DPSU and government could return to negotiating table on salaries

Letang

The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) and government could be heading for another round of salary negotiations soon.

The matter is now at a standstill and the DPSU is concerned, General Secretary Thomas Letang has pointed out.

“The position was that negotiations would have continued pending the outcome of the classification exercise. So we are concerned and we will make our concerns known to the government. If it means that we may have to recommence negotiation that may be something that we might ask government to consider,” he said.

Letang noted that DPSU officials will meet to discuss and take a unified decision on the matter “and our position may very well be that we will have to reopen negotiation.”

While I agree that it’s time for the government to do right by their public servants. I have to say that public servants are too ‘twete’. When they had to stand up and make a statement they didnt. I mean, government has had salary increases for their ministers and advisors, they keep hiring ‘advisors’, ‘ productivity consultants’ (whatever the hell that means), under public servants noses and they stay there quiet, scared to open their mouths. They are so politically blinded that when the DPSU takes a decision on their behalf, they back out saying that Letang is making this thing political. You think in places like Martinique and Guadeloupe, the government can do what they want with public officers, they shutting down the country! Dominicans are afraid of their shadow, and worse, now that so many are so dependent- red clinic, roving care givers , petro caribe gas to elders etc… few people now will stand up because they afraid that they’ll loose these little handouts. I remember a friend of mine during the election time saying that ‘ they are gonna vote for their government because they can’t bite the hand that’s feeding them’. And I said to them, you mean you are not the one who wakes up everyday and go to do a fare days work for a fare days pay! People if that is the attitude that we have in Dominica we are doomed. You cannot tell me that because you have a job you feel that you don’t have a right to voice any criticisms of your representatives; that you are so grateful to have a job, that you allow people to walk over you. Nonsense, people it’s time for us to open our eyes and put country first.

Its time that the government does the right thing, Look at the prices for gas, and the cost of living in Dominica and on top of that we have the vat, granted the government cant do anything about the gas prices, but what about Petro caribe, I have not seen any difference. DPSU has my full backing and Thomas Letang is a real blessing for the workers in Dominica. I am looking forward to hearing the outcome
