Collywood TV pulls out from Marpin

Junior Hart, owner of Collywood TV
Junior Hart, owner of Collywood TV

Jamaican/African production company, Collywood, has announced that after one year, it has ceased placing content on local cable company Marpin 2k4 due what it described as “unfair practices.”

In February last year, Collywood TV, said it will be airing content on Marpin channel 13, in hopes of “bringing to Dominican viewers movies, soap operas and reality TV made in Jamaica, Africa and Dominica.”

Back then, owner of Collywood, Junior Hart, said he was pleased to be in the Dominican market since he wanted “to cross-fertilize talent from Jamaica, Dominica with Africa and show case it to local and the international diaspora market.”

But one year on, it appears that the relationship between the two companies has soured and matters began unraveling between the two when Collywood wanted to renew its agreement with Marpin.

According to Hart, under the old agreement Marpin had exclusive rights to Collywood’s content but he wanted this amended under the new agreement whereby Collywood could share its content with other networks.

“Collywood agreed to sign for one year exclusive (with Marpin) with the intention to branch out after the term was up,” Hart said.

Furthermore Hart said he is amazed that the cable company wants to charge Collywood a fee to place its local programs on Marpin, “while on the other side, Marpin pays overseas service providers for their imported programs.”

He noted that Marpin should in fact pay Collywood  for its local programs like “Tenants” and the Dominican soap series, “Brothers” which Hart said “is just as good as Young and The Restless.”

Because of this, Hart is accusing the cable company of being unfair to Collywood’s local producers and local artists “by charging for local home grown contents to be shown on Marpin.”

“We believe that Collywood Dominican programs can stand up beside any overseas imported program that Marpin pays for. Why does Marpin want to stifle local programs by charging extortionate rates to local productions such as Collywood and other Dominican producers?” Hart asked.

Hart said Collywood will be launching a campaign against Marpin in an effort to have it “change its thinking towards local programs.”

DNO contacted Marpin Thursday on the matter and the company said the call would be returned.

Up to the time of publishing, DNO had not heard from Marpin.

i mean seriously people you keep on bashing everyone who tries to say something sensible, come stop it, (thought for you all) ever wonder why our country is so much behind in everything, our own people leave here and go over seas just to make a better life for themselves and seek better opportunities. Why? its only because we never give each other the chance we always discriminate, Investors come here to open opportunities no matter how small they are but yet we push them away, no wonder the economy is so tight right now. Remember we are a country that has so much to offer but yet it never moves beyond the port shores. HHmm its time we take time out and realise what we are doing? if there was something wrong with collywood ,soap opera why not bring in your concerns instead of saying it wasnt good and thanks they are going. It was in fact a good thing they brought here just needed a few editing thats all but it was in fact good. But one of these days when all investors stop come here we will all see how we will suffer, dont you see not even cruise ships that no longer want to come here and see how much we suffering now, its just the start dont worry unless we dont get our act together. Think about that

Culture is the way of life of a people. That is our local people and every episode relates to what ges on in society. As the people continue to act they will get better.

I realy enjoy looking at it instead of all the other American Soap Operas.

Collywood T.V. is crap. Mr. Hart acts like the local (Dominican) dramas are Emmy or Oscar worthy. That show needs a total overhaul. I tried look at the dramas a few times but alas, those were minutes of my life wasted I will never get back.

    1. The “actors” cannot act. They keep repeating the same statement for no reason. I believe those shows have no scripts. It seems an idea is thrown out and they just try to roll with it.

    2. Why do they shove the camera in the peoples face? We don’t want or need to see their pores.

    3. Why does Mr. Hart have to be in 95% of the scenes?

R.I.P. Collywood gone and totally forgotten.

i agree totally with you.i must say in the beginning i enjoyed it especially when they used to play the African music. but this program/soap opera or whatever it was, tenants was just too larwtaw. the women were LOUD and they seem to have had no script like you mentioned. yep they repeated alot of their statements and most of the time they made no sense. just arguing arguing arguing.in my opinion there was nothing positive about the women in this show. i for one is happy that its gone. marpin now find some good local programs to fill the spot. you have enough local shows, music, entertainment to fill the area. during carnival time play carnival related past events/shows etc, during christmas time pay christmas related activities, easter, independence, etc.i believe you guys have enough past recordings to make it happen.

