DOMLEC investigates island wide blackout

power cutDominica sole Electricity, DOMLEC, has launched an investigation in what is being described as an ‘island wide blackout’ on Wednesday.

Just before 11:00 am, the whole island was left without power and according to the company’s PRO, Adina Bellot-Valentine the incident ‘was rather unfortunate.’

“We are still investigating as to what may have caused that power outage. It is unfortunate that we had another power outage after having one on Saturday evening,” she said.

In a report on Kairi FM, Valentine stated that staff had been working feverishly to ensure that the power was restored.

However Dominica News Online (DNO) later understood that power was restored to the entire island.

Valentine thanked customers for their patience and understanding during the power cut.

Dominica News Online (DNO) also understands that an accident which occurred in the Tan Tan area causing the death of a man on Tuesday night also resulted in the lost of power in several communities in the north of the island.

I do hope that DOMLEC employees and Dominicans in general, are taking note of what is being played out in at the Canadian owned Barbados Light and Power Company.
Coming to a Utility Company near you.

  4. Compensation DOMLEC?
    April 30, 2015

Is it true that persons on pay as you go lost a lot of credit because of the outage. If this is true, DOMLEC should make a public apology and PUBLICLY explain what compensation would be given to these many customers.

Adina, McKenzie, we await your word on this.

How can you lose credit? When the power goes out, the meter stops whether it’s payg or post payment.

Electricity is not always reliable. This is a worldwide situation. One never knows when there will be a power outage.
Twice on Saturday at a four-hour interval the electricity in the area I reside in Toronto went off. Fortunately, it did not last long. Consider traffic chaos at that time.
Imagine people are cooking, baking, doing laundry, etc and the power goes off.
Just imagine when in an elevator and the power goes off. This could last for hours, all day and/or night. Emergency elevator maintenance must get them out. Consider the time it will take to rescue those people.
What is also annoying and frustrating in this digital age, clocks, microwaves, telephones, TV, etc. must be reprogrammed/reset. So much for progress and digital service.
Yesterday I heard power went off in another area. This is all we have been hearing, power outage in some areas.
Keep your lamps, candles and flashlights close at hand in case there is a power outage when it is dark.

One Saturday afternoon while at the grocery store, a power outage occurred. The digital cash registers were inoperable. It was a bright and sunny day. We waited for a while but the power did not return. We had no alternative but to leave our groceries in the grocery carts and walk out. How disappointing. Due to this the store lost some funds that day.
I recall one Sunday afternoon there was a similar occurrence in the area where I reside which affected residents and stores, the latter which were opened. I heard on the news that the driver of a vehicle ran into an electricity poll which caused a wide area to be without power for hours.
It is not an easy and fun time when there is a power outage and while the meal is being prepared. It has to be abandoned. All we can state, such is life and disappointments of life.
I suppose we should be prepared for power outages but we never are.
This is to console you. Dominica is not alone. :)

If business’ were smart they would be able to convert to the old way of doing business without machines and computers. Otherwise, they will be in for a rude awakening when the globalist shut down all of the electronic devices that they have made everyone so dependent upon. People who don’t know the old ways are going to be dead in the water. Get you pens, calculators and receipt books ready.

Could this be linked to the increase in solar flares from the sun and global warming that is causing the first few months to be the hottest since 1880?

I lived in the states right near the power plant. Our current in a wide area went out much more often than in DA.

Maybe Domlec making too much profit but fail to invest some in those old generators which they are not replacing.

Is there really anything new here with DOMLEC with their half a customer service when it comes to delivering a dependable electrical service.
I know that we cannot have 3 and 4 electrical companies challenging DOMLEC because of the size of the population. However :( I think it is high time that customers get compensation as opposed to that thankless and generic thank you ( thanked customers for their patience and understanding during the power cut) they keep repeating whenever customers are ripped off.

Has anyone ever though just how much DOMLEC cost the Dominican economy with such below par energy service. How is Dominica ever to go forward with such poor energy reliability.
This seems to be a perpetual problem which has not been solved. This has been going on ever since I could say goo goo gaa gaa,, now I speak the language of an adult in their 30s and DOMLEC still speaks a language where your are guaranteed to defrost your refrigerator at least 2 a month all thanks to…

    • April 30, 2015

Agreed, Trevor. People respond best to things that hit their wallets. The deal should be, “You cut our power, we cut your profit.”

For compensation, the Law or DOMLEC’s regulations may be some hours of power outage. You should talk to DOMLEC about that.
If also your computer system was affected and obviously it was, you should also talk to your internet provider for a credit.
