American Eagle worries

Dominicans have been told to prepare for the worst as American Eagle get ready to end flights from Puerto Rico in 2013.

The airline has confirmed plans to suspend flights from San Juan to a number of destinations in the Caribbean in attempts to shave $75-million per year in labor costs.

Executive Director of the Discover Dominica Authority Collin Piper told the 41st annual general meeting of the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association at the Fort Young hotel on Wednesday night that American eagle has also confirmed ongoing discussions with three companies to help breach the gaps which will be left by the airline.

He did not name the companies, only referring to them as ‘X, Y, Z.’

“We also heard from American Airlines who confirmed that they are in discussion with three companies towards an American Airline service or an American Eagle service operated by X, Y, Z,” Piper said. “We don’t know what will materialize but I heard someone mention that they were able to book tickets up to July next year.”

Piper is anticipating that a decision will be made soon and that American Airlines will announce its intentions concerning that matter.

Despite this, the is warning that Dominica should prepare for the worst.

“I think we need to prepare for the worst in this particular case because if they are not able to come to an agreement with any one of these three airlines its entirely possible that American Airlines will make other arrangements for those ticketed passengers and that would include putting them on seats of alternate airlines,” the DDA boss disclosed.

American Eagle serves Dominica with 896 seats from San Juan weekly.

If there was a flight from Ft Lauderdale or Miami to DA. Would anyone care about San Juan?

It is achievable without extending the runway.

Let us talk about a real alternative via a REAL American City. One that I can say “I am in the US” when I arrive … I can walk out the door and hire a car and drive to anywhere I want.

San Juan is a glorified Elis Island where once there you are still not ‘there’.

      dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/business/international-airport-wont-solve-dominicas-air-access-problem-piper/

“According to Piper 60 percent of the flights coming into Puerto Rico arrive in the afternoon but American Airlines is not concerned about that.

He said the airlines have an agenda and it is now incumbent upon us to service the banks that come into San Juan in the afternoons.

“We as a destination need to go out and sell that availability to another airline and convince them to come from San Juan so that we can now attract people and get them into Dominica the same day. An international airport will not solve that,” he said.”

What happened to Piper? he was talking so much sense then.

DA is not an unprofitable route. Stop the panic.

Also, let us please do the above … afternoon flights. How many of OUR visitors overnight in SJU? Think about all that revenue this island is missing out on.

THIS should be our main focus.

Yes I am contradicting myself. Personally I do not want to fly via San Juan, but whatever is the best for this country is my heart.

Plenty opportunities on the horizon. Invite,Invite. Contact all; large, small all size of commercial airlines to come to Dominica. Copa Airlines fly to Saint Marteen, San Juan and others. Spirit and Jet Blue fly various destinations in the Caribbean as well, Dominca can be a stop on the way to…. Cape Air fly all airports in PR, Tortola, Anguila, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Nevis. N&M aviation out of PR have small 19 seater commuters. The past can’t be changed, your intention today can curb the future. Waiting is degenerating, no time to waste. Get informed, have the statistics meet with the suppliers and the people who are willing to help. Dream big, start small. As a full time resident of Dominica I am willing to put some time into it.
    ARE YOU? :-D

We need to form an alliance with Dominicans overseas to collect funds towards an International Airport.Nothing lower than a XCD100.00 a month to an International Airport fund at National Bank of Dominica from locals and diaspora, DNO can also give an update on the how much we’re making then when we get enough we can get local engineers and friendly governments and agencies to assist us in the building of the Airport, we can do it, if we just pull together.

Instead of paying airlines all of this money and giving liat 8 million, use that money and purchase few airplanes, and form you guys own company, purchase some small airplanes like liat for flight in the Caribbean and at list 3 to 5 Airbus A320s to replace the american eagle route and to fly routes like Miami and and a few other connecting flight where more individual travel to Dominica for a start and lets see how it work.Living in the united states there are many people that are scared to board the dash 8 and atr, i’ave heard it my self from lots of people when i spread the word Dominica to them. Government of Dominica, i don’t know if u will see this comment but i do hope you guys do and think of it and try something… remember start small and grow big…i love my country

Ross University and the students bring a lot of money into Dominica. The Dominican government should be taking the airline matter very seriously.