  11. Let's be real
    February 22, 2013

Without a doubt. Collywood TV has brought something to Dominica. Local programming is so important to us as a culture and consumer. We need to stop stuffing US bling tv and unrealistic fantasy TV down the throats of our vulnerable and easily influenced population especially the youth. Let us for once look at people we can associate with and look at issues that are real to us for a change. Yes the acting, etc needs improvement but every oak tree was once an acorn. Lets us work to develop something that is our own. Let us develop something to export to our people overseas that puts a smile on their face and makes them think of home and being home. Lets look at the possibilities and opportunities to grow. Let Collywood be the beginning of an industry that spurs others to enter the arena. Lets stop using negativity as our primary tool to destroy all that is positive about Dominica. People need to look at the likes of Madonna etc and the first productions they were in etc then speak. Where is she now? I have seen many well produced and filmed movies from Hollywood with big budgets that are garbage. Lets give constructive feedback so the product grows or someone does it better. Sing it Daddy Chess – Forward we go.

well the public must share their critics in other for collywood to step up, it is all about the public, so the production management have to try to come up with something that will impress the public and then you will get a better feed back……………the public die nuh

Marpin take out Collywood on 13, now is just flip the channel “stuuuuppes, but dey take out Collywood man, stuuuupppes, but what i seeing der nuh, stuuupppess”.
Channel 8 and 9 have the same thing, 1 with good colour the other one with rice, channel 99 or one of those in the matrix deciphering colour codes all day.

By the way I like PBS but prefer Collywood. Even Romney tell Obama he would stop sponsoring PBS but my SS has to pay for it not true? And talking about quality local (live) broadcasting, tell Marpin to check itself first. I pay my bill monthly, no arrears, so I free to talk.

  13. my opinion
    February 22, 2013

now firstly i dont like the how the actors roles are, its like the they given an example and they just expand on it saying what they want, its like there’s no script! they dont have no can of acting classes, the only person i see with some can of potential is “m” if she gets some coaching she will be a great actress. is like the two British accent men are the only hot men in the “tenants”, is like you can just see there unprofessional. but am must congratulate them for having something like this in Dominica i know they will eventually improve. Marpin aself do make me vex cause i not putting SAT. alright!! Best of luck “Tenants”.

So collywood pulling out? but where is slick? slick was good and he was promising. Slick i hope you are receiving your royalties. I think Marpin should re consider. Every new innovation has to start somewhere and improvements will eventually come.Support it because its your’s. Everything is not for everyone but usually things are bigger than all of us. Nothing can please everyone but as long as you get positive feedback it means you made a difference in someone’s life.Change your mindset Dominicans and be the change that you want.

    COLLYWOOD OFFICIAL RELEASE
We have been looking at all your comments both positive and negative. What we have found in any great movement, you cannot please everybody. Dominica being a christian Island seems to have more negativity than positivity. Our CEO Mr Hart understands that it takes all sorts to make a world and each of us likes different things. People of DNO, we did not come to Dominica to be a hero, Mr Hart is investing in Dominican talent to take it on the international market. We are looking at all these comments and thank each person for their valuable comment, which we will consider. First let us tackle the issue of talenbt and so called bad ir terrible acting. We would be happy if persons saying that the acting in our soap series is bad or terrible, again this is a matter of personal taste…not everybody likes pork or chicken, or even beef, again it takes all sorts to build an Island. What Collywood have found challanging in Dominica. People are afraid to make changes. We have tried to work wih various people and allocate roles for them, but the problem is, many have no staying power and if we had left this unchecked, we would not have accomplished 24 episodes of Tenants and so far 8 episode of Brothers and various other productions due for release such as Kevins Tunnel. If one know this game, production takes time and its all very well people who have no idea of how this industry work, expects certain things to happen over night. In the beginning we went through 150 people via auditions and trials. Some of these people were not right for what we had in mind, hence why we have found some of them on DNO voicing their negative comments..we know exactly who they are. But thats to be expected, anybody would feel bitter if they have been rejected. We also know that some of our producers are throwing in their technical say…all that lighting was not right or shadows were in a certain scene and the editing was not right. Again this is to do with personal choice. Finally, Collywood was not thrown out by Marpin or booted out. Mr Hart made the decision to pull the service on Marpin Channel 13 due to Marpin increasing their price for the channel. Mr Hart thinks this is wrong for any local producer to be payinbg Marpin for its own contents. Marpin still wanted Collywood to stay on air, but with a price increase. This is the true facts as we have nothing to hide. We would also like to add. Collywood is hear to stay and will be going onto Mobile network/ IPhones, Tablets and Digital Platforms as in our Pay Per View. Marpin is just a very small fish to us in the ocean. Dominica will now change as our minds are focused abd we will not leave until our work has been accomplished. Hope this brings things in a better prospective for all DNO readers.

