The news reaching DNO is that a plane has encountered some difficulty while landing at the Douglas-Charles airport in Melville Hall.

The information is that the plane’s landing gear may have collapsed.

A source at the airport told DNO that there were no severe injuries. However. one person is reported to have received a cut above one of his eyes and some others are complaining of chest pains.

DNO was also informed that the plane, a Sky Airline aircraft, was coming from Santo Dominigo.

We understand that the airport has since officially been  closed.

DNO will follow this story and bring you more information as it becomes available.

In the event that passengers and crew were hurt, where would they be taken to as there is NO marigot hospital. Portsmouth wouldnt be suitable. You all are lucky as a government. then it would have been blamed on Maria.

Yes I am happy no one got hurt in yesterday’s crash
I am a visitor to Dominica who has been coming for 15 years
We love Dominica and have made many friends

I drove from Roseau to the airport on the dark st 425 am this morning to find out that the airport was closed and they were still waiting for investigators to come from Antigua and no one knew when they were arriving at the airport

How about an email from Liatt to let tree lees know their flight was cancelled and keep us updated on the situation

The Loatt representative finally met us st the gate and told us they did not know what was happening or what to do

As of know the airport web site still shows flights departing and arriving even though the airport is closed
Today with social media it would have been easy to keep everyone updated

SMH. No customer service. The reps here need to contact head office to infomr them of the situation and determine how to deal with the passengers. Put out a PSA so people dont waste their times. Inform the Taxi Associations and DHTA. That is how customer service begins. sorry you had to go through that.

Welcome to Dominica. A country ruined in less than 20 years by a rogue PM and most people allowed him to stay because they are lazy, greedy and without morals.

We need an investigation not just to know the cause of the crash but to know for sure that:
    1. The plane was legally licensed to transport passengers to and from Dominica 2.The plane has a valid insurance
    3. The plane is not owned in part or in whole by Roosevelt Skerrit
    4. The plane only had 30 passengers and nothing else whether drugs, weapons or some wanted criminals around the world.

Is this really how we are in Dominica. We have a government waisting money giving handouts for vote in excess of 10 million dollars in 2 months and that same government did not see it fit to use that money to build a hospital at Marigot? The govt. have the rum shops smiling while travellers have to be thinking of what if. Thank God there were you major injuries on that flight. Dominicans we all have to wake up and let our politicians know we are Dominicans before we are a party supporter and will vote for Dominica and Dominicans instead of a party. How long are we going to let one man drag Dominica and Dominicans to the gutter. If our PM think he is harming Lennox Linton, he should think again. He is actually harming Dominicans and future visitors.
Wake up Dominicans, wake up and lets make the change. Lets make sure we do not have another political party taking us for a pappy show. Let us all think back at how Dominica use to be when a man could say “I WORKED FOR WHAT I HAVE

where is the money they have given to Skerret for Dominica? Building homes for people is one thing, giving it away free of charge no rent paid is another thing. Buying the peoples votes with monies that is intended for, say a hospital in Marigot, roads, an international airport you can go on plus what they skim of the top money down the drain and still no land lines, somebody making money.

“SKY” painted in RED on the plane. Is that a warning to us? A direct flight from Santo Domingo to Dominica loaded with Haitians. Dominicans and serious visitors can hardly get a direct flight from Barbados or Antigua, St Lucia to Da without having to takeI an Algebra test but somehow there is a schedule direct flight from the DR to Da carrying illegal Haitians and Spanish, that do not have a job or apartment waiting on them here at a time when healthcare here is almost in a national crisis. I wonder if there is a connection between the “RED SKY” flight and the Red “Dominica Strong” trucks? The authorities are silent as locals can’t get a job on island. I have nothing about Haitians but if they are allowed to come in droves I have to ask myself if it is a well calculated move to change the election results. Haiti is politically messed up and it would be a disgrace to use them to finish destroy Da. We almost had RED Haitian blood yesterday and that should serve as a wake up call

    • April 9, 2019

Please Dominicans ,check on those Hatians and Spanish.
they may be coming to vote illegally.

The aviation authority responsible for regulating the airport should threaten the close the marigot airport since a proper functioning health facility is unavailable in close proximity. This is tantamount to not having fire appliances readily available at the airport.
This is not about the people of Marigot but every visitor and resident that fly in and out of that airport. Nothing is not too good for Marigot my people. All our lives matter.

    We’ve lost our way.
We have decided to treat our fellow Dominicans like the enemy because of politics. We watch and do nothing, and even find pleasure when our brothers and sisters who choose to demonstrate the courage to stand up for what they believe in get prosecuted. When did Marigot and Wesley become a different country? When did they fall off the face of Dominica? You may not see it now, but one day, the rest of Dominica that has turn a blind eye to the punishment of the people of Marigot by a government that is failing the country, will wake up and realize that when one Dominican is punished, we all will feel it. Some of the postings here and on other Social Media sites make me feel ashamed of my homeland.. This is sad indeed. Stop sitting by while your brothers and sisters are prosecuted for what they believe in. Stand up and chant down wrong doings whenever and wherever it happens.. We did it before; we can do it again!!

