LIAT employees to get salaries

Regional airline LIAT is reporting that some of its staff have already received their June salaries.

LIAT management has also gone on record to indicate that “all employees will receive their salaries by Tuesday July 3”.

Spokesman Desmond Brown confirmed on Thursday that the company had commenced the processing of salaries for all employee groups.

”He advised that salaries for monthly paid employees are due at the end of the month,” a LIAT release states.

LIAT management said it had taken note of reports in the regional media “regarding the delayed payment of salaries for the month of June 2012”.

The Antigua Observer reported on Wednesday that almost two weeks into a major fire that cost LIAT (1974) an estimated $35 million in insured losses, the company announced it was facing another challenge: it is unable to meet its payroll due at the end of June.

The Observer Media group said it had obtained a copy of a memo relating to late payment of salaries that was sent out to staff.

It said the memo, signed by the company’s Director of Human Resources (HR), stated, “As you are aware, LIAT has been experiencing severe cash-flow constraints for some time. The situation has been worsened by the recent fire, which has caused the company to incur significant unplanned expenses in order to continue normal operations.”

The memo’s said to have indicated that payment would be delayed for a few days.

The saddest thing is that as a LIAT employee, your rent/ mortgage and loan payments will be late and you are responsible for the accumulated interest. This is the company the PM made an investment of 8M to. LIAT is just a pathetic case and I truly hope and wish that there were more airlines to compete with this waste of time company called LIAT.

A billionaire asked his son what he wanted for his birthday. The boy says “A cowboy outfit” the billionaire buys him LIAT. I wonder how long the bobol at LIAT will continue. They actually have a contract supplying parts at astronomical prices so you cannot go out and buy at the best value, you must go through the bobol. I guess we like it so.

DNO please tell the Olympic cand Pottersville committees that there is no time such as 12 pm. it is either 12 noon or 12 midnight.

DNO, anything in excess loses its value. I think we have had our full dose of Leave It Alone Toms (LIAT) in one week. LIAT has our sympathy during this period of severe cash-flow constraints. We are happy to hear that all employees will receive their salaries.

After all, these are the people who have been working hard to keep the company afloat and to enhance its operational and financial efficiency. Let’s hope that LIAT does not award fat annual Christmas bonuses to its high level executives and the company can offer better services to the public.

While at it, governments throughout the region, especially the government of St Lucia must ease up on the heavy taxes and surcharges on tickets in order to reduce the cost and increase intra-Caribbean travel so that LIAT’s cash flow can be improved.