      February 22, 2013

If this is from the PR Dept, then I can see why people are pleased to see Collywood go. As a professional with an MA in Corporate Communications, I must say that this is not the kind of response that ANYONE trained in Public Relations and Communications would write. To say, as a PR professional that “Dominica being a christian Island seems to have more negativity than positivity” is really, really low. This PR Officer needS training or needs to go.

      • AY AY
        February 22, 2013

You should have tackled that and make a stronger argument… you know why? BECAUSE DOMINICANS ARE REALLY PORTRAYING DOMINICA TO HAVE MORE NEGATIVITY THAN POSITIVITY!!!! LIKE IT OR NOT! Because majority of Dominicans DO NOT LIKE CHANGE!.. WHO EVER THE PR IS give it to all you straight and direct and SOMETIMES THE TRUTH HURTS AND IT BITES AND IT IS HARD TO ADMIT! BUT THAT IS TRUE!
        1. They negatively give comments and try to get people away from what they’re doing instead of pushing them to improve.
        2. They constantly try to hold their peers and neighbors down (even if they talk nice to you in your face)
        3. They DO NOT LIKE CHANGE! Change come and you would swear and say is a bomb threat to Dominicans
        4. They constantly mind people business, the way people dress, talk, eat and sleep!
I CAN GO ON AND NO AND ON.. And I am Dominican and in my teenage years I used to do the same thing… WHY YOU ASK Because that is the environment I GREW UP IN! But I’m wiser now and more open-minded and accepting of everything that is positive and improving of the self and my environment. I Don’t care how someone else is dressed, they can go naked that is their business! I don’t care how someone act, that’s their personality and character as long as it is not a threat to me or those around that person. I do not care about all the little things I see dick, Tom and harry doing.. AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM IN DOMINICAN SOCIETY.. WE ALL NEED TO CHANGE IT and STOP BEING SO CLOSE-MINDED… GROW OUT OF THE OLD WAYS AND GET IN WITH THE NEW, WE ARE ALL WISE PEOPLE … START ACTING LIKE THAT!!

On the whole i think people are missing the point it not about the content or peoples personal tastes, Collywood did something that had not been done in Dominica, There are still channels that are Government owned that show old poorly pre recorded shows that are over ten years old, most other countries in the caribbean have there own networks or tv stations that show home produced content we see it all the time on some of the stations shown on Marpin, where else in the caribbean do you see Dominican produced content?
As With Most Things There has to be a starting point.

My good peeps, please remember media in general is about balancing the company’s bottom line, the desire to entertainment and a measure of enlightenment. Ultimately though, the biggest consideration to air or not to air is the almighty “Benjamin” a.k.a. – the dollars made – or profit turned. Claims that Marpin does not value local programming could certainly be open for debate. However, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt here and say their decision was based on a pure business decision. At the end of the day Marpin is in the game to air a product / service in a market where a return on their investment can be gained. In today’s competitive world of entertainment, the best way to keep good programs on the air is through loyal viewing. Unfortunately, Dominica does not have any public or corporate sponsored television alternative. All the best to the Collywood crew.

      February 21, 2013

I think everybody is missing the point here. Collywood was the one to not want to go forward with marpin unless they are being paid for their works. Dominica is the only place where you as a local content producer have to pay to show your content. Hellooooo people. it should be the other way around…so who pays the actors and actresses, producers, camera operators etc…how is the production company suppose to grow and survive?? are you people for real. That is so backward thinking. Collywood leave that nonesense Island and go to St Lucia..they will love the stuff you guys are doing and they will pay you for your contents or give you a channel free. I know that becuase I produce and they buy in my content. Dominica is so so backward.

OK, I was not too impressed with Collywood, but I think that we should treat local better. We should give a better and fair chance to improvement and quality. I think Collywood was a good local move to get better with times. I never understood the always “coming soon” which never arrives.

“Furthermore Hart said he is amazed that the cable company wants to charge Collywood a fee to place its local programs on Marpin, “while on the other side, Marpin pays overseas service providers for their imported programs.”

