Hike in fuel prices looms

Dominicans will have to dig deeper into their pockets as there is going to be another increase in fuel prices on the island, new information from the Ministry of Trade has revealed.

This comes almost one month after the last price hike. Gasoline now costs $15.44, diesel $14.54 and kerosene $13.44 per gallon.

The Ministry of Trade had said recently it was monitoring fuel prices on the world market as they influenced local costs. Unrest in the Middle East oil producing regions has been blamed for the price hikes.

Meantime the cost for a 20-pound cylinder of cooking gas remains fixed at $38.47.

All you maybe think Dominica is in its own world!!!.we do not produce oil so we cannot have a say on prices, ya’ll should listen to more news and stop sitting on the block gossiping and complaining. time ppl start trying to make a living for themselves rather than expecting a minister to give them house, clothes n money! In Dominica we have good time eno other places ppl losing jobs every day…you doe hearing about 200 ppl lose job today so be happy n try to make the best out of it! Jah!

The price of fuel is still better in DA than many other countries……..stop complaining and blaming the Government….. give God the praise…..

For example: the price of a 20 pound cylinder of cooking gas in SXM is US$26.00 and climbing
US$26.00 is about EC$69.42 for the same cylinder of gas…….and you all are paying EC$38.47

    • Soldier
      May 10, 2011

Ever heard of Purchasing Power Parity? An hour of regular labour in SXM is US$7.50 and the same job in Dominica will win you EC$4.50 .. so go figure! All relative sir!

@DAangel Why would you want to keep being mentally enslaved by telling Dominicans not to complain or blame Govt.? Any price increase hurts people’s pockets especially when Govt. lies to the nation about reduced prices because of Petro Caribe selling oil from Venezuela and in particular when unemployment is on the increase. Take a Glory Cedar bath instead and stop bathing in ignorance.

Petro Caribe with its fuel tanks built on the BELFAST RIVER BANK, sells fuel from Venezuela and for Venezuela. The DLP Govt. boasted that as a result of the operations of Petro Caribe, fuel (GAS, DIESEL) prices at the pump, as well as Electricity bills would be much lower. You all forget those statements already? Dominicans what are you now witnessing? It is in OUR FACES, Higher Electricity bills, increase in gas and diesel prices. The bigger the LIE and the more often it is told, the more people will readily accept and fall for it, according to Goebbels of the German NAZI Party of Adolph Hitler.

In addition the Minister responsible for Petro Caribe told villagers of Mahaut and Jimmit, Dominicans at large, that Petro Caribe would set up a playing field for the children of the area after cleaning by the seaside at Jimmit where the rubbish dump was located. Yes, a playing field 20 yards from the sea. Can you all imagine that? But many people believed. You all forget those things already? Where is that playing Field? Those Lies were deliberately concocted to get people to accept Petro Caribe establishment and operations. A few in ‘High places’ are making plenty $$$$$$$$$ from Petro Caribe operations. In the meantime, Dominicans are and will be burdened with a massive debt to Venezuela for years and years to come. Who sets the price for a barrel of oil on the world market, Venezuela, Dominica or OPEC? Time is the Reveler. NO LIE COULD LAST FOREVER. Politicians, Govt, and their ilk could fool some of the people sometimes, but could never fool all of the people all of the time.

Petro Caribe was never about paying less for petroleum products. It was always about paying later. In other words we get the product and pay part now and the rest is a loan. Perhaps this was not properly explained.

There are cities in Alaska, which produces oil, where the gas price is USD10 per gallon. With the exception of TNT, we do not produce oil; we are at the mercy of market forces. So the sooner we stop whining about it and put in place measures to reduce our consumption, the better off we’ll be.

    • Soldier
      May 10, 2011

Please please please .. tell us the average price of unleaded in Alaska!?! or the highest .. which ever. No BS .. get that info for me. Because I have always known Alaska and Georgia to have the lowest taxes on fuel. Got the price yet!?!?! here’s help http://www.alaskagasprices.com/index.aspx?fuel=A

Secondly, the people were promised lower prices!
They never asked for it as a condition for Petro Caribe to come to Dominica.
They were promised lower electrical bills and cheaper prices at the pump as a result of Petro Caribe operating in Dominica. So do not talk about whining! You are very disrespectful to Dominicans madam! We live here and not in Alaska! We didn’t get cheap land either!

Oh, TnT subsidizes fuel costs for its people.

