DAIC to go tête-à-tête with IPO Commission

The Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC) will host a luncheon on Thursday November 10th, at which the Integrity in Public Office Commission, IPO, will brief the private sector and provide updates on the status of public integrity in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

As you are well aware, the IPO is mandated to safeguard civil society from integrity issues likely to affect the performance of a certain category of public officials.

Recently, there have been a number of allegations of integrity compromise leveled at MPs and other members of the political directorate.  The role of the IPO Commission in these allegations has been unclear.

The private sector has also expressed concern with Dominica’s falling rating in the Corruption Performance Index published by Transparency International.  Dominica’s score has gone down from 6, 5.9 and 5.2 in 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively. The impact of political integrity on business confidence will thus be explored.

This “tête-à-tête” with the private sector is an ideal opportunity to quiz the Commission on their effectiveness and to be updated on the status of recommendations made by the Commission to afford them more “teeth”.  Some of those recommendations are:

– Amendment to the First and Third Schedules of the ACT;

– Empower the Commission to extend the deadline for filing declarations;

– Empower the Commission to investigate on its own volition;

– Protection of complainants who make good-faith reports of acts of corruption;

– Intrusions into the exercise of the commission’s functions;

– Provision to cause declaration of Trust Property;

– “Whistle Blower” protection.

The luncheon will be held at the Waterfront Restaurant, Fort Young Hotel, Victoria Street, Roseau on Thursday November 10th, 2011 commencing at 12:30pm to 2:00pm.

Cost per luncheon ticket is $100.00 and tickets are available from our offices.  Ticket price includes lunch and dessert.

    There’s nothing better than that, so let’s see from who most of the questions will be asked.

    For a moment I took this seriously but when I came to the time alloted an hour and half that just doesn’t make sense; we can’t be serious. I would want to suggest a public forum in the Arawak house of culture and according to our entertain friends from 3pm until…. we have explored all avenues; but over or following lunch and in an hour and half thats a joke given the concerns and the agenda.

    What’s going to come out of this? DAIC, IPO, Government, more of the same…sorry, no confidence in DAIC to bring any time of sanity to what’s going on on the ground

    A lethal combination it is . Another effort to block the truth form a different angle . Here are a few hints –The IPO said it would investigate a “special favor” activity that is related to the Villa (2) Remember that the DAIC name was also mentioned in some of the Villa scrambling. Remember how many members of DAIC resigned?There is always a plan behind the plan

    We always knew the outcome of a Tom and Jerry cartoon. We know the outcome – just talk talk and more talk. No action !Government minister clearly lying about their assets; accumulated assets cannot be validated with legal income income; senior counsel cannot hold a straight story – gift or purchase.
    Here is a suggestion DNO- why not run a poll to determine the confidence of the people in the IPO.
