The Cooperative Division in Collaboration with the Division of Agriculture yesterday April 26, 2011 held a National Symposium in observance of Agricultural Cooperative Day at the Laplaine Agricultural Training Center in La Plaine.
This was a historic event. The objective of the Symposium was to broaden participants’ knowledge of the Agricultural sector in Dominica and to increase participants’ knowledge in the areas of production, marketing and agro processing.
The event brought together over 70 cooperators involve in agriculture and other co-ops from the Believers Multi Purpose Cooperative, Producers of virgin Coconut Oil, in Marigot; Woodford Hill Fisherfolks and Farmers Cooperatives; Stars Multi Purpose Cooperative, Poultry farming and Marketing in Castle Bruce; Dominica Bee Keepers Cooperative, Roseau ; Soul Multi Purpose Cooperative Study Group; Colihaut Cooperative Study Group; Salisbury Fisheries, Agriculture & Tourism Cooperative Study Group, St David’s Agricultural & Marketing Cooperative
Addressing the official function was Miss Mariet Canoville Commissioner of Cooperative and Mrs. Delia Cuffy Weeks who represented the Director of Agriculture. Presentation came from Produce Chemist Ms. Anna Marie Seraphine on agro-processing; Ms. Theodora Anthony Crop Development Officer (DEXIA) on marketing and Agricultural Officer Mrs Delia Cuffy Weeks on agricultural production.
The event began with a Tour of a Toloman Processing Plant, owned and operated by Mr. John Eugene in Delice and then to the Laplaine Agricultural Center where cooperators and other partners in the agricultural sector were encouraged to continue working hard but smart. They were also encouraged to organize themselves into groups including Cooperatives to address the many problems of low production, high cost of production and accessing markets for their produce.
Participants expressed their deepest appreciation for the programme including the knowledge and information received. This is expected to be a yearly event aimed at equipping cooperators of the agricultural sector to be more productive and effective.
