Five Coconut Cheese producers, which include three cottage industries and two schools, will compete for the best product from 9:00 a.m. on Friday 31st July, 2015 at the H.H.V. Whitchurch IGA Supercenter in Roseau.
The winners of the competition will take away monetary prizes ranging from $500.00 to $1,500.00.
The Coconut Cheese Competition is the culmination of a collaborative initiative organized by the Dominica Manufacturer’s Association (DMA) in partnership with students of the (ETHOS) Programme of the University of Dayton, Ohio, the coconut cheese producers, the AID Bank, the Ministry of Commerce, Enterprise & Small Business Development, DOMLEC, the Youth Development Division, H.H.V. Whitchurch and Co. Ltd, the OECS Competitive Business Unit and other stakeholders who, over the last ten weeks, pursued the possibilities, through research and development, of developing coconut cheese for the export market.
The project deemed the Industrialization and Commercialization of Coconut Products for Sustainable Economic Growth and Prosperity is part of the Dominica Manufacturers Association’s strategy to develop its linkages, in pursuance of Research and Development opportunities, with international academic institutions.
In 2014, the Dominica Manufacturers Association collaborated with the Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service Learning (ETHOS) Programme of the University of Dayton, Ohio through the emersion of four (4) students, in the field of Chemical & Mechanical Engineering and Business, at the Believers Multi -Purpose Cooperative in Woodford Hill, who are the main producers of virgin coconut oil on island.
This year the program was expanded to include coconut cheese for which Dominica Manufacturer’s Association is looking at the 12000 students enrolled at the University of Dayton as the first potential U.S. market for the products.
The competition is open to the general public and judging will be based on the people’s choice through tasting and by a panel of three judges.

People keep talking crap about tax locally produced confectioneries and sugar based items. if it have tax of coconut cheese and tambrind balls etc. People, please be informed that the tax is on imports. we do not import coconut cheese, tambrind balls or other locally made sweets and candies. The govt imports our sugar for us through DEXIA. There may be higher costs on that, and in turn the cost may be passed on to the consumer. but you are not expected to tax coconut cheese that is made locally. however there may be a price increase, or maybe not. that will be determined by the vendors who produce it.

coconut cheese competition, meaning that sweetie is good. They just said in the budget the populace suffering from diabetes due to intake of too much sweet things placing too much burden on the country’s health system and thus the sweetie tax is to help curtail the purchase of sweet things. So how is coconut cheese going to survive?

Renaming it Coconut Fudge would certainly help to get it accepted in the U.S student body market.
Coconut and Cheese in the same name, makes one stop and try to evaluate exactly what they would be eating, while a variation of the well known and enjoyable fudge would be easy to try.
The name ” coconut cheese” is unfortunate as there is nothing cheese-like in this product. Based on its composition and consistency it rightly belongs to class of candy known as a “fudge”. Therefore, I would agree that if this product is to attract attention beyond our shores, it should be marketed as Coconut Fudge.
At the same time, we should commend and encourage all those involved with this initative.

The word is Patent. And anyone who knows how to make coconut cheese can make it. Unless your recipe and process distinct. Its like KCF, their recipe is patented, but that didnt stop krispies or anyone for that matter from selling fried chicken.