I must give my views on the collywood TV show, I think is a good move to put Dominica on the Tv map, but first he had to work in hand with those that are already on the acting scene, like me, he had to choose some people have them doing som script see if they are suitable for acting, How I look at ithe just pick up anybody and put them to act it have to take time practicing their scripts. and another thing the type of lanauge that the so cal actor use, and it look like my hart is puting straight how it is film no editing pieces, it is so bad I wonder if Mr Hart is sitting and watch it all over when they finish act Mr Hart you need to do a rehearsal with your actors, if only you take your time, to do the editing it will be a good soap opera.

To be quiet honest at first when i started watching “Tenants” i thought is was pure crap. But as entertainment nights would have it “Tenants” became such a enjoyable show. Yes, it is done in Dominican dialect but in truth and in fact the whole storyline is what actually happens in Dominica.
I was really sad when the season ended and now that Marpin has kicked Collywood out, it’s a sad situation.

    • Fren
      February 21, 2013

Hey Sa Sa… Hey Jessie is not produced by Marpin. Disney Channel is well known children station with different programs. you talking bout spongebob sqaure pants that have more subliminal messages than ever. Are you seriously a retared or are you serious about your comment? ohh please! I would love to see Colly wood progress into soemthing better but as i said, we should take every dissapointment as a blessing. take a sit mr. hart and revise what you are doing. in the mean time… MARPIN 2k4 to the WOLRD!

The caption doesn’t accurately capture what seems to really have happened. Did Collywood pull out or did Marpin refuse to renew the agreement?

    • Riceman
      February 21, 2013

Collywood Pulled out. I listen ed to Mat this morning. Mr Hart want Marpin to start paying local producers for local programs..Thye do not want to pay instead they want Collywood to pay to show its programs on marpin..thats not right. READ PEOPLE AND UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING..THAT IS WHY COLLYWOOD PULLED THE PLUG NOT MARPIN!!!! COLLYYWOOD PULLED OUT AND COLLYWOOD DONT WANT TO RENEW CONTRACTS. The diggers on hear is trying to say that marpin booted out Collywood. I listened to Mat this morning and Marpin wanted to re-sign the deal for another year but they wanted to raise the price on Collywood 300% so Collywood decided to pull out from the deal as Marpin pays for overseas contents form USA but want to charge to put local programs to be played on Marpin. Hope yu all get it now…Boyyyyyyy yu all slow!!!

    February 21, 2013

Personally I am not impressed with Collywood TV. Further, I notice that Collywood TV has been pulling content from YouTube and playing movies and I am not certain that they have permission from the authors of those works to do that. If they don’t have permission to show the work of other people on the channel then sooner or later MARPIN would end up having to find money to pay for infringement of intellectual property rights. The only thing I will miss is some of the music. Good bye Collywood. Go and reinvent yourself somewhere else. MARPIN have enough coshonie. We don’t need more.

What do yiou lot csll good acting in Dominica…Pleasssss dont tell me the acting in Dominican Theatre Arawak House of Culture..where is the professional actors..I went there when I was on holiday it was rubbish..a play by Alwin Bully about some jamaica story in kingston..sorrrrry if that is what you call good acting, I am up to 12 episode of Tenants series on the Collywood Pay Per View…my friends are all buying the episode to view..great stuff, the best to come out of Dominica..we still cant believe this is Dominican production…It took a jamaican to come in and show yu all how to create your own stuff lol. Keep it coming Collywood, we the caribbean abraod are loving it…them people wont buy nothing, they just want everything free.

So you want me to believe that Mr Hart cannot pay MARPIN but it can afford to pay royalties on all the movies and other work they have been reproducing on the channel? If Mr. Hart had the money to do that then he would surely be able to afford to make a bigger investment in the local programmes. While I applaud his efforts re the local programmes the quality was crap. Let’s be honest. If it was Alwin Bully or somebody else producing the quality of work that I have seen on Collywood people like you would have all kinds of negatives to say. Be honest.