    • Tourist
      May 11, 2011

That is true. However, how much per gallon is taxes. Quite a lot. And of course the higher the price climbs the higher the taxes rise. The government should not charge VAT on fuel.

Well Piper, here is what I see the problem here is:

Every body in the world know that OPEC and what happens in oil producing countries control the price of oil. Everybody, except Dominicans. A certain minister told Dominicans that Papa Chavez will control the price of oil to Dominicans, keeping it low. Guess what? Dominicans believe that and voted for the minister…

So now, prices going up and the minister is either quiet or giving a different story. Domlec reporting almost $300K loss, and guess why? Diesel prices of course..so you can bet your light bill going up soon…ask the minister about that….Gasoline gone up…diesel gone up..so you know darn well that the price of everything else is going to go up…

The thing is, we should expect prices to rise, but to tell people that you have control of prices, especially the price of gas, when you really don’t, is a real big problem. That is dishonest. The bigger problem is that some of us are so gullible that we believe anything….that’s what really sucks.

    • Piper
      May 10, 2011

The problem is, Dominican are always looking for someone to take care of them, so the minister must get away with lying to them. Oh well…shite happens

So the price of gas is high everywhere and somehow it should not apply to Dominica? Some of you people behave as if Dominica is on a different planet. Why would Chavez give his gas to Dominica at a fraction of the price when he can sell it at market value somewhere else?

Believe everything politicians say and you will see where that gets you.

The DLP Govt. boasted that with PETRO CARIBE coming to Dominica, setting up operations at Jimmit where several FUEL STORAGE TANKS have been built, Electricity, gas and diesel prices would be greatly REDUCED. They told Dominicans that since Petro Caribe would be selling diesel to DOMLEC at a much reduced price, our ELECTRICITY BILLS would NEVER INCREASE. What is the REALITY at PRESENT? Convince us PATRIOTS that the whole thing wasn’t a GIMMICK.

The DLP Govt. fooled the people again when they told us that even though the cost of a barrel of oil on the world market goes up because of Petro Caribe in Jimmit selling fuel from and for Venezuela the cost of gasolene and diesel would remain cheaper and stable. They KNEW, THEY KNEW, THEY KNEW that it is OPEC which sets the prices of a barrel of oil on the market. If they did not know that, it is more PROOF that Skerrit and his DLP ilk is incompetent and unfit to be in Govt. Dominicans were TAKEN FOR a RIDE AGAIN. Many Dominicans jumped up, they were ecstatic, praising the DLP Govt. blindly, not realizing that it was a BIG HOAX. The Dominican People were being FOOLED AGAIN.

How many Dominicans know or have been informed about the HUGE DEBT Dominica owes to Venezuela for fuel as a result of Petro Caribe? So many people have requested time and time again for such information, but to no avail. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The opposition, other Dominican PATRIOTS, have been begging Govt. for that info. Probably DNO could assist us in finding out what that HUGE DEBT is.

Our children, our children’s children, our children children’s children will be forever INDEBTED to Petro Caribe and Venezuela. In fact, up to this present day, fooling the people has become NORMAL. Incompetent politicians FOOLING the people AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN has become an ACCEPTED NORM in Dominica. The calypsonian, Mighty Sparrow, sang years ago, “WE LIKE IT SO.” TIME WILL TELL. Where FOOLING an entire nation is a deliberate practice, my people, it is FOLLY to be wise and to OPEN your EYES.

Are you sure you did not clone my thoughts? Man these infiltrates of the authentic labour party have ruined everything for DA.I am now convinced I may not see DA liberated in My Life Time and am in the 3rd decade of life.It only dawned on me when you said our children and children children Even if i become a gran in the next 2 decades or more i may not see that change which has illuded us fom long before my time. Mt dad was in the black power movement. He spokes to me and my sibblings about the 60’s and 70’s when he was a young man.And all he is certain about is’ the more things change the more they go backward in DA” he gives a twist on the old adage.
His daily words more of the same shit just different days. He’s very ammused by guys like Ron who he knows well but extremely dissappointed in him, Jolly A joey P Dr.Willy etc. he still belives Parra is the only one with a bone of steadfastness. The breast minister seems his favourite buffoon he often wonders how can the population of Bonne vote the breast minister over parra.
But he calms him self by stating it is what it is this is where the people are at this time intheir retarded development.

