Julius Corbette to manage AID Bank

Julius Corbette
Julius Corbette

Come 9:30am on May 7, 2013, Julius Corbette will have signed his contract and become the new general manager of the AID Bank of Dominica.

The bank has been without a general manger now for some time now.

Corbette returns to the banking industry in Dominica after a lengthy court battle with the government of Dominica which ended at the Privy Council in London after he was fired from his post as general manger of the National Bank of Dominica (NDB) in 2000.

He was dismissed by the NDB board after approximately three years on the job.

Corbette argued that his dismissal was “politically motivated” and had nothing to do with his performance as General Manager.

He won his case at the High Court after Judge Lewis Hunt ruled that he “was wrongfully dismissed.”

However, that decision was over turned by the Court of Appeal and in 2009, the Privy Council cited many errors in the matter and dismissed the appeal but sent the matter back to the high court for retrial.

Speaking to DNO, a source close to the bank confirmed that, “It’s a done deal, he has already been meeting with staff and come Tuesday (May 7) he will enter on his first official working day at the bank.”

When contacted by DNO, Corbette down played the matter. “I am here because my mom is sick and in the hospital,” he said.

However, when pressed further he stated, “I have no authority to speak on the subject matter right now, when the time comes for me to speak I will do so”.

DNO also contacted chairman of the AID Bank, Martin Charles, who said he was not prepared to say much on the matter. “The bank will issue a release on the matter,” was all he said.

Can you not comprehend that this as a joke and to steer others out of his personal business. This has no bearing on anyone. He cannot discuss it due to the terms of the settlement and his contract. Why can you not comprehend that?

I am so very happy that you have finally gotten off this politics nonsense and take up this great offer from the DLP.
I know that the people in the UWP will call you all sorts of names on their show but we cannot, as a family be bothered.
We are fully aware of your talents skills and experience and we wish you well. That decision should have been made a long time ago. Uncle give your praise to God and in him everthing is possible.

WAW thats such great news! ….. take this in your cup and drink from it. The true people of Possie are extremely happy that our tradition of building our beloved Dominica continues. I know Mr.Corbette since I was born and he is a good man. I am very happy that good sense has entered his bright mind and he is on board with the DLP again. He is an outstanding humble man and is definitely not arrogant and does not have an attitude like “u kno who “. Dominica and Portsmouth will be better off by this timely appointment and we are all proud of you. I was shocked when I was told that a certain ‘former northern parrot” had all kinds of things to say in that bar in Portsmouth over the weekend past. I know the Corbette family and they are respectable and talented. It appears that some people believe that they have the biggest heads in Da but big head and big brains are two different things lol! It is not funny that Some knowledgeable people can be so stupid at times it is not funny.
Let us join hands with Corbi and build our country. Who looking for seat to contest for NEW PARTY in the making well that’s their problem, not even UWPwee want them because leadership they want and big money to contest elections. I love mister Corbette and he will transform the bank with his brains and experience and we as a nation are excited by that great choice. Whether that lawyer is upset about this or not is not our business. Everything is controversy.
LONG LIVE CORBETTE—you are always one of us!

Tour comments does not help. Politics will always be there. We are all part of politics, that’s why we vote. It was politics that fired him from NCB.

I will always continute to believe that “The stone that the builder refuesed shall be the head cornerstone”!! Let this be an encouragement to the oppressed and those who think they are being overlooked for whatever reason or the other..He that exalts himself shall be humbled and he that is humble shall be exalted..In God’s time!!!

They arrived at an amicable decision. Since he was reinstated obviously he was compensated for loss of salary (I wonder with accrued interest :?: ) or just a settlement including his lawyers fees and present salary.
Generally when a settlement is reached with monetary compensation, for confidential reasons the plaintiff is advised not to speak to the Media or divulge it to others. They also cannot sue. The plaintiff must sign a relevant document. This means the case is closed. Failure to adhere to the conditions could result in a penalty.
Therefore, those curiosity seekers  who want to be appeased, comprehend his situation and also DNO’s situation. In time, if he wishes to speak about it he will do so. I believe that he was cautioned not to do so.
Whatever, Julius Corbette, overall they were trying times and must have been difficult for you during those years. However, you fought the good fight of seeking fairness. You won. I wish you well and continued happiness, peacefulness and success in employment. You will serve your employer with grace and dignity including those whom you supervise. Life is a growing and learning process. C’est la vie. :) You have come out stronger and wiser from this experience. Good luck and God bless!

    • Justice and Truth
      May 6, 2013

Why would you make such a statement? DNO can only publish the information provided. There are times that certain information is withheld from the Media and the public for good and privacy reasons. The public does not have to know every aspect of the proceedings and confidential matters. It is left to readers to assume whatever they wish. What is important is Corbette fought his case with no doubt much anxiety and stress and is reinstated. I do think this is sufficient information. Let us be happy for him.

    • Patzory
      May 6, 2013

When last you hear that Tiani doing anything since he was exposed further by the court of appeal in those Magistrial appeals? I think we should be hearing more about him after he came out of law school in Trinidad getting some important and much needed classes/lessons. In any case it is pointless to even speak about mister. Congrats to Corbette on your appointment and we wish you all the best. Be wise and stay away from thr blues politics. They already saying you with the Labour party hence returning to your boots. You will hear them on those talk shows and the Marigot man is already BUWAY about that. Some people so thin skin and they calling Possie people crooks.

      • DLP Politics or Law?
        May 7, 2013

Well I am a Police Officer, I sat in Court on Monday last week when Baptiste apologises for her error and actions directly to Behanzin, who she conceded to, when he spoke of the 9 murders from those they conspired to release by refusing to include their previous convictions. Behanzin is still in a better place, while Portsmouth burned with shootings, robberies and rapes. Keep trying to destroy the mans name, you truly have no shame everyone saw what happened, yet you DLP people continue to play politics!! Two unqualified Magistrates was the government’s answer, one an unemployed politician from Grenada with no qualifications, the other an old law degree, poor police record and he never passed in any law school in the Commonwealth, let alone anywhere in the world!!! This is all an embarrassment to the justice system in Dominica! Continue to serve your politics!!

Like what, does drug lords he went to Montserrat to bail? steupes…According to my lawyer friend, when you are in public practice (magistrate) its about the laws, when you are in private practice, it’s about the money

      • be true!
        May 9, 2013

You guys are not being honest with Behanzin’s achievements. The man has had some seven ground breaking cases in the eastern Caribbean, he is not easy on his feet if you have to oppose him. In his first application and then trial at the High Court, despite the judge giving him an unfair hard time, he soundly defeated a relatively experienced lawyer, (who use to attack him while he sat on the bench) Alick Lawrence’s chambers He gave lennox Lawrence, a chief government lawyer, a sound beating at his first appearance at the Court of Appeal, I saw him handle Blomqvist. he made constitutional breakthrough in his cases outside of our jurisdiction, He continued to devote his time to conduct free legal clinics and he returned with his Radio show, law on ‘Q’, so why continue to try to disrespect this public servant!! non of us lawyers are doing what he does. I listen to his show and it actually helps me in my practice,

“Once bitten, twice shy”, the saying goes.

One may look at this new appointment as making amends for his ‘wrongful dismissal from the NBD’. However, let’s hope Corbett’s qualifications is the real reason.

Should we be surprised that his patriotism and love for his country are the determining factors which led him to place his past dismissal behind him?

Congratulations LORD Julius. The Countess should be proud…

Just now Skerrit will give you a red cap and a T-Shirt written “Thank God for Skerrit”. Take care you get sick though.