” American eagle has also confirmed ongoing discussions with three companies to help breach the gaps which will be left by the airline.
He did not name the companies, only referring to them as ‘X, Y, Z. ”

In order for someone to believe anything in the quote above, that person, or persons would have to be existing on another planet or be out of their natural mind.

    Observation!

American Eagle is cutting operation; and let us simply say is no longer interested in serving ” Dominica; ” to my mind because they are not making enough money from the Dominica, Puerto Rico route.

If it is not profitable for American Eagle to operate within the route they have in the Caribbean, how can this man make the claim that American Eagle is arranging, or trying to influence, or have ongoing discussions with airlines X, Y, & Z to breach the gaps, which they are leaving because it is not profitable for them to operate.

That is not the way it works in a business world, perhaps in the mythical businesses world of Dominica that’s how it works, but I do not believe there are many X, Y, and Z operators of commercial airlines which directors would step into a situation where they know one mans meat is definitely another man’s Poisson, and eat it.

    Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque

    • Another Observation
      October 22, 2012

Actually, this is in fact a plausibble statement. AE is cutting service because it is not profitable (due to labor costs, per the above). Subcontracting the service to another operator could be quite profitable if AE simply manages the booking and customer service processes and allows the other operator to take on the more intensive labor and fuel costs. Now, I’m not saying that the statement is true – just highlighting that this could be a viable and potentially attractive option for AE.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        October 22, 2012

Good thought, but unless you are better informed than I am; that is not how it works, American Eagle had to apply for that route, I believe they are licensed to fly that route; to my knowledge the arrangement cannot be transferred to any other airline without the blessing of the authorities who assign flying route:

        FAA, or some other authority!

        Here is a for instance:

I got unto an American Eagle flight in Puerto Rico, traveling to Dominica, for some reason American Eagle over-flew Dominica, and went on to St. Lucia, it was schedule to land in Castries, at the municipal airport, however, an emergency caused an detour to View Fort, International.

I got scared, thus when we landed at the International Airport, I ask the pilot to let me and my daughter off the aircraft; I intended to get into a taxi and go to Castries airport where I hope to get unto an LIAT flight bound for Dominica.

I was informed by the captain, “they could not let my daughter and me out of the aircraft, because they were not licensed (American Eagle that is) to land at the International Airport in St. Lucia, the only reason they were allowed to land there was due to the emergency which caused the Air Traffic controllers to direct them to land there.”

So, it is not as simple as trying to curtail cost, and getting agency’s to sell tickets; and evade labor cost it extends beyond that, it is more complicated than that; Piper is doing nothing more than gimmicking right now.

Even if American Eagle were to continue serving Dominica, the problem we have with air transportation into and out of Dominica, especially where it pertains to international arrivals, and departures will persists; our resolve is an International Airport.

That is the only resolve to the problem, and procrastinating will not solve the problem in a thousand years to come.

http://www.caribbean360.com/index.php/opinion/563294.html Based on one of my earlier comments some seem to think that i’m stating that Dominica should not have an international airport. That is not the case. I waz simply stating that it may not be the most cost efficient route for air transport within the region and internationally. The posted link reminds us of the difficulty and expense to the passenger and governments associated with air transport in the region not just Dominica.

    • 4progress
      October 22, 2012

@STILL….tks for pointing us to the article…its make for interesting reading and updating on the current situation relating to air transport.

A serious discussion is needed at the CARICOM level, which the PM should be championing the case for a proper level playing field for air transport in the Caribbean, since we have a great deal more than others to benefit.

All Caribbean leaders looking out for themselves and their nation, nothing is wrong with that, except some nations like Trinidad are much bigger economically and can not see the error of their ways until told.

