Rubis Dominica presents $3000 to Wesley Community Preschool

RUBIS Dominica recently donated $3000 to the Wesley Community Pre School PTA to conduct major upgrades to the school’s ceiling, general ambiance and supplies.

Members of the PTA began their ceiling repair project utilizing much of their own resources in the construction. Assistance was sought from the energy company to complete the building’s ceiling. The work at the 25 year old school was necessitated by an initiative by the Ministry of Education’s as part of their plan to restructure the Early Childhood Learning System and to enhance the working environment for the students.

Wesley Community Pre School’s Headmistress Mrs. June Joseph explained the work played a crucial role in the school becoming compliant with Ministry’s standards to foster a conducive learning environment as they introduce a revamped Early Childhood Learning System. She said, “This renovation will enable us to implement new learning strategies which will promote the physical,
educational and motor skills of our students and this will prepare and empower them within the community of Wesley and through their lives.”

Mrs. Joseph also thanked the parents, many of whom were tradesmen, she added, “The parents worked very hard to rebuild the ceiling and the school was very grateful for the additional funds from RUBIS to complete the work.” A parent also commended RUBIS for not only assisting in the school’s development but also that of Dominica’s crucial human resource. Nicholson Dodds, Country Representative, RUBIS West Indies Ltd, said RUBIS makes it a point to support sustainable projects in the communities in which they operate. He said the ceiling project was earmarked for support for two main reasons. “The Wesley Community Pre School’s PTA made a tremendous effort to help themselves and the objective behind the project is one very dear to Team RUBIS – the development of our youth through education.

The Wesley Community Preschool has an enrollment of 25 students and was founded by Mrs. Joseph.

Congratulations to the PTA and staff of the Wesley Community Preschool for a job well done, i hope that you continue to strive for excellence.
I would however like to comment on a statement made by the Education Officer for Early Childhood asking that every preschool on the island be staffed with two teachers or those who are unable to do so will have to be shut down. While i understand the importance of having two teachers, i am concerned as to how the preschools within the small communities are going to survive. We are now talking about the alarming rate of Child Abuse cases; when our three and four year olds are not at school where will they be? doing what and with whom? this Early Childhood matter has been a long time cry for the teachers, children and parents of Dominica. i think it’s time the authorities look at the bigger picture since they are pretending to be blind.
By the way if thousands can be spent on the NEP, why can’t the same be done for Early Childhood Education, as a matter of fact some of the interns should have been sent to assist at the preschools.

Thanks RUBIS for assisting the little ones.
@ concerned: How can one teacher take care of bathroom supervision while having to supervise the rest of the class? What will you say if an unsupervised child is injured or molested while in the bathroom or left in the classroom? Who prepares and supervises snacks? Apart from the convenience of having 2 or more teachers, the liability issues are tremendous.

Teacher June you taught me over 25 years ago. You are an amazing woman. Keep doing a great job at educating our young ones. You are the closest thing to a mother most of those children have. If i was still in DA that’s exactly where my boys would be going.
