Dominica 41 globally in perceived levels of corruption

Caribbean ranking of perceived corruption by Transparency International

Dominica has been ranked 9th in the region and 41st in the world in perceived levels of corruption according to a report released Wednesday by Transparency International.

The annual report gives countries higher scores for lower levels of perceived public sector corruption.

Dominica’s score was 58 with a global ranking of 41, as opposed to the global ranking of 44 in 2011.

The index score goes from 0, meaning a country is perceived as highly corrupt, to 100, meaning it is perceived as very clean.

“Looking at the Corruption Perceptions Index 2012, it’s clear that corruption is a major threat facing humanity,” Transparency International wrote in a release. “Corruption destroys lives and communities, and undermines countries and institutions. It generates popular anger that threatens to further destabilize societies and exacerbate violent conflicts.”

The report reveals that Barbados has the lowest level of corruption in the Caribbean (score 76 with a global ranking of 15) while Haiti has the highest (score 19 or 165 global ranking).

The Bahamas and St. Lucia are tied in second place for the lowest level of corruption in the region at 22 globally (score 71), according to the report.

A total of 176 countries and territories worldwide were ranked.

The writing is on the wall, Dominica is high on the corruption list, and just drop by a mere three percent. Corruption is a serious issue for Dominica as is the case of other Caribbean states. When there is any perceived corruption well investors and donors will be afraid to trust the country.
For too long corruption talk has been going on and on and on in Dominica and little has been done to tackle the issue from Top to Buttom. So many allegations of corrupt practices in Dominica and image there is hardly an enquiry into these issues. Those from the top walk away smiling with all kinds of bad behaviours.
The bad thing is that supporters of various parties will put their necks on a chop board just to defend their leaders. wherever such mentality is alive well corruption will always be swept under the table. One suspect that things are so easy in Dominica that folks are just doing as they please. For Dominica to regain its good reputation as was in the times of mamo, well there has to be some serious cleaning up from head to toes. Those who are involved in corruption, investigate them, try them and send them where they belong: jail jail, jail. And the state should seize all their assets and so forth…. Unless a no nonsense approach is taken to deal with corruption, well Dominica will continue to get worst scores.
Its Just sickening to read about so many allegations of corruption in Dominica- left, right and center, and not one – not one is taken seriously or brought before the courts…. awahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Something is just not adding up, or they playing games with the numbers and power ball.Perceived? Perceived? Perceived? Perceived corruption in Dominica? God help Dominicans and Dominica! But God is not corrupt en! Magway saaaaaaaaaa!
The Government should call a rally or just give Dominicans some free up gifts like no paying for barrels and stuff for xmas. These are ways they can say thanks to Dominicans for their faithfulness and love. Or they can give ham and turkey and hampers. Just place loads of hampers all over the place and let them people take a few… Or just send charlo on radio to chat chat chat and wishh merry christmas to the Nashionnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!(Nation!)Next year labahhhh will easee the Tenshionnnnnnnnnn(tension) with acshionnnnnnnn(action). 41 globally for perceived corruption, one wonders, what’s Dominica’s score globally for development?
Oh The Government should call a news years Day rally to just celebrate their achievements for 2012: 41 one of everything or 41 thousand dollars worth of free drinks and plenty food and stufff: red plates, cups, tents and stuff: call it a red fete! Red sewo! Everything in Red! call the sewo: Oh they say we corrupt Eh!” so let us party labaahhhh styleee! Doh forget the campaign song en: red plastic bag: something happening!

I don’t think anyone in Dominica knows how to deal above the board. we are bred with corruption in our blood it would seem.

This should be a wake up call for all Dominicans, especially those back home. Doing the right thing, help develop your country and do not wait for others to do for you which invert brings greed that leads to corruption. Everybody wants to get rich quick without working. Well that’s the answer ” PERCEIVED CORRUPTION” .

Old people always say that persons call people what they are because they are a certain way, they see others in that way as well

I too, I’m against corruption;and if such corruption exist, it must be stopped. But according to Leeward Islanders, sometimes “there’s more in the mortar than the pistle.” Most West Indian countries don’t tell you of negative things about their islands/countries (Especially Antiguans, Jamaicans & Barbadians). Have you forgotten about the Jamaican woman raped by the Barbadian police, including a police woman? Even the Opposition tried to cover it up.
If a wife says anything negative about her husband, all her neighbours believe it.__ Those Dominicans who wouldn’t mind bringing the country to it’s knees just to defeat Skerrit, have providid the wood, paille fig, kerosine and match; so floks from other countries are just striking the match. AGAIN, THE KEY WORD IS “PERCEIVED.”

“Dominica’s score was 58 with a global ranking of 41, dropping from 44 in 2011.”
This is NOT written properly. It should not read “…dropping from 44…” We are talking about rank here, so there was not a drop, there was an increase in rank to 41 from 44. RANK 1 means very clean as the number increases the countries become more corrupt. Score on the other hand, 0 means very corrupt, as the number increases the countries become very clean. Denmark for example is RANKED 1 but has a SCORE of 90. It is the cleanest country. Dominica has not ‘dropped’, it has moved up in rank.

    • Shameless
      December 5, 2012

41 , 44 or 1000 we should not be on the list. Dca is too small for us to be in a category with the likes of Nigeria; http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/corruption-index-fg-appeals-to-media-nigerians/132646/

Making excuses will not help us.

      Assertive, NOT Agressive!

      • December 5, 2012

        @Shameless

I agree with you here! I have always said that Dominica is way, way, way, too small to be in the same category with those giant countries, like the USA and the others.

The USA, for example, has a population of over three hundred million people, divided into 52 states. Even if the claim of 70,000 people in Dominica was correct, we still have 1 person in Dominica to 41,000 persons in the USA. How do they decide, that 1 person alone, can be more corrupt than 41,000 persons put together?

That is why I will always say, all of those surveys are senseless and fallible. One of those good days will come for man to realize that he is not God, and most of them will never become like Him, because God would rather choose a donkey, than to allow human wisdom in His work. God has said that human wisdom is fallible, and also: No flesh will glory in His presence,

        @GreenTree

If you read the news article you will notice that cleanest goes up to 100. So Dominica at 44 in 2011 was cleaner than 41 in 2012. The three cleanest countries which are Denmark, Finland and New Zealand scored 90. Haiti is at 165, read what is said about that country.

      • December 6, 2012

I should have written 1 person alone in Dominica, to about 4300 persons put together in the United Sates—that is to say 70,000 people in Dominica to 300,000,000 people in the USA.

It is just too bad that the majority of our people are willing to accept whatever the labels which are plastered on us by outsiders who do not even know of our existence.

      • ???????????
        December 6, 2012

Shameless do you understand what you are writing? We are on the list in the upper range of 50 – 100. We moved from 44 to 41. What are you talking about we should not be on the list. It is you who do not have an understanding of what you are reading. The higher you are the more clean you are in layman’s term.

Can you imagine that Liz4jesus leave in Canada for 40 years and yet so ignorant and gullible. The report is presented with an index- a measurable quantity based on one or More data and references. Again it is a index sakwais boowik.
As always Liz: Stop your hypocrisy

This is the same Woman who compared data from Canada and the USA to make excuses for the 1 % salary increase by the Dominica government.