The PM for his part should have invested the $8M in CAL, not LIAT, ensuring better returns. THIS IS BUSINESS, NOT CHARITY.

I always check the new to know what going on in my country and the sorroundings. It is not good news to learn come 2013 will not have a airline to connect as to America.I0. agree with those of you who say we need an international airport, but getting down to the facts, even if we have the money to build an international airport, that might solve future problems but not the one we a faced with. The problem that we are faced with is to find an immediate replacement for American eagle to continue the flow of visitors to the island, and to ensure that Ross university students are brought in and out of Dominica.
Many times we dwell on the problems, but do not seek for solutions, yes we don’t have an international air port and certainly will not build one tomorrow. I hope your suggestions are welcome. To Whom It May Concern, I hope those good ones can help us build a better Dominica. Your criticism are also welcome, surely, they should not be used as stumbling block but stepping stones.
I think we should stop play politics people, that is a serious matter let’s put our head together for a worthy cause. I hope that the Prime minister and cabinet fines a solution so all Dominican and visitors can benefit from.
Please Mr. Prime Minister don’t wait for something to happen the nation is depending on the government of Dominica to come up with a quick fix to solve the current problem.
I hope the replacement for the Eagle is already in place as I write.

LIAT’s airfare from Puerto Rico to Dominica cost more than an airfare from Florida to Dominica. I may not travel to Dominica again if LIAT is the only airline to and from the Island, and I am not the only one.

Still, an international airport must be supported by travel activity which can be created with an increase hotel rooms. I remember when I worked in the govt service few years ago the plan was to build a few thousand rooms as they realise the local population would never justify an international airport.

We would fly straight home, also there would be more than one flight in and out of the Island. There are questions of how many people fly to Dominica, but the answer is simple. If there was access, roads, overall convenience you would be surprised how many people that would be going home. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

    • Anthony P. Ismael
      October 20, 2012

To answer your question, the marketplace would make such a decision. Bear in mind that the route is very profitable for American Airlines. Furthermore, a larger aircraft means that the cost to travel is spread out over a larger number of travelers, thus reducting total overall cost to each passenger.
However, because only small aircrafts such as the Dash 8 and ATR turboprops can land safely into Melville Hall, we are at a constant disadvantage.

Melville Hall was 4777 feet, but then the recent renovations added about 1000 feet so it is now 5761 feet long.

So Vigie George Charles is a bit longer. But my point about Vigie’s better approach still stands.

    • Wright Brothers
      October 19, 2012

Vigie Airport in St.Lucia is actually shorter than Melville Hall, but it has a clear approach from the sea. That makes all the difference. The planes do not have to negotiate a forested valley and can land day or night.

If instead of spending all that money at Melville Hall we had started a new airport at woodford Hill we would have take off and landing from the sea and we would be even better off than Vigie…..But some so called “experts” thought otherwise. Most of us will never live to see another airport….so thats it.

100 seater??? When AA plane most times has 8-15 passengers? How much is fuel? There are times plane is full and that is Ross U students for semester, Creole fesival, Carnival…after that, almost empty plane for rest of year. Let me ask u this…if u have bus in DA and drive from Grand Bay to Roseau and u have 12-15 passengers, u make money, correct? If most of the year, except for the festivities I mention above, u only have 2, 3 or maybe 5 passengers that will not even pay ur gas. I know this is not true, but put urself on
Eagles side. Imagine paying rocket fuel from San Juan or Miami (or wherever) and only most of the time the plane is empty when there should be around 34 passengers. I am not happy about it, but please try to understand the logic behind it. GET REAL! International doesn’t mean anything. We need to fill up the planes and someone isn’t doing it right because, besides myself, many people didn’t want to pay the recent prices or take 2, 3 or 4 days getting here or taking that many days returning home. Ur vacation is already finished with just the travel time. I have been encounterng this for the last 2 years. Every once in a while u luck out but, people, please be real. Dominica will go more downward with this airline thing.

