Dominica continues to gain international recognition with The Huffington Post naming the island among the 10 best whale watching destinations around the world.

This comes on the heels of the island being recognized by international heavyweights such as National Geographic, Yahoo! Travel and ShermanTravel for its natural beauty and ecosystem.

The Huffington Post article states, “Scuba divers already know this remote Caribbean island thanks to its brilliant coral reefs, magnificent sea life, and bubbling underwater hot springs. But the island recently earned a new title, of ‘Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean,’ which launched this eco-friendly destination to a whole new level.”

The Huffington Post is a media giant in the world of politics and society and is read by millions of people around the world.

Dominica is in the top 5 dive destinations in the world (i stand corrected on this one), now we are in the top 10 eco destinations & top 10 whale watching destination in the world. Now my humble input is that, with all the other countries that we are compared with, our only draw back is air access. I’m not hearing the ministry of tourism or the mininster saying anything on these arcolades. I know that simon walsh is very vocal on air access. what is the discover authority doing to capitalize on these? I would like to ask, is there an advertising campaign in the making to further boost these ratings.
Let’s ponder abit, The land was purchased in the late 90’s to build an international airport, we got assistance from venezuela, & the e.u we could at list level the area.Instead we allowed the same people that the land was purchased from to return back unto these lands because we can’t afford. We have turned around & developed M/hall.( WHICH BY THE WAY IS ONLY VIABLE FOR A FEW YEARS)
At least we could have leveled the area. If we don’t try how do we know that we will fail, however, we cannot put failiure on the front burner of our minds. Whatever, the mind conceived it can be achieved.
M/hall has been upgraded, has there been an increase in flights? Can i leave England or Carlifonia & get into Dominica the same day, to enjoy a 5 day vacation?(That’s all the vacation i have left for now). Air access means convenience.
Eg. Discover Dominica advertises a 7 day vacation stint for the nature lovers. Dive packages, kubuli trail hikes, whale watching tours & relaxation in the hot springs. & 2 days out of my vacation I have to travel just to reach my holiday destination? Why can’t i start my 7 day vacation at the holiday destination itself? well sir /madame, the inconvenience is air access.
I think right now we as a nation have to really make up our minds as to what is it that we as a NATION REALLY WANT.
We need to start thinking outside the box.
Let us open an AIR ACCESS account. 1 dollar for every dominican abroad. As we call them, the DIASPORA. Let US CONTRIBUTE to that account. Every month 1 dollar of whatever currency that we are being paid in. That is to go towards building our air access. We have ambassadors all over the World, time to put them to work. Who can put more then fine. If it’s a dollar then that’s ok. But we are doing more lip service than actual work.
And let us capitalize on these ratings so we can improve on our standard of living in Dominica.

Folks, it is plain to see that we are getting all these accolades and we do not even have an international airport. Doesn’t it make you think that an international airport is not as cricital to our succes as we think?

I say we should focus on rebuilding the road network, the hospital, hotels, parks, taking care of the litter, the rivers, build little sitting and relaxing areas and all other things that would support the ecotourism product. Then when we are good and ready to welcome jetloads of people that’s the time to build the airport.

Dominica is sure among the top 10 best whale watching destination and that’s a fact. The last time I went whale watching I saw 14 whales and it was phenomenal. So fly away on a tangent all the haters who can’t accept the natural amenities of beautiful D/ca and attempt to turn them sour with politics.

Everytime I log on ” Dominica named the best or among the best”. Well I am convinced that there needs to be stellar marketing by the tourism folks and in addition something needs to be done to have UNHINDERED air access to Dominica. All the other islands know for a fact ( Antigua, SVG, SLU, Grenada etc) That is why they will never encourage the folks in power to go that route. People I am not talking anything grand but something that can accommodate Jet passenger crafts. WE HAVE FOR TOO LONG CONPLAINED ABOUT IT MAY NOT BE ECONOMICALLY FEASIBLE!!!! But yet the rest of the world leaves us behind!!! KEEP THE ISLAND A NATURE HAVEN BUT LET US MAKE IT SO THAT PEOPLE CAN COME..

This is such great news for DOMINICA.. Lately DA has been getting a lot of international recognition..
It’s up to the citizens and the government of DA to capitalize on that.
