DBS gets new manager

At last the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation has a new manager.

In his first introduction to staff Thursday afternoon, Brian Meade told workers he is prepared to lead them as professionals and said, “You’re either with me, or you’re a terrorist”.

He told staff that his vision is to take the company to another level and that they “cannot afford to stay back.”

He commended the DBS employees for professionalism and vowed to help them improve in that area. “I observe you in and out of the station and what I have heard and what I have seen, I’ve been very encouraged,” he said.

Meade’s appointment follows the dismissal of former manager Mariette Warrington over claims of misconduct. Shermaine Green Brown, Programme Director at DBS, acted in the position for one year and a half.

Brian Meade is employed on a two year basis with the corporation and his contract may be renewed subsequently.

Aurelius Jolly, Chairman of the DBS Board of Directors, said it is hoped that the new manager will be working “very seriously at cementing all our differences, our problems at this corporation.”

DBS is observing 40 years of operation.

am happy that dbs got a new manager dbs has a lot work that has not been done yet i.e. their fm converge is poor their website is not even functional I trust the manager will look into this matter because their are places in Dominica you cant hear dbs at all, & we depend on marpin & sat to hear dbs its a shame, if something goes wrong with those TV stations how are we going to hear dbs?
before DBS was herd all around 90& of Dominica on AM & FM now DBS sounds like an experimental broadcast station in terms of coverage. the technicians at DBS needs to work harder to move that station forward, but the end of the day it all up to the new manager to fix those things.

Mr. Meade – that statement was not a nice one to begin with – “either you are with me or you are a terrorist” – That is not professional.

However – i wish you all the best and much success.

Well, Mr. Meade is right there with the DA chat, because that word “terrorist” is thrown about my Dominicans like it’s a local slang. Recently I visited the island and commented on something I didn’t like about customer service at one location, and someone asked what was my problem, and if I was a terrorist. I had no comment.

    • December 4, 2011

In these times regardless who the person is cannot afford to be careless like MEADE was he is the one that lack professional tack whenever one starts a new job it’s very important to get to know the employees conduct interviews with each one and by doing so you will know where and how plans for turning the Company around will materialize one should go into a new position or job with an open mind the employees already know you are the BOSS I hope MEADE will never use those words to discredit anyone again I do believe he should apologize to the staff of DBS immediately for by his action he went into the position with a chip on his shoulder.

I think the new graduates are envied. They say in one breath that they encourage people to go out there and get trained, but their action speaks volume.

Mr. Prime Minister, are you infact jealous of young persons coming back from studies that may have great potential to out shine you.

This is my only conclusion, because from all angles once persons come back you vex with them.

Why Mr. P.M. speak the truth.

    • December 4, 2011

Well said and I do agree any one with a much higer level of education than the PM as a DOMINICAN will not find meaningful employment in DOMINICA and it is time those graduates come to grip with the facts that’s why outsiders will come in and take jobs that our people should have how do we change that trend we got to change all systems.

Mr Meade’s attitude will not help to cement the differences and problems at DBS. As a matter of fact, his attitude has created a monster and has failed him big time!!!

He cannot work in isolation!!! We, the Dominican people will be keeping a vigilant eye on what unfolds at DBS over the next few weeks

    Very disturbing!!!

I will continue to lamnt on the fact that this Government headed by this Prime Minister does not have the confidence of Dominica youthful university graduates, this is a man who is yet another retired individual, card carrying member of the labor party who in the 21st century can bring no new ideas to DBS. what of the persons who just got degrees in mass communications? am i to believe that they are too qualified for this position? or the knowledge that they have obtained is too advance for DBS? Young people please take note of how this government under this youthful Prime Minister does not recognise the values that you all have posses through your hard studies that enable you all to have valuable degrees. Soon your door bells will be ringing for your votes in support of this youthful PM

  18. POSITIVELY DOMINICAN
    December 2, 2011

Very irresponsible and unprofessional statement. Mr Brian Meade, this is a serious threat to the semployees of DBS. Apologising would be the best action, and you should serve with grace and humility! Do not be too pround to acknowledge when you have made a serious blunder!

