ECCB issues $8 commemorative coin

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has issued a special eight-dollar commemorative coin in recognition of the establishment of the OECS Economic Union.
The eight-dollar value of the coin represents the eight member countries of the Economic Union. The coin features the flag of each country on the reverse side and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second on the obverse side.
Unlike the $2 circulation coin which the ECCB issued in October 2011, the eight-dollar commemorative coin cannot be used to conduct financial transactions. Rather, it is a collectors’ item which represents a milestone in the history of the OECS.
The OECS Heads of Government signed the Treaty establishing the OECS Economic Union on 18 June 2010. The Economic Union creates the platform for deepening the level of integration among the countries and provides a wider scope for the overall development of the region and its citizens.
The coin is made of sterling silver and is available for sale at EC$420. It can be ordered directly from the ECCB or from its Agency Office at 3rd Floor Financial Center. The coin is not available at the commercial banks.

I would have seriously considered purchasing one if it was in the region of $100 or so. Seeing that it can not be used for trade then the $8 marked on it is as symbolic as $80 i would say. I would feel better paying more for a coin marked $80.00 than $8.00. I love collecting these rare coins but I am sorry that I will have to let this one slide. Did they mention how many were produced? That might be a factor which might make someone like me go get one.
i am wondering if there was a typo… perhaps its not $420.00 bucks but $42.00 Dollars MAKING the value of the coin only 6times rather than 60times ITS true value… just wondering..
on another note the OECS is doing much better when it comes to regional integration though they still slow at it but CARICOM is a big FARCE i have no hope in them whatsoever … i wont be dreaming if it happens it happens ..

At the end of the day we all have a choice to buy it or not, I think I rather make a grocery shopping with my $420……
I want a 1 caribbean dollar, not oces, or caricom or sects,and clicks. The caribbean need to unite as 1 and we need to have 1 dollar with our heads at the front.

The dollar would be too small to accommodate all our heads. Its millions.Or maybe it would be too large to carry around.
Anyway i honestly don’t think that is going to happen because we glibly talk about Caribbean unity, but we are eagerly and vehemently defending our own islands as much as we possibly can,and in some instances we don’t even want other caribbean islanders to enter and work.

Yea. LoL @ you and me. Before I saw the price I was hoping that it would cost $8 EC to , because I was planing on buying a few. lol.
We see our Caribbean people are still trapped in the post slavery era, even among our economists and financial experts. Why should we continue to print Queen Elizabeth’s face on our coins? We still hold that concept it’s white it’s better.
There are so many great Caribbean economist like Sir Arthur Lewis and others, why not print their heads instead? I am disappointed and I will for sure not patronize this business.
we remain part of the Commonwealth and the Queen is the head of the Commonwealth what do you expect.
The queen is also featured on the Canadian and Austrialian money
If you hold on to it, it controls you, If you accept it is what it is you move on
The Queen of the UK is still the Head of State of the OECS countries except Dominica.
The Governors of these countries represent the Queen but Dominica is a Republic and has a President. The monarchy states are in the majority,so their Queen’s face is on the currency which we share.
This coin has no commercial value, it is just a collectors item, so why the ugly face of the queen? could we not showcase the face of a prominent OECS national?
and that my friend is why so many years after independence we are still impoverished. which is the case just about everywhere that wont cut ties with their former colonizers. when are were going to realize we have to cut ties to truly be independent and move forward
Because the Queen is the Head of State of all these Islands except Dominica. They’re actually doing Dominica a favour, if you don’t like then use the SUCRE.
