Third class chicken, pork dumped on Dominica says Austrie

Austrie said imported chicken is low grade

Agriculture Minister, Reginald Austrie, has said that chicken and pork imported into Dominica from the United States is third class and is basically being dumped on the island.

Addressing farmers at Market Day With A Difference in Portsmouth on the weekend, he said Dominica can produce its own meat because of an abattoir, which is located in Layou Park.

“I want to say to you that the chicken and the pork that we receive from the United States or from wherever it comes, is third class chicken, it’s second grade chicken, is chicken they are basically dumping on us because they take the best part of the chicken for their self and their people and they send to us $6-million worth of third, second, fourth grade chicken,” he stated.

He said Dominica has the potential for producing its own meats.

“We have an abattoir in this country and you have an opportunity to produce all the chicken we can produce for ourselves,” Austrie, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, told the farmers.

He said the government will improve on the abattoir in order to produce chicken and pork.

“So there is an opportunity for you as small livestock farmers and livestock producers to take advantage of the opportunities being presented by the government, one, that we can feed ourselves and, two, we can take charge of the export market,” Austrie stated.

The meat is cloned meat basically. Im in the US so he is right. Its time countries have their own livestock or refrain from eating fake meat. Food is growing more scarce so many things are beong created in labs. Thanks for letting the country know. Sense is really not common. If you read you will see what he is saying instead of bashing him. If he said fake meat it wouldve been easier to comprehend.

    What an ignorant idiot!

On what has Austrie based his unfounded, and baseless stupid argument? That fool need to know that Chicken and Pork farmers do not simply kill any kind  of chicken and pigs and ship to markets in the United States, and elsewhere!

As far as I know these farms are regular inspected: meat chicken and other poultry products are inspected, and stamped prior to shipment. Whereas he is running his mouth off his commonsense should tell him he is accusing the merchants of Dominica of importing third class or bad meat products into the country when there is no such thing.

They do not separate what is sold in a America and what is exported! That thought could only materialize in the mind of as fool! How many Chicken and Pig farm has Austrie visited in America? Dose Austrie have a meat and poultry inspector in any slaughter house in the United States reporting to him?

When will Dominicans like that guy  stop making fools of themselves?

      October 24, 2018

There is different grades applied to farm products
His comment – although ineloquent – merely states that we are not receiving the highest quality meats
      from national exporters

I’d believe that the Gov’t knows what meats are imported onto our shores to prevent
the catastrophic spreading of germs and illnesses.

We are all calling for development, sitting behind a computer or near a radio waiting for Governments to give us development. Dominica is our own and we need to see her reach where we must. I’m thinking that if we don’t want third-grade product it’s high time we start producing our own products and ACTUALLY SELL IT AT A REASONABLE PRICE THAT THE PEOPLE CAN AFFORD AND NOT WANT TO PURCHASE CHEAP PRODUCTS. It’s like we wait for the Government to invest in EVERYTHING like they are Fairy God Parents and then get angry when one thing is left behind over the other.

    • RandyX
      October 23, 2018

Isn’t the government there to invest in certain things so it’s easier for the citizens. This government does absolutely nothing. All this government and more so it’s PM are interested in to skimm off as much money for their own pockets as possible. People like you just come on here and apologise for these corrupt individuals. Come to think of it, you must be a member of that club.

You people are absolutely wicked and biased. Do you not follow the things that are happening in Dominica? The government have invested in several small businesses to my knowledge. The people must be innovative If government develops the ideas what will happen when the people don’t feel compelled to sustain it? Dominica is not perfect, there are a lot more investments to be made YES. Given that we came from major financial crisis in the late 90’s and have been sent back by storms, we have been getting back up. Think of it like your first home built on a mortgage, your loan was placed under legal action with thousands in debt, you must bring your now old house to a proper state. How do you do so with the limited resources and other external difficulties like the weather?
All you all can talk about is corruption, give me concrete proof and I’ll agree with you. But I can get proof of all the work done by the DLP.
Stop trying to create an impression that nothing is happening.

