Dominica receives 240 tonnes of fertilizer from Morocco

Darroux fertilizerThe Government of Dominica has received a shipment of fertilizer from the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco totaling 240 tonnes (ten twenty-foot containers) with a value of about EC$300,000.

The fertilizer will greatly impact the agriculture sector as the availability and cost of inputs, in particular fertilizer, has been a major challenge for farmers over the past year.

The shipment of fertilizer represents a further deepening of cooperation between Dominica and the Kingdom of Morocco.

In December 2013, a five member agricultural technical team from the Kingdom of Morocco held discussions with local agriculture officials for the implementation of a project “Soil Fertility Mapping for Agricultural Development in Dominica and Other Eastern Caribbean Islands”.

This was the first step  towards the reinforcement of scientific and technical partnerships in the agricultural sector between the Kingdom of Morocco and Dominica, implemented through projects in integrated management of irrigation and water resources and fertilizers, for increased productivity and quality of
agricultural products.

The two countries established diplomatic relations in 2010 and since then have enjoyed a fruitful and meaningful friendship.

Dominica and the Kingdom of Morocco signed a Roadmap for Cooperation for the period 2013-2015, in February 2013.

The cooperation agreement focuses on South-South cooperation; food security; energy; governance; environment and climate change; the fight against terrorism, drug and peoples’ trafficking and illegal immigration.

okay people….why not do our own composting producing our 240 tonnes of fertilizer….im sure this would be a viable project idea….which doesn’t cost as much…and we would have no loans to pay back

I would hope that the distribution of these timely fertilizer would go to the necessary agriculture stakeholders since they are the ones who knows the farmers and their needs…cause of that goes to the politicians (parl-reps) the real needy farmers would be undermined…and is supporters that will get to go and sell and rep money from the struggling farmers….Governmnt officials please take note! If u want to see a turn around in the agriculture industry and food security DO THE DISTRIBUTION through organizations and stop play politicks…u guys are killing the industry slowly…

Most commercial fertilizers contain ammonium nitrate. It the source of nitrogen nutrient. First world nations including the US began marketing this component of explosives as chemical fertilizer after WWII. This is why occasionally fertilizer factories blow up and why crude bombs can be made of it by terrorists. It is cheaper than organic fertilizers because it in is a waste buy product and requires less man power to produce. It works great at first but it also weakens plants pushed unnaturally.

forget to add, it also destroys the soil

    March 11, 2014

May we know what the content of this gift is? Is it organic (i.e. derived from natural sources) or is a chemical by-product?
All soils do not require the same inputs. Dominica especially, with it’s rich volcanic soil hardly needs a heavy fertilizer, if the soil is not depleted by herbicides and pesticides. Farmers are paying to weaken their own crops, making them susceptible to blights that have become immune to current pesticides, thus requiring even stronger poisons. What a deal! All of these unnatural treatments are costly—even if given for free.

Shame!!! Shame!!! Shame!!. PM Skerritt has turned the ideals of Mandela and all freedom fighters all over the world.

The Cuban people, the Venezuelans have been crying out loud in support of the peoples in Western Sahara. For more than 50 Years, the Polisario Front have diplomatic missions in those countries. The Sahawaris are facing oppression, inequalities, poverty, occupation.

The Polisario Front have been waging a determined, long struggle against the Kingdom and the Govt. of Morroco.

Yet5, in this 21st. century, Skerritt and his DLP Govt., black brothers in position of Govt. boasts of having diplomatic/foreign relations with that Morocco Govt. For Fertilizer?

For trinkets like the colonial masters use to hand out to those who would dare forget their history and feel ranking big with King?

That new kind of slavery mentality is being manifested day-in, day-out.

The Skerritt Govt. has really brushed aside the struggles of the poor Saharawi African peoples, in favour of establishing links with the king of Morocco.

My people Read about the Polisario Front and the people of Western Sahara’s horrors they are going through for decades against the Morrocan Govt.

No amount of fertilizer given could erase the backward, foolish move to link with such a Govt, with its record of fighting the Black people of that part of Africa. Shame!!!

Excess Nitrogen in fertilizer (NPK – Nitogen Phosphorus and Potassium) is contaminating the ground water in Dominica and ending up in the rivers and sea.

“Excess nitrogen can cause overstimulation of growth of aquatic plants and algae. Excessive growth of these organisms, in turn, can clog water intakes, use up dissolved oxygen as they decompose, and block light to deeper waters. Lake and reservoir eutrophication can occur, which produces unsightly scums of algae on the water surface, can occasionally result in fish kills, and can even “kill” a lake by depriving it of oxygen. The respiration efficiency of fish and aquatic invertebrates can occur, leading to a decrease in animal and plant diversity, and affects our use of the water for fishing, swimming, and boating.
Excess nitrogen in water can harm people

Too much nitrogen, as nitrate, in drinking water can be harmful to young infants or young livestock. Excessive nitrate can result in restriction of oxygen transport in the bloodstream. Infants under the age of 4 months lack the enzyme necessary to correct this condition (“blue baby syndrome”). In parts of Eastern Europe where groundwater is contaminated with 50-100 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of nitrate, pregnant women and children under 1 year of age are supplied with bottled water.”

Has anyone observed the lack of sea life around Dominica lately? In some areas the sea is full of muck all year round.

Has anyone taken a close look at Blenhiem River?

So, for free fertilizer we might be able to grow a few more fruit trees and make a few hundred dollars a year extra. But at what cost? Hmmmm. If we do have to use fertilizer, we might want to do so with the entire eco-system in mind.

    USE WITH CAUTION!

    Thats food for thought.

This economy is doing real good :-D :-D :-D
A stretch out your hand economy, simple but effective :-D :-D

Money from China, Oil and Coffee from Venezuela, Food Ration from Morocco, Money from India and the list goes on.

Dominicans you cannot say the PM is not trying, he is definitely going around and asking. The man wants you to be grateful and vote for him but wait a minute.
Hold on , hold on, so you going to stretch your hand out too with the promise you going to vote for your lovely PM

You know what, election should be every year or so. If it were then there would be jobs like crazy, roads and motorway would be endless and the spending power of Dominicans would be huge.

So I propose that in order to have the politicians giving the power to the people and the people prospering then we should have an election every year. No politician would be able to sleep and give empty promises then :-D :-D :-D :-D