I’m happy that there were no deaths nor life-threatening injuries. This is truly an eye opener. The hospital at Margot must be given urgent attention. This must not be done for only airline passengers in an event of a mishap at the airport but for the many elderly persons with non-communicable diseases, diabetes and hypertension. Do you know that these two diseases are the biggest killers in our society? These people are at great risk with the shabby healthcare that is presently provided by the government. The government’s emphasis should be on national security, healthcare and revitalization of the economy at this juncture in time. They rather to focus on demonizing their opponents and making fantastic promises to get re-elected. The prevailing economic and health conditions in the country are very troubling.

But people, in light of the closure of the Marigot hospital, WHAT IF it was a plane load of Dominicans coming down to vote and there were many that got hurt? Is that what we coming to vote for? What if it was a rainy day and the tarmac was wet? Since a plane load of our young men landed minutes before the crash, WHAT IF it was a plane load of our young men? WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF?

Not having a well equipped level 3 trauma health care facility near any airport is against international aviation rules and regulations. So I hope this will cause the Govt to get off their lazy hands and build a facility starting this month.
Isn’t it ironic that it was just a few days ago that Skerro and family landed in that same airport?
It was just last week that Mr. Linton made an urgent plea to the Govt to bring the Medical boat to Marigot! This is serious!
I hope the police drop the charges against Soul-Puss.

With the recent protest in Marigot culminating in the arrest of a calypsonian, this aircraft incident represents the irony which seems to subscribe to the rational for the protests, but also a powerful indicator of something to ponder: that a man, for political reasons can represent himself as Jesus, the Son of God!? It is has always been disconcerting to me, that a people of a country could accept such foolishness.
Do Dominicans not understand how God responded to “THE PEOPLE” after Aaron built the idol – which God deliberately forbade- in the absent of Moses who had gone up Mt Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments? Is it surprising that in the recent past, God has shown Dominica who He is, and how He will deal with a country that accept such blasphemous behavior about His son?

I believe that He has granted a favor and allowed none of the FOREIGN nationals to be seriously injured, however, while the country itself is hurting.

The mystery of how God does His work

  15. The Evangelist?
    April 8, 2019

Growing up as a young man at the People’s Pentecostal Church I heard a lot of preaching about how God answers prayers and How to know when it is God. This passage was always used as reference
“12And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face… 1 kings 19:12:25.
What we saw today is definitely a demonstration of that “Still small voice”. Well all of last week we had nurses protesting in Roseau followed by people of the North East doing the same at Marigot and the plight of nurses working in poor health conditions and that of the Marigot Hospital that served the Airport and the whole of Dominica which Skerrit closed 5 years ago and people were concerned about in case of a plane crash. In fact Soul Puss was arrested for being one of the leaders. Today, it was a very close call that could have been catastrophic. Was that the still small voice?

Do not use this unfortunate accident as bait to get on the PM. Eddison James was in power and never saw it fit to build a hospital in his constituency. So, why beat on the PM when he is doing his best with all what is available at the moment. Linton, will never be PM nor will UWP ever get in power. Do not give yourselves high blood pressure, boom-boom flies. De man not mature enough to be PM. He needs to pay Pinard first what he owes him and not with CBI money.

Look at castle Bruce who built that school. Who gave the people of the south east the road through the mountains. Who built the Michael Douglas Bvld in Portsmouth. Who introduced universal education with free text books in Dominica. I will tell you one thing had the UWP been in power Dominica would have better off. April 9, 2019

Sometimes you all sound so foolish it is laughable. A man who has been out of office for over 20 years cannot be blamed for this ‘commess’ that is happening. Eddison James left a hospital; it was the incoming administration’s job to upgrade the hospital where necessary and protect it. Stop making Roosevelt Skerrit look like a saint because he is far from it. He is victimizing the people of Marigot. He is not going to build the hospital. I can guarantee that. Yesterday’s event should be an eye opener to all, he included. Let’s see if he does something. What Skerrit fails to understand is that it is not Marigot people alone that travels via plane, bus or personal transportation. Unless it does not hit close to home he will not understand the urgency for a hospital. SMH

      April 9, 2019

Man, forget about Edison James, that is nearly 20 years ago he was head of government. This is actual, under Roosevelt Skerrit. If anything was wrong under Edison James Roosevelt Skerrit has had plenty of time to fix it. But has he, you answer the question. Yes we had Erica and Maria but we also had plenty help and money from CBI, so keeping blaming those two storms is wearing thin.

      • April 9, 2019

The labour party inherited an empty treasury after the UWP under Eddison James and Julie Timothy was booted out. Do you forget? Which administration built out the Windsor Park, built new police stations, built out the Grammar school, made the road to Portsmouth from Roseau a highway called I-95? and more. Did you forget, malonet.