      Indebted,

You didn’t touch on the debt owed to China. I guess that is not to be talked about in this decade. The interest due is probably still low. Let’s wait a few more years and see. In the mean time, I guess it would be unpatriotic to ask for information on the tally, the interest rate and other terms.

But the price of oil has just gone back down to under $100 a barrel…..so should we expect a reduction soon.

I think vendors abuse the inflation by adjusting prices up only and never adjusting down as they assume to sales continue the the populace can afford it, but that’s not the case: a vehicle is not a luxury, it is a necessity for many, a means of earning a living and generally we would put out and sacrifice to have a motorable vehicle.

the same applies goods and products… Voleh….

intreasting, what about the perto caribe and as we were told the reason for having them in Dom was to obtain a decrease in the cost of fuel for the generation of fuel. so our light bill continue to increase as the opec cost per barrel of oil increases. the government continues to to a free ride on the natives of walt disney land. collects $3.00 per gallon of gasonine in sexcise tax, and $2.80 on diesel. notwithstanding the world price of a barrel of oil on the world market, the excise tax is pick up placing millions of dollars in the coffers of the state.and then what, the minsitry of trade continues to monitor world prices whlie we pay $ 15.44 per gallon of gasoline.

We were told about the exploration of geothermal energy and that either government is supposed to start the expedition or still signing contracts?

Secondly, I wonder, if we really tap into our geothermal energy here, will the cost of living or service decrease? I’m sure there will be the Corporate’s greed.

      • Observer
        May 10, 2011

Corporate greed is what controls price indeed. With increase technology finding oil and extracting it from the earth has gotten more effiicient, but what happens prices go up.
And don’t be fooled, geothermal energy is very unlikely to curb the price of electricity. In fact corporate might want to hike to price to regain their capital investment as soon as possible so that they can start getting profits. Dominica is one of the countries in the caribbean (even the world – check the stats for yourself) with the highest percentage of renewable energy as its source of electricity, but we pay among the highest rates in the caribbean. Now OPEC is squeezing all what they can get out of the oil – no mercy. That price is out of the hands of Chavez, out of the hands of Skerrit, out of the hands of Obama. The only thing we can do is reduce our dependance of oil – a big challenge.

        • ?????
          May 10, 2011

:-D :-D :-D Good comments from Muslim_always ,miss min ling and Observer . Very good point and this is the kind and level of comments expected from our readers. Not some of the craps that some persons write. If we write and cannot edify and teach others then say nothing. If we cannot be respectful and comment decently, then we should not say anything. Just my few pence.

Yes reduce our dependency on oil which is a big challenge indeed. But let our ‘thinking caps start twitching” Who knows we might be one never knows and on the question of ‘ corporate greed’ I want to personally call on those who only see ‘profits and me, myself and I alone’ that we owe our Father the duty to contribute to our society meaningfully and not try to grab and grab and get rich at the expense of others. Remember that the Creator is looking down on us and we cannot hide anything from him and we will be brought naked if we do not do what is correct. Note that I said ‘We”.

Another thing we need to get out of the mentallity of making money by having rates and prices exhorbitant. The cheaper the price , the better the turnover, the better the profit in the long term. The short term fast profit only attracts a small fraction and the turnover is slower, the goods deteiorate and then we throw away, or forced to lower the price when we could have sold articles earlier on and have a newer stock. Let us make good business sense!

PLEASE WHOEVER IS READING THIS PLZ PASS THE WORD AROUND…………

THE GOVT proposed “x” income from the VAT from consumers…they have since been reaping X + 1/3 to 1/2 of X…the fuel is still VATED ,TAXED ,enviromentally taxed and so on..

In simple terms the fuel taxes are the real costs of high fuel costs here.If the Govt was really interested in curbing the escalation of fuel costs they could simply reduce or remove the taxes on the fuel for a certain period until the world fuel markets stabilizes once more.THE GOVT ARE THE ONES REALLY PULLING IN THE PROFITS FROM FUEL.

About 10 years ago the fuel fuel station owners were getting around 30 cents per gallon as profit, currently I have no clue what it is but with the addition of VAT,ENVIRONMENTAL TAXES AND SO ON they most likely don’t make that anymore.

PLEASE SOMEONE POST A BREAKDOWN OF THE COST OF FUEL PER GALLON AND THE ADDITIONAL TAXES PER GALLON SO WE COULD KNOW WHAT IT REALLY IS THIS DAY..
