DPSU gets tough on PWC

payment dueThe Union representing staff of the Public Works Corporation (PWC) has given the management there until 1 pm on Friday to pay its staff.

Thomas Letang, general secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), said on Wednesday that staff members at the corporation have not been paid for two fortnights and are threatening some form of action.

However, he did not disclose exactly what type of action will be taken.

According to Letang, late payment of salaries is nothing new at PWC but he pointed out that the Corporation has been undertaking projects, therefore there should be no excuse for not paying staff.

“The employees have mortgages; there is a penalty that is attached to late payments. There are also inconveniences when salaries are not paid on time. Today is already the 6th of the month,” he said.

Letang said the union has dispatched a letter to the management of the PWC indicating its dissatisfaction.

“We told them in the letter that we want all salaries paid by 1 pm and if that is not done, on Monday we will decide what is the next step,” he explained.

Letang said these late payments are not fair to employees.

“This is something that needs to be addressed. We exercised enough patience. They sent a letter saying that salaries will be late, with no indication as to when they will be paid. It is just not fair to the employees,” Letang stressed.

Based on Letang’s reputation he may just settle for nothing while the labor party supporters at PUblic Works just keep quiet , eat the next level meal and wait next election for their supply of cheap water mugs, cheap red t shirts and a red baseball cap. As an alternate please go to the red clinic and if the red clinic cyan help drive down to St Joseph to see the specialist medicine dispenser jst don’t enter via the easy door and your name might just be included on the slush medicine list.

:-D :-D :-D :-D ! Letang when will you recognize that no one takes you seriously? Your words have become useless chatter and your action as plain old grandstanding. These so called deadlines will come and go just to allow you to make another one thus making a bigger fool of yourself and DPSU.

I agree it not fair to the employees. You think DOMLEC going to hear they haven’t been paid in 2 fortnights? Plus they have kids to feed and send to school.

Come on PWC you guys can do better. Even if its a portion of the wages but you can’t just leave people without money after they work for you.

If you can’t afford to pay them then lay them off so they can find something else to do.

They need to make some people redundant if they can’t afford to pay them.

Every time I hear about Union, it is in connection with salary. Does the Union have any other function? I need to hear the call for greater efficiency, less loitering, less stealing and squandering of employer’s supplies. What is the union doing to address these issues?

      make an employers union

Such an orgainisation is already in existence. The DEF (Dominica Employers Federation), headed by Achiile Joseph, and affilitated to the OIE ( International Organisation of Employers) in Switzerland. As the name implies it does not represent the interests of workers such as the personnel of PWC but on the contrary, the interests of those who employ them. We should not forget that PWC is not part of any Govt. ministery but incorporated as a company under the laws of Dominica with the Govt. owning all of the shares (similar to Dowasco).