Gone are the days when folks would raise chickens in their back yards.Just about everyone would be doing it.
And that’s just one, some would have goats, sheep, other forms of birds, rabbits you name it..It’s always a sad thing to be depend on the 1st world nations since they are only transmitting all their forms of various diseases, more so,cancers to you’ll. There is no such thing as good part of the chicken ,the entire thing is messed up,they do not tell you’ll how much havoc that cancer is ripping in the U.S And,
Greed is a major problem in our world today, all of these things come about as a result of greed..Even the cancers when they show up greed continues. The hospitals advertise which one is the best at knocking off the disease, when they know fully well that ,they have no intention of doing that. It’s bringing in a treasure of cash. As the mighty sparrow had a song back then,it said old days were happy happy happy days. How true…

Election time in Dominica: abattoir fully operational ‘soon’, new airport coming ‘soon’, roads and bridges to be fixed ‘soon’, new PMH finished ‘soon’, new Marigot hospital coming ‘soon’, geothermal plant to produce electricity ‘soon’… HOLD ON, didn’t we hear the same propaganda 5 years ago and 5 years before that??? Last I checked roads were being fixed, bridges were being fixed, the new hospital was being built (the process is delayed due to required redesigns Maria shed light on, geothermal was ongoing. Several things were happening that you the opposition and their supporters vehemently criticized. Don’t come on the internet trying to speak like a lot of these things were never happening, that Dominica was stagnant before an impending election. Definition of close sighted much?

        October 23, 2018

Oh yes, the bridge that Skerrit wants t built is being built by Bajans and he would have had a fair share of that contract. No roads have been fixed apart from those that they promised to fix. No new hospital is there yet apart from the one they promised and probably will be finished by 2025. You know there is a big difference between promising things and actually doing them. You have been drinking the red sewo for to long and clearly can’t differentiate no more. As far as Venezuela is concerned, do tell us what you believe as to what might have happened to that 100 million US$ that Venezuela had to write off. Austrie just making noise out of a hole in his head. He says the government will improve on the abattoir, so he is admitting something wrong there. Honestly, I do not trust the standard of our abattoir and it is more expensive. We should import animal feed direct from Canada or the US duty free. That would-be cheaper.
I think Austrie preparing us to pay more for local meat by restricting imports but I not buying that. I will keep my own pig and chickens instead and be more food resilient like we us to be . Not sending my chickens and pig to Austrie’s abattoir either.

  10. October 22, 2018

He said the government will improve on the abattoir in order to produce chicken and pork–News Article

Mr. Austrie Sir, this time I have to stand against you and whoever else is responsible for this production of meat and poultry in Dominica.

I have been reading about the said “abattoir” for quite a while now; I am thinking that today it should be in full force, delivering the home-pastured meats and poultry that our people need, instead of saying that you are paying 6 million dollars to the US for those meats.

Why are you still saying that the “Government will improve” what is taking so long?

You don’t expect that the USA, or whoever you are depending on, to send chicken, pork, etcetera to us, to give you the first production and to keep the second and third for themselves do you?

I never thought that I would be saying this, but for the Life of our people, please stop with the talking and do the working–for crying out loud!

Elizabeth, I know you would much prefer to hang yourself than to accept the fact that these people you are supporting are full of nothing, its all decaying baloney talk, election gimmick!

What abattoir are they going to improve on to produce better what chicken? They claimed to have built an abattoir, the chicken they slaughtered in it were a few chickens they imported from Barbados, after they claimed they would be producing more than a million chicken per month to supply Dominica with poultry!

How many millions of chicken they produced since they slaughtered the less than twelve chicken they imported from Barbados?

Let me tell you something Austrie is simply talking fart to be heard, it is election time; and so it is time to talk some fart about America, and that is why in times of need, America insults you all by giving you actual nothing that can help!

I can see the abbatoir from my house, it is missing a roof and has had no electricity since Maria and the road to it is barely passable so I doubt any farmers will be bringing any livestock there any time soon. The chicken they process there now is also imported and it makes no sense to why chickens coming into the port should be transported on the terrible Warner, Layou Park Road, processed and sent back to Roseau for sale.

The ills inflicted upon ourselves for which we blame others are in the main due to our dishonesty. Each meat package is stamped graded A to D. So the importer buys the cheapest to increase his margin of profit. I endorse the”buy local” philosophy but poor quality chicken imported to the island is the merchants’ responsibility. Importation of meats that can be supplied locally should be banned.

