DPSU says industrial action still on the table

Letang makes a point during Tuesday’s press conference

General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, has said that members of his organization have not ruled out industrial action as the row between the union and government continues over salary increases.

At a press conference on Tuesday, he also sought to dispel all allegations that the union has accepted the government’s 1 percent salary increase offered to public officers.

“We are not at this moment ruling out industrial action … the only reason why we have not embarked on industrial action is because we have thought of these poor people who are getting their barrels and boxes from overseas and we have taken these people’s plight into consideration,” Letang said.

According to Letang the DPSU is prepared for what he described as a ‘long battle.’ “We recognise that this is going to be a long battle for us and as an executive we are prepared for that long battle,” he pointed out.

Letang stated that industrial action is the union’s last resort if their demands are not met and will be their way of demonstrating their dissatisfaction.

The general secretary also dismissed claims that the union has accepted the government’s 1 percent offer for the second year.

“The union is not prepared to accept 1 percent for year two or year and three. We have been studying the state of the economy and we are very much aware that there has been conflicting information which we have been receiving. On one hand we hear that the economy is doing very well but when we get to the negotiating table we are presented with a different picture,” he declared.

He continued, “In our letter dated November 13th, 2012 we made it absolutely clear to the government the DPSU wishes to reiterate its refusal of government’s latest offer of 1 percent and 1 percent for the year 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.”

Letang described the 1 percent salary increase offer as “unfair since it will be taken by social security and not be seen by public officers.”

Members of the DPSU will meet with the government on Friday and according to Letang, although the government invited them to the meeting to confirm the increase of 1 percent, the DPSU will be continuing negotiations until its demands are met.

Shhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!. Action speaks louder than words. Unions demonstrate strength and solidarity of membership by taking tough unapologetic positions and decisions when all good faith negotiations have failed. Beyond that point, the speeches and press conferences are of no use. Learn how to do that from the master Charlo himself.

   :?: Garcon you are talking too much,if you are not prepared to take the neccessary actions, the members should ask for your resignation immediately! The government is not taking you all seriously and is playing games with you.The government has been saying publicly that the economy is doing so well to the point of increasing their pay and employing more of their own like Parry Bellot who criticised the public servants.Don’t you see how many ministers they’ve got?The largest government in the history of Dominica. This government has done so much ills and wrong to the public servants by cuuting their salary with a levy when they came into power only to increase their cabinet and the union did nothing to stop them. From that time the government should be taken down and we would not be in this mess.So Mr. unon leader, mobilise you members and close the country so we could remove this government. You will be grating Dominica a good service by doing this and your name will go down in history as recueing and saving the country.   :?:
