UPDATE: Pointe Round bridge compromised

Pointe Round Bailey bridge affected by recent rains. Photo credit: Emo News

Dominica News Online (DNO) has learned that equipment and personnel have been sent to Point Round to repair damage done to the Bailey bridge at Pointe Round, Portsmouth as a result of recent heavy rainfall in the area.

Motorists have been advised that currently, motor vehicles cannot access the bridge and that they should use the Pont Cassé – Melville Hall road when travelling to and from that part of the island.

The Bailey bridge at Pointe Round was the first to be installed on the island following the widespread damage caused by Tropical Storm Erika in 2015.

Hello and good morning my people. Our Government need to establish a Bureau of Design and Construction which would be responsible to design the bridges and roads. Then they should have a biding process fron builders to submit bids to build the bridges and roads. In that way we would have better roads and bridges being build in a timely manner. The rivers in Dominica isn’t to wide where we can’t have bridges scale the river without any footing in the river. Come on my people we have smart people who can resolve those problems. This is old stuff we discuss every other year so let’s please solve those problems .

There is a perfectly strong cast concrete bridge over that Pointe Ronde River just about 100 yards away in the bush which could be used. It is like the one at Macoucherie dating from the 1920s standing firm having survived David, Erika and Maria. It could be connected to the main road by some excavation…. But few people seem to know of its existence.

You see, that is what the Skerrit regime would like to sell you as Progress and Climate Resilience. These guys are just full of BS and the citizens of DA need to show them the door. We cannot go on like this!!!

I think I have an answer. It rained again. Skerrit made it rain to get political attention. Good job. So if UWP was the government it would not rain. You know you have to be in government to make it rain.

Mr. Skerrit took a helicopter tour of Dominica just after Maria’s destruction of the island. When he flew over Margot he threw out US $5.00 ( all US $1 notes) and said to the pilot, “That is to make 5 people happy.”
When he flew over Grand Bay, he threw out US $50.00 and said,” That is to make 50 people happy.”
He then flew over Vieille Case he threw out US $200.00 and repeated, “That is to make 200 people happy.”
The pilot then turned to the PM and said, “Mr. Skerrit, why don’t you throw uself out the helicopter and make everybody happy?”

    They following are also compromised:
    Roads are a death trap
Buildings in some areas massive problem
Health system is in a big mess
Roseau looks like a big car park for used vehicles
    Unemployment at breaking point
Youths are lacking guidance n their future is dark
Cost of living after Maria is nasty due to the uncontrolled mad prices for cheap goods
    Morality is compromised
    Ethical codes compromised
The whole climate resistance agenda looks like big talk
Integrity compromised because Maria assistance is political to the core
The country’s electorate is compromise because they can’t see the government fooling them with promises after Maria just to win the next election.
Let’s make Dominica great again. Get rid of this failed government… Before everything falls apart

Safety and security should be the top priority of all governments. In Dominica, this is not the case. Neglect and dereliction of duty by the present administration is the order of the day. Roads are left unrecognizable, some bridges are in such a sorry state of disrepair that they have become death traps. Yet Skerrit, his henchmen and foot soldiers, speak of the country’s ‘development’ in utopian language. The quality of life of the people is not much of their concern, winning the upcoming polls is their top and only priority.
For the decrepit roads and crumbling bridges-Vote for better!
For the highest youth unemployment in the OECS- Vote for a change!
For the blatant and naked corruption- Vote them out!
For the starvation wages of civil and public servants- Vote for a Top Up!
For the riddance of one of the world’s most selfish and uncaring governments- Vote for a blessed tomorrow!

Is this the bridge to Portsmouth? If so, I’m not surprised. The bridge never seemed safe and every time I pass on it I fear for my life because I hear it creaking and cracking every time a vehicle drives over it. Us Dominicans need to come together and demand answers from our government. These bypasses have been here for 3 years. So much relief money received since Erika and Maria. Minister of Tourism just claimed to spend 60M on bloody what? Everyday, before the boat even arrives, they closing down bayfront but those tourists don’t even leave the boat. All that money and our bridges are still not fixed. We need to demand answers, people.

I don’t have any hope for Dominica. Our government is incompetent and Dominicans are so eager to get them out they don’t realize that the idiots in the opposing party are worse than the fools in power. We don’t have any good option. UWP are full of idiots and the DLP is corrupt.

Bailey bridges are for emergency instances, and therefore temporary ,
how long is temporary in Dominican language ?
How many steps backwards this country is taking, when they take one forward ?
    I’m only asking .

  14. November 7, 2018

A year ago the Canefield cliff collapsed twice over. The chances are that it will do so again given heavy rain, and especially so if rainfall is coupled with an earth tremor. When that happens lives may be lost and Roseau will be cut off from the north for vehicular traffic,

We were assured that an alternative route via Morne Daniel was being pursued as a matter of urgency.

Is it no longer deemed urgent?

So what do you all expect? This nature island after all, so roll up pants, put your grip on your head and cross the rivers as my grandmother did in the first half of the 20th. century. Besides, this is nature island after all. To desecrate the island with asphalt roads and steel and concrete bridges is a crime to mother nature. Resiliency be damned.

    • November 8, 2018

I get where your coming from. But we don’t necessarily have to wade across rivers to regain our “Nature Island” identity. Your great grandparents built some of our earliest bridges out of materials at hand and with no mechanical aid. Those bridges survive to this day.

We do however have to reaccess our lifestyle so as to live in closer harmony with nature. Am I the only one left that twice daily bathes in the river?

Why have all Bailey bridges not been replaced by stronger more reliable bridges? After recent rainfall this was an accident waiting to happen.