    October 22, 2018

Most of the utterances proffered by Mr. Austrie is quite pertinent. The question is, only after eighteen years of unbroken governance by your political party and on the eve of an election that you have come to realize these things? Dominica, because it is so richly blessed with arable soil, an abundance of water and sunshine, should be the breadbasket of the sub region. This land should be self-sufficient in most agricultural produce with surpluses for export. Fruits, vegetables, ground provisions, pork, beef, mutton, chicken and eggs should have already been locally produced in sufficient quantities to at least satisfy the local consumers.
The Caribbean has become a landfill for American inferior foods, Japanese used vehicles, Chinese counterfeit products and experimental medicines and medical practices.
Skerrit, Austria and their colleagues, are devout propagandists, all idle talk, no substance. If the government knew this to be true, why only now talk about it. ELECTIONS!!

  22. WeNiceMan
    October 22, 2018

I’m all for encouraging the production and consumption of local, but to make loose unsupported allegations just for effect is so irresponsible. Especially from the MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE.

Dominica on its own is an “insignificant” market as far as US exports are concerned, but such allegations usually don’t sit well with the exporting country. Especially when agriculture exports represents an important sector of their economy. And in the case of the US it is.

Bt again Austrie has always been known for his loose many times vile lagon style utterances.

  23. Paul Green
    October 22, 2018

When a government minister, whether he is acting Prime Minister or Prime Minister himself, makes a statement to the effect that the chicken and pork imported into Dominica by the private sector is the “last cacarat” chicken which has been in storage for a year or more, it begs the question as to how efficient the Ministry of Agriculture is. It means that the Government is complicit in allowing 2nd grade, 3rd grade and even 4th grade chicken. Most people may not be aware that a phytosanitary certificate is required from the exporter to satisfy the requirement of the import regulations with respect to ALL meats, including chicken and pork.
If the Prime Minister and the acting Prime Minister are aware that the chicken and meats we import are the “last cacarat” products which are more than a year old, and they still allow the importation, something is radically wrong with that picture.

    • Sandra
      October 22, 2018

      Mr. Green
The Government Ministers must be very careful what they say, these utterances can damage the private sector businesses and the DAIC must step in here in defense of the Private sector. Mr. Austrie is damn rude and out of place. He has piggy back off the labour party to make a life for himself, why is he not leaving the good time in the party to go open his Private Abattoir to understand what hard work is about. Go fend for yourself Sir by working hard in Dominica soil not dressing up and playing important by using tax payers money and stop your useless lashing out at everyone just to look good and score points you disgust me. Or is Austrie making a pitch for the local abattoir??What do the importing agents have to say?? KFC??

I like the part where you said “How does Austrie know that’s it’s low grade,if is by looking at it”?
Well Austrie is not a smart guy by any stretch of the imagination. So I would not be surprised, that’s what he did!

What a load of nonsense. Is this guy familiar with the regulations that are in place for meat processing plants in the United States and Canada when he talks about third grade meat?

Why would the US have meat processing regulations for local consumption that differ from those that are for export? Except for the fact that US meat farmers are allowed to use growth hormones and antibiotics in their animals, I would trust US meat any day over Dominican meat as far as processing is concerned.

Now for the statement he made about the Americans taking the best part of the meat and exporting the third grade products to Dominica, that again is total BS. They ship what you order. If you order back and neck, don’t expect to get chicken breast. If you order breasts, that is what they will ship.

    What a buffoon!!

You have heart saying that as someone in government who can effect change? If you know that’s what we getting then something should be done to stop the import of low grade chicken as well!

Nerd, that is the point. The phytosanitary certificates certify that the poultry, poultry products or poultry food products specified come from birds that were officially given an antemortem and postmortem inspection and passed in accordance with applicable laws and regulations of the United States Departmenr of Agriculture and are wholesome and fit for human consumption. If the Prime Minister and acting Prime Minister can certify that the we import the last cacarat chicken which is a year or more old, then they should immediately stop the importation of poultry and poultry products and advise the United States Department of AQgriculture accordingly.
