Armed robbery victim says he will not be intimidated

Bellot says he will not be intimidated
Bellot, who was shot in both legs, described the robbers as senseless and a waste of time

Nyika Bellot from Bath Estate who has said that he was shot by three armed masked gun men in a robbery calls the actions of the men “senseless” and says he will “not be intimidated.”

According to information received by the police, about 10:20 pm on August 22nd, three individuals wearing masks, two of whom were carrying firearms, entered the Sun Night Grocery Shop, situated at 197 Sisserou Lane in Bath Estate and robbed Nyika Bellot, who was then shot in both of his legs.

Bellot was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) where he was examined by a medical doctor and is now a patient.

“It was Monday night a little about after 10, I had just changed shift about 20 minutes. Was dealing with two customers and in came masked men and asked me to pass over the money and I ask them if they serious they said yes. I resisted but to show that they were serious they started to burst shots and things started to get out of hand,” he said.

According to him, he tried his best to give a little resistance but with a 12 gauge pointing in his face “you can only resist so much”.

“If they left with anything it was minimal.  When they left I came from behind the counter saw them on the road and wanted to get a better view of them. Then one just turned around pointed the gun at me and shot me in the foot,” Bellot said.

He continued, “You working hard for your survival and to have people coming and stealing from you. I am not intimidated…guns can’t frighten me. Guns are bursting in my streets regularly. I am not frightened by them. I don’t know who they are because they were masked. You can’t guess; you have to get it right. I am angry since I am not in gang. I have not done anyone anything…I just don’t get their point. What message they were trying to pass for shooting me after they left. They are senseless and waste of time.”

He questioned the reasons for him being shot. “What are the reasons for shooting me? By the grace of God I am getting along well, praise God none of my bones were broken and all ligaments are in tack. But I will surely be seeking further medical attention out of Dominica. The doctors have done a great job so far,” he said.

Police are continuing investigations into the matter.

Hello and good evening my people. First I want to wish Mr Bellot a speedy and complete recovery but as one who has twenty four years of law enforcement experience in NYC am compelled to offer him some advise. I have always advise citizens and a specially merchants that if they are being robbed and the perpetrator is armed its in there best interest to give the perpetrators what they requested. They most likely will request money from the cash register because if you resist they will hurt you and your life is more important than the money. Merchants must also put cameras inside and outside of their business this serves as a deterrent because perpetrators don’t want to be seen much less photograph. Now let’s not turn this into a political issue because am certain that no political party would condone such vicious attack on our citizens.

They need a couple mobile police stations in Bath Estate and pairs of policemen patrolling. they also need to follow up on gun shots obviously this is a serious problem. Why is the Police in Dominica allowing the society to fall into chaos… they current tactics are lackadaisical at best. Either the police men incentive or the youth need to be educated and see a way besides gangs. too much karwat and stupid people in DA these days!!!

I feel so sad for you sir. You did not deserve this attack. Many are the affliction of the righteous, but the Lord delivers from them all. Please don’t get bitter and don’t lose faith in humanity. For in due season you will understand the wisdom in the confusion. My prayers are with you for total healing and a renewed heart.

We need regular police patrols and spontaneous neighborhood sweeps. Clear up the blocks, search and detain anyone suspicious. Most of them make it super obvious that they are involved in illegal activity. STOP TOLERATING IDLENESS, LOITERING AND OBVIOUS GANG ACTIVITY. CC surveillance should be obligatory in big business places especially those opening late. At any rate the owners should see this as a worthwhile investment to safeguard their businesses and it doesn’t cost all that much to set up when compared with the potential loss that can be suffered from a robbery. Words and determination and strong will are very important, but pragmatic tangible solutions are also needed.

I did not want to say anything about that because those criminals will read the comments. However, we are informed, do not resist criminals. Your life is precious. They came to steal and they will kill, if obstructed.
The consolation is, one day criminals will reap what they sow. What goes around comes around in time and two-fold.
God knows, sees and hears all things. They will not escape.
I wish the young man well. God be with him and heal him.