Skyhigh Air is a small airline, registered in the Dominican Republic with only five aircraft. The one that suffered a broken off undercariage today is a 30 seat, 24 years old British built Jetstream 41, one of two in the Skyhigh fleet. This loss represent over 20% of the airline’s total capacity of 145 Seats. I do not think they can maintain their schedule under these circumstances. We have no facilities in Dominica to repair this aircraft to certifiable flying condition and I suspect it will either be written off or dismantled for transport to a destination where such a repair is feasable if the insurers deem it wortwile.

Belly up landing suggests the possibility of landing gear not lowered during final landing checks.

    • Brian Gibbs
      April 8, 2019

But in one photo I see what looks like a main landing gear assembly. If the gear was up like you suggest, how was the gear able to come out and get torn off?

    • Malatete
      April 9, 2019

Looking at the angle the aircraft veered off the runway to the right, the pronounced damage to left hand propeller (bent tips), more so than the right one, and damaged/missing engine cowling on the same side would suggest a collapse- and loss of the landing gear on that same side.
Of course, this is purely a personal, observation at this time and we must wait for the findings of an official to establish the factual cause(s) for this accident.

  21. Gagot
    April 8, 2019

What everyone does not know is that that aircraft already had technical problems in Santo Domingo for months and they let the plane fly with technical faults should be investigated by the aeronautical authorities

    Marigot needs a hospital…

  23. Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
    April 8, 2019

There is a reason for everything under the sun: I read on DNO where a labor party supporter advised perhaps Roosevelt “not to build a hospital in Marigot because they are lazy.”

I suppose that illiterate labor party supporter advised not to build a hospital in Marigot because the people of Marigot are lazy.

The lesson from that is simply: “fools rushing in where angels fear to thread .”

The crash landing is an example of how imperative it is to expedite the building of the hospital.

Let us suppose for a moment the aircraft burst into flames, and passengers survived, nevertheless, suffered second and third degree burns to their body; without immediate emergency treatment they could ultimately die.

What if some suffered broken arms or legs; rather than trying to get to Roseau the bones could be treated and reset at the nearest hospital that would be Marigot!

The powers that be are not concern about such pending events as long  as Marigot/Wesley people are…

Was alcohol a contributing factor? Maybe the pilot forgot to lower the landing gear.

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
      April 9, 2019

When an aircraft controller gives an Aircraft pilot clearance to land, even if they are landing by the use of Radar; unless they are in plain view of the control tower, the controller cannot okay the landing!

The reason is the aircraft must be in plain view where they are monitored by the controller in the control tower, using a high powered Binocular; they are designed these days for night vision also.

A Binocular is an optical device, providing good depth effect, for use with both eyes, consisting of two small telescopes fitted together side by side, each telescope having two prisms between the eyepiece and objective!

Now the  ground controller should see the landing gears in place hanging downwards before final instructions to land are given!

The prime minister has constantly baited people with the idea of a hospital like a carrot in front of a donkey during election time. So, let’s say people slammed their heads on the windows, how do we provide health care? I know a hospital cost money but instead of working on that, boys from the hood have 30k car ride flashing money on WhatsApp and no, it’s not drug money. You might think “Tell marigot people to suck salt” but it’s not about politics That is the main airport in the country so even if you red, white or blue that’s where you land. So even if you get a 5k you can’t pretend like the health care in the country isn’t in the trash. The minister of health says it out of it hands, I guess a marigot hospital is a hot potato nobody wants to hold. And now the priority now is for Melissa to pass and lobby for votes and make promise

Hispaniola is one big Island, embracing two different languages. The biggest one located on the East of the island is the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo) Spanish speaking and on the west, a bit smaller in size is Haiti Pout Au Prince (French Speaking) on the east.
The economic deterioration of Haiti came as a result in recent tim e through corrupt Papa Doc and his immature, irrelevant Son Baby Doc. They both fleeced Haiti`s economy and is in deep poverty as Dominica is. So the Docs ruined, and killed Haiti, while in Dominica Skerrit and his failed corrupt labour government has killed or Dominica and reduced our people to begging. Haitians arrive in Dominica (we welcome them) in droves as there is nothing in Haiti for them, while our people are in deep poverty and Bobol due to failed, inept Skerrit and his failed, immature incompetent blind Labour 18 ministers. They must all go the same way Papa Doc and Baby Doc were kicked out of office. Who is next. We will Kick out Skerrit. Go!

That wicked Labor Regime should never construct a hospital in Marigot, because when airplanes crash and passengers suffer injuries, they will die on the way to Roseau as usual. We were lucky this time around. That hospital is long overdue.

Thank God that there were no injuries. That looks like one of the planes coming from the Dominican Republic with Haitians and other passengers,

What if there were injuries? What hospital or medical facility will the 30 or more injured passengers taken to?

Just asking my fellow Dominicans especially as the election draws near………where is the healthcare for the airport, the people of Marigot, Wesley and the other neighbouring villages.????

Just asking my people to open their eyes……

They’d better not be insured. No hospital close.

A situation like this highlights one of the reason why Marigot needs a functioning hospital ASAP. I hope no one is hurt.