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE??????? DO SOME OF YOU REALLY THINK THAT THE LOCAL PROGRAMMES ON cOLLYWOOD WAS ANYTHING TO SHOUT ABOUT? Tenants?????? Brothers?????? Poor language usage? Good storyline but poor production.Amateur actors. Mr Hart should have worked with Steve Hyacinth or Alex Bruno. Then we would have some good local stuff. I am all for local programs but Collywood. hmmmm poor language usage ? Then where would the Dominican flavor come in. If they were speaking properly then all you would say they yanking to much.It just hard to please Dominica people point blank. For once in a while support all you own. That why nothing really last in that place because to much negativity.I am sure with very hearing they see there flaws and with time I believe Mr Hart and his team will improve on the area they need too . We don’t have anyway acting school in Dominica and we have local people acting so what all you expected Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt give those people a break. All you have such to say about poor acting Why don’t you go audition for a role and showcase your Oscar performances.

I dont think Collywood needs little Marpin in Dominica. I know that Collywood has an international infrastructure a global distribution networ and also they have launched their Pay Per view Network where they are placing their products for the international market. http://www.collywoodcinemas.com I dont think people realize that Collywood is w ell established international oragnization in Africa and the UK. That is why Hart cab pull the plug on Marpin..you will hear from Collywood soon…something bigger and better is coming..Bless

    February 21, 2013

In all honesty, Mr Hart is tooting his own horn. There is no quality in any way, shape, or form on those “soap operas”. You see the camera persons, you get all kinds of feedback, the lighting is TERRIBLE, the language is neither here nor there (really can’t mix broken English with proper phrases and terms sprinkled here and there) and as for the acting, or the lack thereof… It’s a start but there are a lot of things I think that could be rectified to improve the shows at least a little. The script on the other hand… the actors look like they just winging the entire thing. stupse.

    • L2
      February 21, 2013

There is no script. Mr. Hart gives them a scenario and they ‘act’ it out. And don’t talk about wardrobe, make-up and lack of compensation for acting.

    • Mouth of Dom
      February 21, 2013

So as a Dominica..why dont you start your own production..I understand that for the first time in Dominican history Tenants is an ongoing soap series. my question is this. Why in all of Dominican histrot nobody out of Dominica has attempted or achieved what Collywood Tv has achieved in a few months or 1 year..yet yu all good a barking off what is wrong and full of critism instead oif supporting your own actor actresses…Alex Bruno..why did he not get a deal with Marpin and put on Dominican soaps…I read all of those negative minds comments going back from Collywood was starting out in Dominica…they had a press interview on Marpein and they acually carried out their promise..yu can shoot off your mouth but I knwo one of my friends are now got work with Collywiood and wil be geting paid their royalties..so how bad can that be. These negative people on here is missing the point as usual…this is baout Collywood pressing Marpin to pay our actor and actresses for their work..I dont see anythung wrong with that.

      • Gimme a Break!
        February 21, 2013

If there was place that people could review the shows, you’d hear the exact same things you’re reading here. On other series, you have the first episode, the pilot, and that makes or breaks the series but in this case, it never really had some way to receive feedback from viewers. That is sub-level entertainment to say the least. I hear what you’re saying and it’s awesome that people are getting jobs and yes, but they should be paid if they produced anything worth paying for. I’m talking about the actual content. From since those shows started, nothing has been improved on in my opinion… MY OPINION… so think of all these “negative comments” and “barking” as constructive criticism instead.

Just for pointers. “Noise” can be caused by many things. but the best example is, the untidy method of cable processing on SAT’s Trunk lines.I swear, that is one big mess for any technician to work with. Where as Marpin’s lines are tidier, hence less loss of channels as compared to SAT. lazy work.

When every1 switches over to SAT, its gonna get more expensive and worse off, they cant even support the load D/ca customers will provide.

I await the Marpin response since Junior Hart, smartly, has beaten them to the punch.

  57. Aahh, shame
    February 21, 2013

I think its a shame. Comparisons to Young & Restless is stretching it but there was definitely room to grow. I think some of the actors were one dimentional and too much stupessing and hand waving,(particularly the female actors) instead of using appropriate dialoge. I also think perhaps the Producer, Hart,(and his brother??) should stick to the production side of things and look for alternative lead actors. Despite my comments, I enjoyed the channel and hope Marpin can renegotiate and come to some mutual agreement with Colywood.

Junior Hart is a big joke just like the whole Collywood tv. I suspect marpin was just waiting for the contract to end to give them the boot for them not to get in any legal mess with any African/ Jamaican producers/artists which may want to sue Collywood. The only thing I personally enjoy on Collywood is hearing the girl from Grandbay speak. She can go far, but not with Collywood. Where is price it, text it, win it again? SMH.
