Leader of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) Lennox said at news conference on Thursday that his party condemns the attack on former Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidate for the Marigot Constituency Anika Charles.
Less than 24 hours after being announced as a candidate at the DLP’s recent Delegate’s Conference held in Londonderry, Charles withdrew from the political race due to what Prime Minister Skerrit described as a “salacious, vicious and downright nasty campaign” which was launched against her immediately after her endorsement.
Although he did not mention the source of the attack, it is believed that Skerrit was referring to a highly critical and derogatory voice note about Charles which was circulating on social media.
“This young lady is my family. We emphasize with her; we stand with her. We condemn the attacks on her which only surfaced because she answered the call to public service,” Linton said while addressing the news conference which was held at the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) building on Thursday.
He also said that his party is “very disappointed” with the speed with which Charles was thrown under the bus by the DLP.
“We are very disappointed with the speed with which she was thrown under the bus by the labour party at the same time that the labour party leader was pledging to stand by another female labour party candidate about whom certain allegations and suggestions of unsuitability were also making the rounds,” Linton explained. “The discrimination in a matter involving someone from Marigot is glaring and we cannot, but take note. This is not good for Dominica.”
“Marigot lives matter too, change is a must it is not an option,” Linton declared.
The UWP leader also distanced the party from the attacks made on the former DLP candidate, stating that his party “had absolutely nothing” to do with it.
“The Prime Minister knows for example, that it was members from his Dominica Labour Party in Marigot who launched a campaign against his chosen candidate for the Marigot constituency prior to his announcement on February 17th 2019,” he argued.
Linton went on to say that the Prime Minister also knows that the controversial voice note had nothing to do with the UWP either.
“Yet, he maliciously put the blame on us for the unfortunate situation that affected Anika Charles and her family over the past week,” he remarked.
UWP president, Senator Isaac Baptiste also gave some remarks at the news conference in which he stressed that his party respects the dignity of all and rejects all forms of character assassination, especially by politicians and their political operatives regardless of which party they represent.
My two senses tells me that people are fit for positions if they’re qualified, experienced, and or have the abilities to do the job! Personal qualities are very important like your people skills, etc., depending on the job being applied for, but our personal private lives should remain such. UNLESS, they’re daring in the public and can have negative effects on the position.

1 person did a voice note and sent it to someone else who then shared it and it spread like wildfire. The same people calling for Linton to condemn the “attack” are the ones sharing the voice note. People, it was not an attack, it was someone’s opinion of the lady and it went viral. Only 1 person said something that may or may not be factual.
An attack is when a whole government and members of its team can stage a rally in lagoon to bash one man, call him all manner of names etc. Then continue for years, attacking him everyday on various radio stations, on facebook etc…that is an attack. When it came to the appointment of nefarious characters to represent the country on the world stage who turned out to be crooks and criminals Skerritt and his mouthpieces were quick to tell us that they had done due diligence which if it was true or thorough would have turned up skeletons to be avoided. Similarly, in the case of this candidate, it is proof that Skerritt cannot conduct due diligence. It would also be useful to fact check when this nastiness began because we have had many elections and people would string shoes in the neighbourhood to tease their neighbours and green t-shirts would be hung out too. Once elections were over, little tensions remained here and there but generally, the country moved on.
We had some bad moments too like when we had the constitutional crisis but that too passed.

A Prime Minister’s conduct has a profound effect on the ethos of a country. He/She sets the atmosphere of the nation. Some of the most viscous and denigrating personal attacks are permitted in parliament, which is probably the most revered institution in the country. What do you expect to reap? Attacking women who are running for elections in Dominica, seems to be a pattern. I remember when this honorable woman in St. Joseph was attacked without remorse, but I like the way she stood up against the bullies. Is it becoming acceptable in Dominica, that if a woman chooses to run for a seat, that she should ware a disguise to hide her gender in order to prevents these types of vicious attacks.
When I got this disgusting and discriminatory audio I was totally taken aback by the verbal violence perpetrated against this woman, and I was wondering whether Mr. Linton would condemn it? While I think it should have been done much earlier, I am glad he did. That type of discriminatory behavior against our mothers, our sisters, our daughters, our women should never be acceptable, and should always be condemned. This verbal assault on women in politics, as was done to the senator from St. Joseph, should end immediately. Dominicans should show the world that we are better than that.

Much of the finance available to government comes from the CBI, a program that is heavily criticized by the leadership of the UWP, some even calling for it to be shut down. So it is fair to ask of the leader of the opposition how he intends to finance his projects. This boils down to careful screening of candidates. It is the duty of the DLP to conduct proper vetting of their candidates. Hope this serves as a learning lesson.
This gas nothing to do with screening of candidates. If skerrit wasnt a dictator and had allow the DLP marigot constituency branch elect their candidate like the DLP constitution calls for, then she would have been properly vetted.

Likewise, before you recruit your candidates, it is of utmost importance that thorough evaluation, assessment and investigation of the perspective candidate be done. Skerrit’s failure to properly vet his new candidates is indicative of how he runs the CBI program, and by extension, the country. The very lax methods were used to sell Dominican passports to international fugitives and recruit corrupt diplomats. When will they learn?

I listened to the voice mail and it seemed to me that it is a family matter and not a political matter. I think the narrator said that lady calls him Uncle. So as in our politically infected island especially now with elections in the air, everything is political–even the sunrise and sunset. How much progress can we make individually and collectively? What a waste of a press conference. Nothing new other than to blame the DLP for the attack on Ms Charles. Even the applause were fake. More empty promises with no real plan on how to achieve them. Just saying that you are going to grow certain segments of the economy is not a plan. Also, who are their partners for the passport program? How much will Dominica benefit from the sale of passports. He seemed hesitant to say much but we know the plans for Henley and Partners. This was just a waste of my time.

I am still labor but I deal with truth and not partisan. Honestly speaking UWP did not attack Ms. Anika Charles. From the time Ms. Charles whom I know and respect was announced by Mr. Skerrit as the DLP candidate for Marigot, right there and then questions were raised about Ms. Charles by laborites present. The first statement made by a laborite was, “PM mad man.” UWP never publicly attacked Ms. Charles. Now supporters of the UWP that know Ms. Charles may have called her out but how can I blame them for doing so? The PM did not do his due diligence and, he should not be the one to pick a candidate for the people since it is the people that know the people from the community. So while I understand the leadership of UWP condemning personal attack on Ms. Charles or any person that wants to run for public office, I must admit PM Skerrit put the lady in that because he failed to do his job. That’s why before two people get married there are usually 3 announcements made.
I like your comments because they were honest, fair and balanced. They cannot be truthfully condemned. If anyone doubted that Skerrit has a penchant for dictatorial tendencies, this is incontrovertible proof. The delegates of each constituency should have their choice of candidates for the upcoming general election. Instead of this, Skerrit ran rough shod over the delegates, in complete violation of the DLP’s constitution, and handpicked his non-resident wife and every other candidate for battle. Many mistakes are made and pertinent things are usually overlooked when one man wants to hog all the fame and glory for himself. Character matters! The lady was simply unfit for the position she sought. Nothing is sexist or gender biased about that. Its the truth. Allow the people to voice their opinions and have their choices. The people’s voice is the voice of God.
