When director and writer Walter Rodriquez approached Catherine Fingal, a native of Bataca in the Kalinago Territory and now living in the United States, with a script for a movie, she was captivated by the first line and immediately jumped aboard the project.
The movie turned out to be an independent featured film called ‘Decalogue – 1 City, 5 stories, 10 commandments.’ It tells the story of the choices people make and commandments broken in order to survive. The movie is brutally honest and candidly looks into the lives of the each of the characters.
As Producer of the film, Catherine had a major role to play in making the movie a reality. “Working on a movie set for me is a dream come true, quite literally too!” she told Dominica News Online. “Any image, setting, environment, lighting, story, music that you can imagine- you can create for the screen!”
She described her experience in working with the crew members, which included another Dominican Miguel Grell, as ‘awesome.’ “We all work together as a team,” Catherine stated. “Each crew member wears many hats during the production. Working and playing with so many talented, creative, sensitive and beautiful artists,cast and crew is magical and the biggest payoff.”
However it was not all an easy road. “Challenges come along at every step of the way, but its amazing how these challenges usually turn into incredible creative opportunities,” she said.
Decalogue will be completed this month and will premiere shortly aftwards but Catherine is already looking to the future. “For the next film, we’re currently considering a few scripts as well as a documentary in Dominica,” she said.
