DNO has just received information that a house collapsed a short while ago on Independence street in Roseau between Kennedy Avenue and Great Marlborough Street.
Reports are that there were no injuries.
An eyewitness to the incident told DNO that workmen were carrying out repairs to the building when it came crashing to the ground. Fortunately, according to the eyewitness, there was no one inside the building at the time. He said the men, who were working on the outside, and the occupants of a beauty salon next door, hurriedly got out of the way.
…Dominicans will never learn, we need “PRAYER”. We should not break the bridge while standing on it. its time to come together and try to find solutions, not welcoming the devil by opening more doors so we could laugh at…hurricane season is approaching…politic cannot stop that trumpet from blowing…enough of that foolish mapwee. lets make room to grow…praise God that no one got hurt..
DNO should block some people….
Another climate resilient house gone up in smoke. How do we not have engineers to certify these repairs? Judging from the foolishness at Melville Hall Airport, this is no surprise.
Dominicans are just a set of wicked people, crying down their own country. But time will tell.
Stupid little fool….
They were preventing the people living in the yard to entering the yard. They had no regard for persons with houses in the yard. Owners could not pass through. They got what they deserve.
So no one understands that the contractor is supppsed to inspect the structure to determine if the job could be done? Additionally, how is the owner compensated for the collapsed walls? Regardless of the integrity of the structure the contractor is obligated to return it to pre-existing condition or better; that is the purpose of liability insurance.
Good luck with that in DA.
Alas!
Marion Shop Go!
Now where I going to buy my Cherbon /coals by de tin in de week!?
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king, and in Dominica, anyone with a hammer is a builder.
At least they think so to the detriment of anyone hiring them.
And if you don’t have a hammer, as long anyone supports the “Evil Dr Supermo” and his DLP cabal
God does everything well. Thankfully no person or vehicle was passing at the time. Also from the looks of it, it appears they still had to complete the capping. I am grateful to God that the workmen we not on top of the building at the time of the collapse.
Continued from my earlier comment…
I might add: eight years ago a Permanent Secretary, in response to a recommendation, told me I was “talking crap”. Well, if the crap I was talking had been acted upon, we would not now be faced with the disastrous situation at Antrim.
Please forgive him Mr B
The new roof was way to resilient for the foundation!
Hehehehe! that one made my day.
Poor engineering skills cause that house to collapse. Dominica do not have certified structural experience builders to repair the nations so badly needed. This house collapse to raise a big concern to the 31 recent contracts awarded and signed by local to repair the Petro Casa houses. How sad. Dominicans cant rebuild their own country.
The ministry of housing should be held fully responsible if they did not send an engineer to ensure that this house was structurally sound for repairing. Dominica is still way behind proper building code in this twentieth century. Beware! Resilient building without outstanding engineering will be a total failure.
From my observations, there are countless other “accidents” waiting to happen. Flimsy 2×4 scaffolding being a case in point.
While lower down the scale the response from those on the job may well be “shut your face”, those higher up and supposedly qualified, turn a deaf ear and turn a blind eye. At best the response is “we know what we’re doing” which invariably means, they don’t!
Workers have to be very careful with these hurricane battered houses.
Happy no one was injured but good ting that fall cause that would not survive another hurricane
The house was weak passed maria or it was undermined if it was insured insurance have to investigate
This must be the results of the supremo’s red DLP government “housing revolution” But again this is just another “Normal Day” in roseau
I would like to congratulat Dominica on being the first climate resilliant nation in the world! Look at that roof!
Bring it on Hurricane season 2018
The only sensible comment here is B.E.B…Dominicans are just too negative! It’s sickening! Grow up my people!
A Lesson learned… hopefully!
Oh my every body say they construction worker. How can u dig under the house. Obviously it will fall. Them man who work on it . it look like it nearly fall on them man
The hurricane season is still 2 days away, Joseph Isaac sold his soul to Skerrit and in return Skerrit made him the hurricane Minster, it not even raining and house collapsing in Roseau? Skerrit needs to change his hurricane resilient minister man
Sometimes I just don’t know how to respond to statements like these. Negative, accusatory, not at all related to the issue or story at hand nor the story being reported, trying to bring politics into everything. Some people just do not realize their negative and sometimes unfounded comments and attitude is a turn off to others, and actually push them toward the very direction the commentators are trying to pull them away from.
Badbaje
That is called the new disease “nasty mouth haters”. These people just don’t realise that their minds and perhaps souls have been taken. They live, breathe, sleep, speak the toxic politics of their associates.
Your assessment is the same as mine. Any intelligent forward thinking person who genuinely would like to see a change of government would pause and ask whether the toxic alternative is worth making that change. So rather than attracting support the strategies are causing sensible people to think twice.
Sometimes you wonder, what exactly is supposed to happen the day following the election of the opposition into government? If it were to suddenly happen, have they thought beyond the election results? If they have, I am waiting patiently to hear!
Hurricane Maria recovery; new economy; higher productivity; a more civil society; higher education; lazy people becoming industrious etc. etc. what are the practical plans other than bringing down DA?
I want aware that these guys were the workmen on that house because yeah, these would be the person’s or the contractor to blame for this mishap, unless there was a mini earth quake under that house only.
Cowboy builders I hope they have liability insurance
Very few of them have insurance.
Zero resilience!
Just happy that no one was injured. During repairs and construction of buildings one should always wear the correct protective gears and attire (helmet, boots, etc.). People have to begin to take safety issues, particularly on construction sites, much more serious.
Ha,ha, Ibo. This is Dominica remember. Our leader threatening the head of the state college and saying he will pay studentes overdue fees but at he same time goverments own company Dowasco telling consumers they will shut their pipe if they do not pay their bill. You mean you leave poor people without water, the basic of life if they have no money to pay? What is the difference between them and students? President of state college appointed by P.M. , chairman of the water also appointed by P.M. Both from the diaspora. What is the difference?
Pay your damn bill and be quiet you all want government do everything for you all.
The students are the future
What good a helmet going and do if a house fall on you?
Well, at least you will have all the bits of your brain in one pot and do not have to go and scrape it from the pavement.
Dominican Passports, why do motor-cyclists wear helmets? The helmets help to protect the head, it’s a no brainer. Look at countries that take safety seriously. Not even a visitor on a construction site can enter the grounds without a helmet and the additional appropriate gears. Stop your usurious remark.
I thought that I knew Roseau and the streets of the city, as a retired police officer but I cant identify the area. In some other posting I should beable to view it better, or I’ll see it when I go to town.
B.E.B: I can assure you that you know the location, very well. Opposite the collapsed structure is the building formerly occupied by Banque Française Commerciale as well as…
The house on the right is the Dominica Trade Union Hall where political public meetings are traditionally held in Roseau. That should give you an idea of the location.
That’s the same house them guys were digging underneath and I was questioning their action. One told me I’m no construction worker shut my face. Oh well, that says alot.
Watch who you hire to do a job for you!!!!
Shut your face and that is the end result? THEY clearly do not know construction then.
If such is true, it’s about common sense. There are some things you don’t need to be experienced, or educated in the field, you just need common sense. If I cut off one leg, my center of gravity will change.
