AMP and DSC put on 4 week course in music business

AMPMembers of The Association of Music Professionals (AMP) and other interested persons are being given the opportunity to participate in a course on “The Fundamentals of the Music Business in the 21st Century”.

AMP is organizing the course in association with the Dominica State College (DSC). It is carded for DSC from September 16 to October 9 2014.

Sessions will be three hours long and held twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 8pm at the Dominica State College. Participants can expect to receive in-depth knowledge of various aspects of the Music Business and the functions thereof. The topics to be covered in this course include:

1. Copyright and neighbouring rights law as the foundation of the Music Industry.

2. The roles of different actors in the industry – Composer/songwriter, performers, booking agents, managers, lawyers; the composer/songwriter’s team; the performer’s team.

3. Where the money comes from for composers/songwriters; where the money comes from for performers.
4. Basic elements of a recording contract.
5. Basic elements of a performance contract.
6. Basic elements of a music publishing contract

7. The management of Neighbouring rights for performers and record producers.

7. The role of collective management organizations like ECCO in the music industry.

8 The role of music publishers.

9 The role of record companies.

10 Music use in audio-visual productions including advertising

11. The international dimension of the Industry

12. The impact of the digital environment on the music industry. Youtube; Facebook; Itunes. spotify etc.
13. The various income streams that exist and how to maximize revenue from these.

The course is well suited to current practitioners in the industry particularly those with a management function; Performers and Songwriters; Lawyers with an interest in entertainment law; employees of financial institutions; owners/managers of entertainment venues; broadcasting or cable operations; internet radio operators; advertising agencies and others who create advertisements; and organizers of festivals and competitions.

The course will be facilitated by renowned Caribbean Copyright Expert, Chairman of the Eastern Caribbean Collective Organization for Music Rights (ECCO), Economist, Chairman of AMP and the President of the Association of Caribbean Copyright Societies, Mr. McCarthy Marie.

Participants who are current members of AMP will be expected to pay $250. Potential AMP members, (those who sign up for AMP membership after today’s date) are expected to pay $350 which will include their first annual subscription. Non-members or participants who have no interest in becoming members of AMP will be expected to pay $500 for the course.

Participants will be assessed throughout the course, which will account for 40% of their overall grades. The program will climax with an exam, which will account for 60% of their overall grades. Successful participants will receive certificates, which will be issued by the DSC

Registration and the collection of fees is at the Dominica State College School of Continuing Education. The maximum number of students that can be accommodated is 30 and potential participants are asked to register early. All participants are expected to have a laptop computer, Tablet or smartphone.
