€95,000 for sustainable development projects in Dominica

Project Officer of the Caribbean arm of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, Sandra Singh

The Dominica Association of Local Community Authorities (DALCA) has successfully proposed a national development framework to the tune of 95,000 Euro alongside the government’s collaborative efforts with the United Nations in creating a framework to monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) in Dominica.

The project/framework was publicized during the Association’s first National Consultation on “Localizing the SDG’s for Effective Functioning of Local Authorities” at the Windsor Park Stadium on Wednesday, August 16th 2017.

Technical and Administration Officer at DALCA, Vincienne George, said that with the government’s transition from Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s), and the UN providing assistance to the government of Dominica with the development of their framework, DALCA’s adopted project will kick off in four village councils across the island.

“It is against this backdrop that DALCA was successful in proposing a project aligning to the national development framework for the country. This project, as we are aware, was funded to the tune of ninety-five thousand Euro to be used among four councils in the communities of Portsmouth, Grandbay, Roseau, and Canefield,” she said.

Meanwhile, Project Officer of the Caribbean arm of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, Sandra Singh says that having a number of SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals) implemented will promote a sense of equality among the population.

This “agenda” according to Singh, effects a number of positives including the advocating human rights, equitable public services, and protection of the environment.

“This agenda which should leave no one behind; this agenda which advocates a human rights approach; an agenda which focuses on the quality of our lives; an agenda that must work for the poor and the marginalized; ensuring the inclusion of women and of course the disabled; an agenda that requires us to provide public services equitably and without discrimination; an agenda that reminds us of our responsibility to protect the environment for future generations,” she remarked.

The Sustainable Development Goals otherwise known as the ‘Global Goals’ is an group of objectives set forth by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and they are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

There are 17 Goals which build on the successes of the MDG’s, while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities.

The entire government/civil service structure has been compromised and therefore seriously affects and erodes their intervention with local authorities, communities etc. The only visible ink we see between government and villages, and councils, is through the discriminatory intervention, by-passing civil servants’ and professionals is from the Prime Minister’s office….through divine intervention and well known Red Clinic where poor people que on the Red Clinic day to receive cash handouts personally from the Prime minister abusing states fuds. This is the role of the Welfare Division who have been by-passed and lack the necessary resources to undertake their jobs professionally.
Dominica needs a clean up of its social & welfare services hijacked…

Miss Sandra Singh, the above is not going to bring the results above.
    1. Many Dominicans are left behind due to dirty politics and discrimination if not towing this corrupt labour government line.
    2. You need first to do human rights lecture to this government, from Prime Minister down to his surrogates.
3.This agenda will not raise, nor increase the quality of lives of Dominicans, and it is NOT an agenda that will work in the interest of the poor.
    4. The poor have been reduced and subjected to poverty, receiving handouts from a Red Clinic designed and distributed from the Prime Ministers office. That is an abuse, it is fraudulent, it is discriminatory.
    5. The results you look for will not happen, because the government institutions and professionals have been…

When are these agencies going to wake up and realise that this programme above is NOT going to happen in Dominica. It is like parents with a young child are drug addicts and we continue to pump sustainable food and products to them where it is not feasible that they will be good parents to take care of this vulnerable child`s growth, health and social development.
The child in the interim should be removed from the parents and given to safe hands to nurture. Dominica needs safe hands, credible leadership.
Dominica currently does not have the leadership quality to undertake any new initiatives, albeit towards Dominica`s interest. It is going to be a waste of money and resources. Look where we are after all this CBI money, it is just throwing money here there and everywhere. This is despicable.
    We need sincere…

Too many chefs and not enough cooks in Dominica. Every day there is a conference, a forum, a meeting, a fete for this and that group, the list is endless. More talking than work in Dominica. Looks to me that many people are busy moving about the place, looking important and looking for a free lunch and nothing materialize. Let’s get back and do some real work instead of posturing.
