’s lack of interest.