I am really not sure how Dominicans making it living on promises. I just think that is really foolish…dumb or Some voodoo act placed wool over their eyes. Its your party yes, but when work has to be done, it has to be done. Since Ericka a bridge fall, no man. and Passports selling like joke, where the money. plywood and galvanise cannot cut it, not building doors with one door in pointmichel. Come on PM get out of this bubble of Fantasy land and hit the tires to the road man.. It has been long enough 18 years….well I am even givign you grace…..so lets say labour in ….grace…give and take….15 year max 18. All I see is a pocket full progressing, if you in the in circles, migration, closure of businesss, promises, from Minister to President, PM get grander, he has a family, GREAT, and the wife replace barbie, …look out for outfits. Then I also see increase in drugs use by youth, hence increase paros, elderly getting a little more pitance, great

I went down point round and its a real calamity down there. No vehicular access for a while. Three bridges damaged on west coast only link connecting the two main towns and after three long years not even one bridge Skerrit could build and he there now talking his foolishness about building international airport.

Are Dominicans going to wait till Dominica falls to understand that something is not right with the managament in this country?

2015-2018 millions collected in CBI, several Hotels in progress but not one bridge rehabilitate on the west coast. This is what is called a WTF! moment in America..

  27. SN
    November 7, 2018

3 years later, a destroyed bridge does not have a permanent replacement, yet we use CBI money to fund private investments (hotels, etc.) instead of funding infrastructure improvements. No wonder Ross University left because on any given day their students would be unable to get to Roseau or back to Portsmouth if the bridge got compromised. Yet again, it took a long time to replace the York Valley bridge, an important bridge to farmers in the area.

Oh dear oh dear this country is crumbling, there was also a landslide last night which blocked the road to Layou Park, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was due to the work they’ve started with a digger and a couple of Dominica strong trucks. There are no engineers on site and they just seem to be digging away at the hillside with no plan in place.

No wonder Ross ran from Dominica. We were fedup with the lies of Skerrit ,year in year out. This bridge in particular is about 1 mile north of Ross University and PM Skerrit promise that Dominica got an early Christmas gift from China in November 2015. Three years later is either Santa did not deliver his cookies or, they built the bridge somewhere in the sky. It hurts to see such a beautiful country with such lovely people, keep taking that much shit from their government. It’s time for you guys to try another government and if they fail you like Skerrit, vote them out too until you get a government that’s willing to work in the best interest of the people of Dominica. You guys just need to teach your politicians a lesson. Right now they treating you all like fools and helpless people they can abuse anytime they want.

      November 7, 2018

There was no mention as to the exact time the bridges would be built. It simple stated when work will commence The article says ” The project will see the replacement of destroyed bridges as Macoucherie, Batali and Point Ronde; reconstruction of walls and railings for the bridge crossing at Coulibistrie; rehabilitation of culver crossings and drainage infrastructure at Mero, Macoucherie, Salisbury, Batali, Coulibistrie and Picard and some slope civilization.

There has been retaining walls built amongst other things, , so just because the baily bridge isn’t built yet doesn’t mean the govt is telling lies, i am no supporter of PM Skerrit but we have to be fair. Say what is done and what is not but don’t write like nothing has been done. Also, currently the Chinese are working on building back the Batali bridge. I see them there working even at nights.

Look at the state of Dominica’s highway? This is a clear demonstration of if Roosevelt Skerrit really cares about Dominica as he has been saying. Imagine if there is a real emergency between Picard and Portsmouth and someone with life threatening injuries or life threatening health concerns and ambulance cannot go through. The tourist season is opened right? My God imagine tourists involved in an accident coming from Portsmouth and they have to drive them through Marigot and as they approach Marigot condition worsens and these people cant go to a hospital because Skerrit closed down the hospital? Do you all get a glimpse of the mess Dominica is in? I hope the Diaspora people are seeing

This was posted under Mr. Linton’s Independence message. to the writer I say; I hope you are still in DA so you can see, and I do hope that you are returning today so you can be affected on your way to the airport. Didn’t I hear all those Skerrit apologist all during independence telling us about all the advances made since Maria. Ok now let’s look at the facts: this Bailey bridge has been put in place shortly after Erika. All that time it has never been 100% secure and safe and now it finally caved in. People of DA this is exactly what these Skerrit apologists try and sell you as ‘progress’. Skerrit and his ministers are corrupt and incompetent and they are a liability to our beautiful country. There is no future for any of you as long as this regime is in power. Let’s show them the door at the next election!

    November 7, 2018

God works in mysterious ways you know. When Skerrit addressed the visiting Dominicans residing in the Diaspora, he encouraged them to drive around the country to see the amount of concrete work development that’s going on. Well I hope some did not listen to him and drive to Portsmouth and have to take the ferry to Guadeloupe today. Many of these visiting Domininicans are in Ross University apartments and will see Skerrit’s development because on the west coast they will see 3 bridges that we’re destroyed by Erika in 2015 and not one has been repaired and, Maria took the NB Layou bridge. So see the reality people.

So DNO, it’s now more than 3 years ( 3 YEARS done pass already) since these west coast bridges were damaged by Tropical Storm Erica and up to now, not one – NOT EVEN ONE of them can be repaired. 8-O 8-O 8-O 8-O

What really is wrong with Dominicans boy?

And people just there – especially the Labour sheeple of the north. Do these people have some sort of sadistic fetish for receiving repetitious abuse from the hands of the Labour party?

  47. Open-Mind

At least one of the bridges along the E.O Leblanc highway should have been constructed before the new one in Roseau. There were 4 alternative routes to the town after Erika. Everytime it rains heavily we have to wonder if the bailey bridge will stand.

I have to agree with you 100%. We too focused on roseau bridges while so many TEMPORARY bridges still stand all over the country. they are called temporary for a reason. Lets not wait for when next hurricane season hit for us to fix this. Look what we already getting :(
