In an effort to encourage shoppers to buy local during the holiday season, another edition of Buy Dominica is being held.

Buy Dominica Christmas Shopping 2013 is expected to take place at the Roseau Market from Friday 20th to Tuesday 24th December, 2013.

This is part of a campaign which was initiated by the Dominica Manufacturers Association and the Dominica Arts and Craft Producers Association in December 2012, in an effort to increase the sales of Dominican products and create a greater awareness of the public to support and appreciate them.

The event is also expected to be an opportunity for shoppers to interact with producers and to see the wide variety of products made in Dominica which are not always available on the market.

Speaking on the initiative earlier this year, President of the Dominica Manufacturers Association, Linford Gutherie, said that it was time that the thirst for international products be reversed.

“We should reverse the trend of high demand for foreign products. The interpretation of local in Dominica is something negative but I want to appeal to our consumers that the more we consume the local products and services, it’s the better we all are,” he said.

Manufacturers and artisans are encouraged to display goods of high quality which will satisfy the needs of the customers on the days of Buy Dominica Christmas Shopping 2013.

This is a great event, I am just sad that it wasn’t held earlier in time to send presents back to the states.

Are these guys kidding me. We all agree that the economy is about to bottom out and instead of making a plea to Skeritt for some of the millions he has been dishing out like rain, form a Mission and visit as many Caribbean Countries as possible to sell our products, them fellers are asking Dominicans who are very broke to buy local instead of foreign products. How can we buy what is produced by Dominicans when their are more Chinese businesses in Roseau selling most of the same products cheaper.

Because we need to stop thinking so short term. If we support local industry in the long run it will serve to keep money circulating inside the country instead of that money being filtered out to keep supporting external companies who have much better capabilities for production thus able to provide goods at cheaper prices. Shipping is also pretty much irrelevant to pricing since shipping in bulk makes it extremely profitable so companies able to produce large quantities through efficient factory processes can dominate markets globally. Think of how american companies outsource so many jobs (especially tech product companies like apple) since labour is cheaper in countries like china. We need to make the sacrifice and support local because we will all benefit in the long run

Bit of an unfortunate slogan, isn’t it? I would change that to “Buy back Dominica”!