Hello Dominicans!!! I can’t believe how ignorant you all are. What does AA removing flights from all the Caribbean has to do with the Prime Minister? AA does not operate under PM Skerrit. Whether or not you are in favor of how he runs the country this is out of his league. Dominica is a country made of hills and mountains where are you all putting the international airport, further more every thing can’t be done at once, Dominicans want Hospital, airport, roads etc. where is the money coming from? Why don’t you all that is complaining go by your own jet. And in a way I am very happy because Puerto Ricans take all my stuff when I’m heading back to the US that is why I travel via Barbados from the US and then Liat to DA. Much easier and cheaper with Jet Blue than AA anyway. So all is not lost.

“A country that elects a child as it’s leader, will have no progress.”
And sadly to say this lack of air access to D/ca are some of the results of this childish P.M and Pal Reps in this land.
Well at least we can take a Boat ride from Martinique and St.Lucia to come to D/ca.
The labour party is trying something as the day goes by, but it is definitely not working.
It is time to take them out. The Pal Reps are always overseas in some meeting that bring fourth no fruits.

Puerto Rico is a transit point to to oher U.S. destinations for most travellers from Dominica anyway and we do have atlernatives, certainly as far as resident Dominicans are concerned. For instance by flying to St. Maarten and from there take a discount flight to a major U.S. desination or Canada direct with less hassle than passing through the hub at San Juan.
I’m more worried about the impact this has on the future prospects of Ross University here in Dominica.

  51. October 19, 2012

Thank you mr Piper for finally advising us to prepare for the worse. I am surprised Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit who always likes to be the in the sportlight did not call a press conference on this one.
Even if Anerican Eagle decides to quit, Dummyinicans have absolutely nothing to worry about for the following reasons:
    1. Skerrit’s investment on liat will finally pay off as Liat will hire more people than the Eagle did and liat will be able carry the slack from San Juan and bring more visitore to DA on a daily and timely basis.

2.That’s why we never needed an international airport. The millions of $’s we dumped on night landing will become very significant as we will be able to accomodate 24/7 service.

3.Since American Eagle is in discussion with three airlines, we might very well get three jets to replace one. In fact I know both of the planes that brought Dominicans to vote in the last election will be flying here on a daily basis and tickets will be 75% less than what AA use to charge.

    4. In addition to all of that, Christopher Colubus will be sending two ships as well. Boy we in good shape in DA!

    October 19, 2012

If the Skertte administration had take out the politics from their eyes and heart and put Dominicans first, we would not be in that situation today.

The UWP had acquired land for a new runway. Because of our mountainous island the air strip had to be in the opposite direction. All they had to do when they came into power was to continue the work that had started, So even Eagle cannot come but at least other jets could come.

Is time this present Government stop taking us for granted and look for the Benefits of ALL Dominicans and not just their pockets.

We should not have that problem today.

Raffel Gonzavel had state in Benjamin Park @ Portsmouth that we do not need an international airport but he is building his own.

Good morning my people. Well this is nothing new because American Airlines put out a statement in 2011 which said they will stop offering the service in March of 2013. Mr Piper is the Executive Director of DDA and he cannot tell us which Airline that American Airline is in consultation with to take over the routes. Well I will suggest that we have Caribbean Airlines take over the routes in that way we will have service and we will keep our money in the Caribbean. Also Liat operates out of Puerto Rico so they can adjust their schedule to accommodate American Airlines flights coming from the main land. Anyway am coming to DA on the 26 for creole fest and I hope I will be able to purchase tickets.

I actually agree with you. I am no fan of Skerrit’s at all! In fact quite the contrary but I suport his decision to invest in LIAT.

In fact, ALL the islands should be doing that with the objective of making LIAT like a public bus system between the islands. Frequent and cheap.

My concerns reagrding the $8 million are what is DA getting out of it? What are the overall plans for LIAT? What exzactly is needed from each island to achieve these objectives as opposed to Skerrit just writing a cheque and that’s it.

He really needs to send out a press release giving all details regarding the $8 million and the current status of LIAT and what is beig discussed for the future of LIAT.