No man is an island and you can’t run the affairs of DBS, if you do not have the support and co-operation of your staff. A motivated and dedicated team is indeed required to run this corporation, and you have just destroyed this trust and team spirit!
Your staff will find you extremely difficult to approach. Being autocratic will not help to strategize the affairs of DBS.
A true leader cannot exist if he does not get to win the trust of others.
A true leader knows the importance of earning respect rather than demanding.
A true leader should work to earn the respect of his team members and reciprocate the same

Bryan, you were good at Radio Antilles, on the island of Montserrat, good at ZAL Television on the island of Antigua, I see no reason why you cannot serve your purpose appropriately at BDS Radio.

However, the ” if you are not with me you are a terrorist,” is a bit shocking!

      • December 2, 2011

I agree that his choice of words were not appropriate, however, I am very optimistic, that his choice of words today, or yesterday will not affect the way in which he conduct himself in dealing with his subordinates.

People chang most of the time; however unless he has changed dramatically,in characteristics; his staff can look forward to him working in harmony with them.

The least the staff can do is simply corporate with him.

I am sure that Bryan knows that his success depends to a great extent on his subordinates, I doubt he will do anything to screw up his success.

Yes he is from Montserrat, he was one of my favourite news person they think that they are better than others Caribbean people, I can remember in the 80s and 90s the way they treated Dominicans in Montserrat calling us refugees and this man coming to Dominica and calling our people terrorist, for sure them people from Montserrat would run he out, we cannot allow all dick tom and harry living their country coming to DA insulting our people

Dominicans open you all eyes skerrit care less about you all, as far as i can see outsiders are the ones who will be running this island just a matter of time, this is a clap in the face for our Mr Green and the others shame on Skerrit and his administration

      • December 3, 2011

Please, do not say I say, nonetheless, the surname Mead is distinctly Montserratian!

If the surname, is not Dominican, ask yourself, how come Brian Mead is related to Ron Green, of UWP fame. What does it matter anyway where he was born: you might be surprised; Leave the man alone, Dominica owes all of us a living.

The fact that he is related to Ron Green, could mean that he was born in Dominica, or Ron Green was born in Montserrat, which one do you chose, take your pick!

I can tell you now that you are confused because Ron Green is absolutely Dominica born, turn American, illegally served in Edison James administration while been a citizen of the United States.

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

        How about that?

Jacob, Brian Mead is by whatever means as much Dominican as you are, believe it or not, the man is home, and he is not going anywhere!

Welcome home Brian, I wish I had the courage to return, time may have already past me by.

Tone or not, the words are unfortunate as they do not motivate.

The words in question have connotations in today’s political climate that are negative
and tend to polarize people. You are either for or against me. Polarization solves nothing.
You only have to look at the current political situation in Washington
to concur that such a situation achieves nothing fruitful.

Its tough to instill professionalism in staff if you at the top are not professional.

Broadcasting and journalism are mainly about words and the use of right words.

Tone or not these words hinder more than they help.

Mr. Meade ought to withdraw his statement referenced terrorism and apologise to the staff of DBS. This is not how you seek to motivate and get the best from your staff. It is an insult to infer that your staff are terrorists if they don’t agree with you.

Hi all, Brian Meade loves to tell a good joke and loves comedy. He made us laugh when he worked at Radio Antilles as a reporter, announcer and sales manager. So I know he meant it in a jovial way. The younger ones amongst us don’t know him so they think he meant bad. I think he’s a wonderful choice and is Dominican.

      • December 3, 2011

Brian loves to tell a good joke, what if i used the word to a person or past by a police officer and say that i am a terrorist what would be the outcome, Brian knows that whenever people hear the word terrorist they are on edge why would he used the term, there is no way in hell Brian would go to the USA, UK etc and used that word in a business and staff, he knows exactly what would be the consequences

That would only make sense if he was coming with a different approach. I wonder what my friends Steven, Shermain and Brian are thinking!!! Will they just seat there and take this crap?

That was uncalled for….the man did not choose to be born in Montserrat. My children are born out of Dominica, but they are Dominican citizens, as I made sure to see to it that they are recognized as such since they were born. However his “terroristic” comment makes me wonder what kind of terrorist he himself is! What a way to start your new job!
