On Friday 22nd May, 2015 local software development business, Tropicode Software Solutions and Jolly’s Pharmacy Ltd collaborated to award the commendable efforts of the 4th form Information Technology class of the Dominica Grammar School.
This event marked the end of a four week pro-bono IT Workshop carried out by Tropicode Software Solutions with the intent to teach the DGS students how the programming skills learnt in school could be applied to software development in the real world.
Davidson Edwards, Founder of Tropicode Software Solutions, says additional goals of the workshop were to gauge how quickly the students could pick up advanced programming concepts, to familiarize them with the idea of working as a team on development projects, and to introduce the students with developing programs to meet the specifications of a client. He believes that the results attained during the workshop suggest that the local IT workforce could be bolstered by giving students more serious IT training at a younger age.
Throughout the workshop, the students were organized into teams and engaged in competitions with the chance to win cash prizes. At the closing ceremony, the two development teams who won the workshop’s final competition were awarded with first and second place cash prizes of EC$200 and EC$100, respectively. The final competition had challenged the students to build their first web application, with Jolly’s Pharmacy Ltd acting as the prospective client. The specified application was one which would allow Jolly’s Pharmacy Ltd to develop profiles for their customers, based on personal attributes and medical history. The prizes were delivered by Davidson Edwards and Malcolm Pendengue.
The Winners:
First place: Team Matrix, comprised of Dilano Millar, Arundel Desbonne, and Charlton Mc Clean;
Second place: Team Buckaneers, comprised of Saeed Seaman and Nathan Francis.
Despite having no web development experience prior to the workshop, the winning team applied their new skills to design a front-end, with a beautiful interface, that connected with a server-side PHP program via HTTP.