    • August 27, 2016

That is the standard operating procedure when you are faced with an armed robbery like in this case:

      Say as little as possible.
Do not make eye contact with the robbers.
Give them what they came for, cash, groceries whatever.
Do everthing as quickly as possible to get the robbers to leave quickly.
Report the robbery as soon as you can.

Brother, I am sorry for your ordeal but you did not follow any of these common sense rules when faced with an armed robbery. It could have been worse is all I will say. Hope you recover quickly.

Speedy Recovery my boy. Things are getting out of hand in Dominica right now … Alot of people in Dominca want to live their life on the innocent people account , feel like they can take whatever they want whenever they feel like it. Soon the government should introduce “Concealed carry on” because the street’s not safe for those who fight to make a daily bread. The cops never do a good job in investigation unless drugs is not involved or chasing people for vehicle registration . Not crying down the government in anyway just feel that the police need to focus on more important stuff

I’m sorry about what happened to you young man, this is unfortunate. I suppose a great lesson has been learnt, all those who are aware of th these young people holding guns and behaving arbitrarily by shooting bullets indiscriminately need to stop covering up these criminals. In this island people are not standing up against these criminals but instead making them feel comfortable. Now you have a taste of the bullets, hope you’ll take a stance and let your voice be heard against these gun activities!!!

We pray that you and all others who have been subjected to that type of criminal behavior will be encouraged.

  26. Tell the Facts
    August 25, 2016

Oh my! Dominica has some awful criminals. Their hearts are stones/rocks; real bad eggs. Their day is coming.
This is why, if caught, they should not be granted bail. I reiterate it may be those who are out on bail who could have done that. I would not be surprised if this is found true. Police, examine your records and follow-up on this..
As for guns going off in that area, this is another area the police should constantly patrol and to catch those gun-totters.
Be strong young man. Thank God as you said. He is with you and will see you through. As my dear mother always said, “God is good!”
Hope some sort of fundraising will be conducted for him to go abroad for further treatment as soon as it is possible.
Fellow D/cans, whenever you pray and hopefully consistently which we must, please pray for him (I will); also for your protection and safety. Pray also that God will eradicate this criminal scourge in D/ca and for them to be caught.

As heard on US Global Catholic Radio – EWTN, “When you pray, do not tell God to do them anything or you want him to do something to them. God knows what to do and what He will do, in his time.” Simply pray your intentions as previously mentioned.
It would be a nice gesture if he is sent some get well cards, to cheer him. If possible, a bouquet of flowers. This will indicate to him that D/can residents do care and wish him well. This could be a healing process.
God bless him and heal him.
May God eradicate crimes from our beautiful island and free it from this terrible scourge which did not occur/exist in those days.

This young man is lucky that he was shot in his legs because it could have been fatal …As he mentioned that guns are being fired around his area quite often ;it is the same next to the dumper in hagley road which is closer to the river side ;there are only 2 men involved, one bus dr and surely this might be taking place all around the country..long ago only responsible men had guns but they were used for hunting…I have never heard of any accidents nor crime by the use of guns but now the majority of the people who own guns are criminals..with evil intentions. The gov’t must punish people who are doing crimes with guns severely in order to deter criminals ;because if not Dominica will become worse than Trinidad which counts 299 murders for the year only ,the gov’t must punish severely gun owners ,also there is no need for young men to own guns if they do not have any wealth to protect from criminals ;as a matter of fact these lazy criminals use guns against had working people…

  32. \”I just don’t get their point. What message they were trying to pass for shooting me after they left. They are senseless and waste of time.” –News Article

It is unfortunate that those kinds of useless and lazy individuals, that those who should be on the mark in seeing that our country\’s economy continues on the rise, are using as examples to cry down their own homeland–blaming it on Government.

See there is a young man at work to make a lving for himself; and there comes 3 sluggards, senselessly using guns at him, disabling his ability to do his work and adding an extra cost for his medical treatment.

Nothing is said against these lazy and useless individuals–but thery are the biggest problem from the beginning. The poverty that some are crying about in Dominica is the product laziness

I do not understand why those who continue to speak darkness and gloom against their own homeland cannot see where the flaws began.
